Hourly to Annual Pay Calculator: Australia Average Salary & Conversion Guide
For a standard 38-hour week, your annual gross pay is your hourly rate multiplied by 1,976 hours (38 × 52).
How to convert hourly to annual pay
To convert an hourly rate to an annual salary, multiply the hourly rate by the number of hours worked per week and then by 52 weeks. This calculator assumes a standard 38-hour week, as defined by the Fair Work Ombudsman for full-time employment. For example, if you earn $30 per hour, your annual gross pay is $30 × 38 × 52 = $59,280. You can adjust the hours if you work a different pattern, but the default is 38 hours.
The role of the National Minimum Wage and award rates
The Fair Work Commission sets the National Minimum Wage, which from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour for a 38-hour week. That works out to $1,004.90 per week or $52,254.80 per year before tax. Many employees are covered by an award or enterprise agreement that sets a higher minimum rate. Award rates vary by industry and classification. If you are a casual employee, you are entitled to a casual loading of 25% on top of the base rate. This calculator has a checkbox to add that loading automatically. Never enter a rate that already includes casual loading – always start with the base rate.
Understanding the Australia average salary
The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) publishes Average Weekly Earnings (AWE) each May and November. The most recent data (May 2026) shows full-time adult ordinary time earnings of $2,083.70 per week. That is an average, not a median for any specific job or industry. It includes all full-time adults across Australia, so it is a broad benchmark often referred to as the "Australia average salary". For a 38-hour week, that average equates to roughly $108,352 per year. Remember, this is an average of ordinary-time earnings – it does not include overtime, bonuses, or part-time workers. The ABS also reports all employees total earnings of $1,579.20 per week, which includes part-time and casual workers. When you see the phrase "australia average salary", it usually refers to the full-time adult ordinary time figure.
Tax and Medicare levy
Once you have your annual gross, you can estimate your take-home pay using the 2026–27 resident tax rates. The tax-free threshold is $18,200. Above that, you pay 15% on income up to $45,000, 30% up to $135,000, 37% up to $190,000, and 45% on anything over $190,000. The Medicare levy is generally 2% of your taxable income. This calculator uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds for Medicare because the 2026–27 thresholds were not confirmed at the time of calculation. The estimate does not include the Medicare levy surcharge, HELP repayments, or salary packaging. For a more detailed breakdown, see our take-home pay guide.
Superannuation guarantee
Super is paid on top of your ordinary earnings. The super guarantee rate is 12% from 1 July 2026, up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830 per year. If your annual ordinary earnings exceed that cap, super is only paid on the first $270,830. The calculator shows super as an additional amount – it is not deducted from your gross salary. For more on how super interacts with salary packaging, visit super and packaging.
Fortnightly pay
Many Australian employers pay fortnightly. To find your fortnightly gross, multiply your weekly gross by 2. For example, if your weekly gross is $1,140 (based on $30 per hour for 38 hours), your fortnightly gross is $2,280. The calculator can display fortnightly figures to help you budget.
Using the timesheet and other tools
This page is part of a suite of tools. The timesheet is the home page where you enter your base hourly rate and choose whether to add casual loading. You can also explore pay guides for award-specific information, reference tables for tax and super rates, and about the timesheet for methodology. If you want to compare your rate to industry averages, see our average pay page. For a deeper look at how casual loading works, visit casual loading. And if you are researching what a particular job pays, the job pay section may help.
Important notes and disclaimer
Annual pay here is hourly rate × hours per week × 52. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax is the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.
Always check your specific award or agreement with the Fair Work Ombudsman for exact rates. The Australia average salary is a useful benchmark but does not reflect your individual circumstances. Use this calculator as a starting point for your financial planning.
