From Hourly Rate to Annual Salary: Comparing with the Average Salary in India

For a 38-hour week, annual gross pay is hourly rate × 38 × 52; the national minimum wage is $26.44/hour ($1,004.90/week) and casual loading adds 25%.

Understanding Your Annual Pay from an Hourly Rate

If you’re paid by the hour or considering a salary offer, converting your hourly rate to an annual figure helps you compare jobs, budget, and plan for tax and super. In Australia, the standard full-time week is 38 hours, and most annual calculations use 52 weeks per year. This page explains the formula, the key pay concepts, and how the average salary in India might relate to your situation.

The Basic Formula

Annual gross pay = hourly rate × hours per week × 52.

For a 38-hour week: annual gross = hourly rate × 38 × 52.

This gives you the amount before tax, Medicare, and any salary sacrifice. It assumes you work the same hours every week, with no unpaid overtime, penalty rates, or allowances. If you work fewer or more hours, adjust the weekly figure accordingly.

Fortnightly Pay

Many Australian employees are paid fortnightly. To find your gross fortnightly pay, multiply your weekly pay by 2. For a 38-hour week at $26.44/hour (the national minimum wage), weekly pay is $1,004.90, so fortnightly gross is $2,009.80. This is a handy reference for budgeting.

The National Minimum Wage and Award Rates

The Fair Work Commission sets the National Minimum Wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour for adult employees not covered by an award or enterprise agreement. This is the legal floor. Most employees are covered by an award (such as the Health Services Award or SCHADS Award) have higher rates. For award-free employees, the minimum is $26.44/hour. Casual employees get 25% loading on top – $33.05/hour. The Fair Work Ombudsman provides pay guides for each award. Always check your correct classification.

Casual Loading

Casual employees receive a 25% loading instead of paid leave. When using our timesheet, enter your base hourly rate (without loading) and tick the casual loading box. The tool adds 25% automatically. Never type a rate that already includes casual loading.

Superannuation Paid on Top

Super guarantee is 12% of your ordinary earnings, paid by your employer on top of your gross pay. It is not deducted from your hourly rate. Super stops when your earnings reach the maximum contribution base ($270,830 per year in 2026–27). For example, on a $60,000 salary, super adds $7,200.

Tax and Medicare

Your take-home pay depends on tax and the Medicare levy. For 2026–27, the resident tax rates are:

  • $0–$18,200: nil
  • $18,201–$45,000: 15%
  • $45,001–$135,000: 30%
  • $135,001–$190,000: 37%
  • Over $190,000: 45%

Medicare levy is generally 2% of taxable income. The 2025–26 single reduction thresholds are used here (the 2026–27 thresholds were not confirmed). HELP loans, Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted in this estimate.

The Average Salary in India – A Note for Comparison

If you are comparing Australian pay with the average salary in India, remember that direct conversion of currency does not reflect purchasing power or living costs. The average salary in India varies widely by industry, city, and experience level. For example, a software engineer in Bangalore may earn a very different amount from a teacher in a rural area. Reliable sources such as the Indian Ministry of Statistics or industry surveys provide data, but we do not quote a specific figure here because it is not part of the Australian context. When evaluating an offer, consider exchange rates, cost of living, and benefits. Our calculator uses Australian dollars and Australian tax rules.

Example Calculation

Let’s take a base hourly rate of $30.00 (above the minimum wage).

  • Weekly: $30 × 38 = $1,140.00
  • Fortnightly: $1,140 × 2 = $2,280.00
  • Annual gross: $30 × 38 × 52 = $59,280.00
  • Super (12%): $7,113.60 paid on top
  • Estimated tax (2026–27, no HELP): about $8,717 plus Medicare $1,185.60 = $9,902.60 total deductions
  • Estimated take-home: $49,377.40 per year

Important Disclaimer

Annual pay here is hourly rate × hours per week × 52. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax is the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.

Questions people ask next

How do I convert my hourly rate to an annual salary?

Multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work per week, then by 52 weeks. For a standard full-time week of 38 hours, the formula is: hourly rate × 38 × 52. This gives your gross annual pay before tax and super. For example, $30/hour × 38 × 52 = $59,280 per year.

What is casual loading and how does it affect my pay?

Casual loading is an extra 25% paid on top of the base hourly rate to compensate for not receiving paid leave (sick leave, annual leave). The national minimum wage for casuals is $33.05/hour ($26.44 base + 25%). When using our calculator, enter your base rate and check the casual loading box – do not enter a rate that already includes loading.

How is superannuation calculated and is it included in my annual pay?

Superannuation (super) is paid by your employer on top of your ordinary earnings at a rate of 12% (from 1 July 2026). It is not part of your take-home pay. Super is calculated on your gross ordinary earnings up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830 per year. For example, on a $59,280 salary, super would be an extra $7,113.60.
