From Astronaut Salary to Award Rates: Converting Hourly Pay to Annual Income

Based on the National Minimum Wage of $26.44 per hour for a 38-hour week, annual gross pay is approximately $52,270.

Converting Hourly Pay to Annual Income

Whether you're comparing a job offer, budgeting for a mortgage, or just curious what an astronaut salary might look like in dollars per year, the conversion from hourly to annual pay is straightforward – but only if you know the right assumptions. In Australia, most full-time roles are based on a 38-hour week, and the Fair Work Ombudsman sets minimum rates that vary by award. This guide walks you through the formula, the key pay points, and what to watch out for.

The Formula: Hourly × Hours per Week × 52

To get your annual gross pay, multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work each week, then multiply by 52 weeks. For a standard full-time employee working 38 hours per week:

Annual gross = hourly rate × 38 × 52

For example, the National Minimum Wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour. That gives:

$26.44 × 38 × 52 = $52,269.44 per year.

If you're paid fortnightly, your gross fortnight is weekly pay × 2. Weekly pay for a full-time minimum wage worker is $26.44 × 38 = $1,004.72, so the fortnight is $2,009.44.

This formula assumes you work the same number of hours every week, with no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. If your hours vary, use your average weekly hours over the year.

National Minimum Wage vs Award Rates

The National Minimum Wage is the legal floor for employees not covered by an award or enterprise agreement. From 1 July 2026 it is $26.44 per hour for adults 21 and over. But most Australian workers are covered by an award – a legally binding set of minimum conditions for their industry or occupation. Award rates are almost always higher than the National Minimum Wage.

For example, the Health Services Award changed on 1 October 2026. You can check the latest rates using the Fair Work Ombudsman's pay guides. The Ombudsman also provides a Pay and Conditions Tool to calculate rates for your specific job.

Even if you're dreaming of an astronaut salary, the same conversion principles apply: find your hourly rate (or annual salary) and use the formula. The Australian Space Agency doesn't publish a specific award, but any employment would be covered by an applicable award or agreement.

Casual Loading and Superannuation

Casual employees get a 25% loading on top of the base hourly rate to compensate for not receiving paid leave (sick leave, annual leave). The National Minimum Wage for casuals is $33.05 per hour ($26.44 × 1.25). Our calculator has a checkbox to add this loading automatically – never type a rate that already includes casual loading.

Superannuation is paid on top of your gross earnings. From 1 July 2026, the super guarantee is 12% of ordinary time earnings, up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830 per year. For a full-time minimum wage worker, super adds $52,269.44 × 0.12 = $6,272.33 per year, bringing total employer cost to $58,541.77.

Tax and Take-Home Pay

Your annual gross pay is before tax. The Australian Taxation Office uses the 2026–27 resident tax rates:

  • Nil on the first $18,200
  • 15% on income from $18,201 to $45,000
  • 30% on income from $45,001 to $135,000
  • 37% on income from $135,001 to $190,000
  • 45% on income above $190,000

Plus the Medicare levy of 2% (generally). For a minimum wage earner on $52,269, the tax would be approximately:

  • $0 on first $18,200
  • 15% on $26,800 ($45,000 – $18,200) = $4,020
  • 30% on $7,269 ($52,269 – $45,000) = $2,180.70
  • Total tax = $6,200.70, plus Medicare $1,045.38 = $7,246.08
  • Take-home pay ≈ $45,023.36 per year, or $865.83 per week.

Using the Calculator

Our hourly conversion tool lets you enter your base hourly rate and optionally add casual loading. It calculates annual, monthly, fortnightly, and weekly gross pay, then estimates tax and super. Remember that the results are estimates – your actual pay depends on your award, hours, and personal circumstances.

For award-specific rates, always refer to the pay guides from the Fair Work Ombudsman. If you're covered by an enterprise agreement, the agreement rates override the award.

Final Thoughts

Whether you're earning the National Minimum Wage, a professional award rate, or even an astronaut salary, the conversion from hourly to annual is the same. The key is knowing your correct hourly rate, your weekly hours, and whether you're casual or permanent. Use the Fair Work Ombudsman's resources to check your entitlements, and our calculator to get a quick estimate of your annual income.

Questions people ask next

How do I convert an hourly rate to an annual salary?

Multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work each week, then multiply by 52 weeks. For a full-time employee working 38 hours per week, the formula is: hourly rate × 38 × 52. For example, the National Minimum Wage of $26.44 per hour gives an annual gross of $26.44 × 38 × 52 = $52,269.44. If you work part-time, use your actual weekly hours. Remember that this assumes the same rate every week with no unpaid overtime or penalty rates.

What is the difference between the National Minimum Wage and award rates?

The National Minimum Wage is the legal minimum for employees not covered by an award or registered agreement. From 1 July 2026 it is $26.44 per hour ($33.05 casual). Award rates are higher minimums set by the Fair Work Commission for specific industries and occupations. For example, the Health Services Award changed on 1 October 2026. You can find the correct rate for your job using the Fair Work Ombudsman's pay guides.

Does the calculator include casual loading and superannuation?

Yes. If you select the casual loading checkbox, the calculator adds 25% to your base hourly rate before converting to annual pay. Superannuation is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings, paid on top of your gross pay, up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830. The calculator does not include salary sacrifice, HELP repayments, or the Medicare levy surcharge. Always check your award or agreement for the exact entitlements.
