Understanding the Australia Minimum Wage 2025 and How to Convert Hourly to Annual Pay
Based on the australia minimum wage 2025 (updated to $26.44/hour from July 2026), a full-time worker on 38 hours per week earns about $52,267 annually before tax and super.
Converting Your Hourly Rate to Annual Pay
If you earn an hourly wage or have a salary offer, the simplest way to estimate your annual gross pay is to multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work each week, then by 52 weeks. This formula assumes you work the same number of hours every week, with no unpaid overtime, penalty rates, or allowances. For a standard full-time role, we assume 38 hours per week – the ordinary hours defined by the Fair Work Ombudsman for many awards. You can use the timesheet on our home page to quickly convert your base hourly rate into annual, fortnightly, and weekly figures. Just type your hourly rate, and if you’re a casual employee, tick the checkbox to add 25% casual loading on top – never enter a rate that already includes loading.
Why 38 Hours?
The 38-hour week is the benchmark for full-time employment under the National Employment Standards. It’s used by the Fair Work Commission when setting the National Minimum Wage and by the Australian Bureau of Statistics for average earnings data. If your award or agreement specifies different hours, adjust the formula accordingly. For part-time or irregular hours, multiply your actual weekly average by 52.
The Australia Minimum Wage 2025 and Current Rates
The australia minimum wage 2025 was the rate set by the Fair Work Commission for the 2025–26 financial year. While our reference provides the rate from 1 July 2026 ($26.44 per hour, $1,004.90 per week for 38 hours), the 2025 figure was lower and adjusted annually. The National Minimum Wage applies to employees not covered by an award or registered agreement. Many workers, however, are covered by industry or occupation awards that set higher minimum rates. For example, hospitality, retail, and manufacturing awards each have their own pay scales. Always check your specific award using pay guides or the Fair Work Ombudsman website.
Casual Loading
Casual employees receive a 25% loading on top of the base hourly rate to compensate for not receiving paid leave. For the current minimum wage, that means $33.05 per hour ($26.44 × 1.25). Our timesheet tool includes a checkbox to apply this loading automatically. Remember, superannuation is calculated on the ordinary time earnings, which for casuals includes the loading.
Fortnightly Pay and Tax Considerations
Many employers pay fortnightly, so it’s helpful to know your gross pay per fortnight: simply multiply your weekly pay by 2. For a full-time worker on the australia minimum wage 2025 (using the 2026 rate), fortnightly gross is $2,009.44 before tax. From that, the Australian Taxation Office withholds tax based on the 2026–27 resident tax scale:
- Nil tax on the first $18,200
- 15% on income from $18,201 to $45,000
- 30% on income from $45,001 to $135,000
- 37% on income from $135,001 to $190,000
- 45% on income above $190,000
Plus a Medicare levy of 2% (using 2025–26 single reduction thresholds as 2026–27 thresholds were not confirmed). Our take-home pay estimator can help you see net amounts, but note it does not deduct HELP repayments, the Medicare levy surcharge, or salary sacrifice arrangements.
Superannuation on Top
Employers must pay super guarantee contributions of 12% of your ordinary time earnings, up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830 per year. Super is paid on top of your salary – it is not deducted from your gross pay. For example, on a $52,267 annual salary (minimum wage, 38 hours), the employer would add about $6,272 in super. See our super and packaging page for more details.
Key Differences in Ordinary-Time Earnings
The National Minimum Wage is a floor, but most full-time employees earn more. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ Average Weekly Earnings for May 2026, full-time adult ordinary time earnings were $2,083.70 per week. That’s about $108,352 annually – more than double the minimum wage. All employees total earnings (including part-time) averaged $1,579.20 per week. These averages are not medians for any specific job; they are broad industry and state averages. For job-specific pay, refer to job pay or your award.
Using the Timesheet Tool
Our the timesheet is designed for quick conversions. Enter your base hourly rate (without casual loading), and the tool shows annual, fortnightly, and weekly gross pay. Tick the casual loading box if applicable. The tool uses the 38-hour week assumption but you can adjust hours if needed. It also provides an estimate of tax and super based on the latest rates. For detailed award rates, visit reference tables or minimum wage pages.
Important Disclaimer
Annual pay shown is hourly rate × hours per week × 52. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax uses the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.
Open the same rate on the home timesheet. Read the reference tables before treating a figure as your pay.
