Anaesthetist Salary: Converting Hourly Rates to Annual Pay Under Australian Tax

Based on ABS data, the median anaesthetist earns $8,293 per week (46 hours), but for a standard 38-hour week the equivalent hourly rate is about $218, yielding an annual gross of approximately $431,000 before tax.

Understanding the Anaesthetist Salary: Hourly to Annual Conversion

If you're an anaesthetist or considering the profession, you've likely seen figures like the median weekly earnings of $8,293 reported by. But how does that translate to an annual salary? And what about tax, Medicare, and super? This guide walks you through the conversion, using the latest Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) and Fair Work Commission data.

The Basic Formula: Hourly × Hours × 52

The standard way to estimate annual gross pay is:

Annual gross = hourly rate × hours per week × 52 weeks

For most full-time employees, we assume 38 ordinary hours per week (the base for the National Minimum Wage). However, anaesthetists often work more. According to the ABS, the average full-time hours for anaesthetists are 46 hours per week. But for consistency with our timesheet calculator, we use 38 hours unless you specify otherwise.

Using the median hourly earnings of $218 (from the same ABS survey), the calculation for a 38-hour week is:

$218 × 38 × 52 = $430,768 per year

If you work 46 hours, it would be $218 × 46 × 52 = $521,456 per year. The pay guides can help you check award-specific hours.

What About the Fortnight?

Many employers pay fortnightly. Your fortnightly gross is simply weekly earnings × 2. For the median anaesthetist at 38 hours: $8,293 per week (the median weekly earnings) × 2 = $16,586 per fortnight. Note that the median weekly earnings of $8,293 already reflect actual hours worked (46 hours), so if you use the 38-hour calculation, your weekly figure would be lower.

Distinguishing Minimum Wage, Award Rates, and Casual Loading

It's important to know the difference between the National Minimum Wage, award rates, and casual loading:

  • National Minimum Wage: From 1 July 2026, the Fair Work Commission sets it at $26.44 per hour ($1,004.90 per week for 38 hours). This is the floor for award/agreement-free employees.
  • Award rates: Anaesthetists are covered by the Health Professionals and Support Services Award 2020 (or similar). Award rates are higher than the minimum and include classifications for experience. Check the reference tables for current award pay.
  • Casual loading: Casual employees get a 25% loading on top of the base rate. For example, if your base hourly rate is $218, the casual rate would be $218 × 1.25 = $272.50. Never enter a rate that already includes loading into the calculator; use the base rate and tick the casual box. See casual loading for more.

Superannuation is paid on top of your salary at 12% of ordinary earnings, up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830. For a $430,000 salary, the maximum super is $32,500 (12% of $270,830). Super is not deducted from your pay; it's an additional contribution by your employer.

Tax and Medicare on the Anaesthetist Salary

Using the 2026–27 resident tax rates:

  • $0 – $18,200: Nil
  • $18,201 – $45,000: 15% on excess over $18,200
  • $45,001 – $135,000: 30% on excess over $45,000
  • $135,001 – $190,000: 37% on excess over $135,000
  • $190,001+: 45% on excess over $190,000

For a $430,768 annual gross, the tax calculation is:

  • First $18,200: $0
  • Next $26,800 (to $45,000): $4,020
  • Next $90,000 (to $135,000): $27,000
  • Next $55,000 (to $190,000): $20,350
  • Remaining $240,768: $108,346
  • Total tax: ~$159,716

Plus Medicare levy of 2% on taxable income (assuming no exemptions): $8,615. Total tax and Medicare: ~$168,331. Your take-home pay would be around $262,437 per year, or $5,047 per week. Use the take-home pay tool for a personalised estimate.

Why the Anaesthetist Salary Is a Useful Example

The anaesthetist salary highlights how high-income earners are affected by progressive tax rates and the super cap. It also shows the importance of using the correct hours. While the median weekly earnings of $8,293 (from ) are based on actual hours worked, our standard conversion uses 38 hours for consistency. Always check your own hours and award coverage.

Summary

  • Annual gross = hourly × hours per week × 52 (assume 38 hours unless you work more).
  • Fortnightly = weekly × 2.
  • National Minimum Wage is $26.44/hour; award rates for anaesthetists are much higher.
  • Casual loading is 25% on top of base rate; never include it in the base rate you enter.
  • Super is 12% on top, capped at $270,830 contribution base.
  • Tax uses the progressive 2026–27 scale plus 2% Medicare.

Questions people ask next

How is the anaesthetist salary calculated from hourly to annual?

Multiply the hourly rate by the number of hours worked per week, then by 52 weeks. For a standard full-time role, we assume 38 hours per week. For example, an hourly rate of $218 (the median for anaesthetists) gives $218 × 38 × 52 = $430,768 per year. If you work more hours, adjust accordingly. The [timesheet](/) calculator lets you enter your own hours.

What tax does an anaesthetist pay on their salary?

For 2026–27, resident tax rates are: nil up to $18,200; 15% from $18,201 to $45,000; 30% from $45,001 to $135,000; 37% from $135,001 to $190,000; and 45% above $190,000. Medicare levy is generally 2% of taxable income. For a $430,000 salary, tax would be around $150,000 plus Medicare. Use the [take-home pay](/topics/take-home) guide for a full breakdown.

Does superannuation apply on top of the anaesthetist salary?

Yes. The super guarantee is 12% of ordinary earnings, paid by the employer on top of your salary. For a $430,000 annual salary, super would be $51,600, but only up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830 (so the maximum super is $32,500). Super is not deducted from your pay; it's additional. See [super and packaging](/topics/super-and-packaging) for details.
