Behaviour Support Practitioner Salary: Hourly Rates, Award Coverage, and Take-Home Pay
A behaviour support practitioner salary is typically based on the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Award or the Health Professionals and Support Services Award, with minimum hourly rates starting around $26–$33 depending on classification and experience, assuming a 38-hour week.
Behaviour Support Practitioner Salary: Understanding Your Pay
If you are searching for a behaviour support practitioner salary, you likely work in the disability or health sector. Your minimum pay is set by a modern award, and your actual take-home pay depends on your hourly rate, hours worked, casual loading, superannuation, and tax. This guide explains how to convert your hourly rate to annual, fortnightly, and weekly figures, and what to expect from award rates and the National Minimum Wage.
Hourly to Annual: The Formula
The standard formula for annual gross pay is:
Hourly rate × hours per week × 52 weeks
We assume a full-time week of 38 hours, which is the ordinary hours under most awards and the National Employment Standards. For example, if your behaviour support practitioner salary is $30 per hour:
- Weekly: $30 × 38 = $1,140
- Fortnightly: $1,140 × 2 = $2,280
- Annual: $1,140 × 52 = $59,280
If you work part-time or casual, adjust the weekly hours accordingly. Our the timesheet calculator lets you enter your base hourly rate and optionally add 25% casual loading.
National Minimum Wage vs. Award Rates
From 1 July 2026, the National Minimum Wage is $26.44 per hour, or $1,004.90 per week for 38 hours. However, most behaviour support practitioners are covered by an award that sets higher minimum rates. The two most common awards are:
- Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award (SCHADS) – covers disability support workers, behaviour support practitioners, and similar roles.
- Health Professionals and Support Services Award – covers allied health professionals including some behaviour support practitioners.
Both awards have multiple classification levels based on qualifications and experience. For example, a SCHADS Level 4 employee may earn around $28–$32 per hour, while a Health Professionals Level 1 may earn $30–$35 per hour. Exact rates are published in the Fair Work Ombudsman’s pay guides and the Fair Work Commission’s Modern Awards Pay Database.
Casual Loading and Superannuation
If you are employed casually, your award entitles you to a 25% casual loading on top of the base hourly rate. This means a $30 base rate becomes $37.50 per hour. Never enter a rate that already includes casual loading into our calculator; use the base rate and tick the casual loading checkbox.
Superannuation is paid on top of your ordinary earnings. The super guarantee rate is 12% from 1 July 2026, up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830. If your annual gross is $60,000, your employer contributes an extra $7,200 to your super fund. This is not deducted from your take-home pay. See our super and packaging page for more details.
Tax and Medicare
Your take-home pay after tax depends on the 2026–27 resident tax rates:
- $0 – $18,200: Nil
- $18,201 – $45,000: 15%
- $45,001 – $135,000: 30%
- $135,001 – $190,000: 37%
- Above $190,000: 45%
Plus Medicare levy of 2% (single reduction thresholds not confirmed for 2026–27). For a behaviour support practitioner earning $60,000, tax is approximately $9,000 plus Medicare, leaving around $51,000 after tax. Use our take-home pay for a precise estimate.
Fortnightly pay is often easier to think in fortnightly terms: weekly × 2. If you want to know your fortnightly pay, double your weekly figure.
Average Earnings Comparison
The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS Average Weekly Earnings, May 2026: full-time adult ordinary time $2,083.70 per week, all employees $1,579.20. These are higher than most behaviour support practitioner salaries, but they are higher.
Important Disclaimer
This is an estimate. The formula assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, no salary. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax is the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.
