How to Convert an Hourly Business Manager Salary to Annual Pay

For a full-time business manager working 38 hours per week, annual gross pay is the hourly rate multiplied by 1,976 hours (38 × 52).

Understanding the Hourly to Annual Conversion

When you're evaluating a business manager salary offer, converting an hourly rate to an annual figure helps you compare roles across industries. The standard method is simple: multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work each week, then multiply by 52 weeks. For a full-time employee, the Fair Work Ombudsman and the Fair Work Commission define a full-time week as 38 ordinary hours. So the formula becomes:

Annual gross pay ≈ hourly rate × 38 × 52

This gives you 1,976 hours per year. For example, if your hourly rate is $50, your annual gross pay would be approximately $98,800. Remember that this assumes you work the same number of hours every week, with no unpaid overtime, penalty rates, or allowances.

Fortnightly and Weekly Pay

Many Australian employers pay fortnightly. To find your fortnightly gross pay, simply double your weekly pay. Weekly pay is your hourly rate times 38. So a $50/hour business manager would earn $1,900 per week and $3,800 per fortnight before tax.

National Minimum Wage vs Award Rates

Not every role is covered by the same minimum. The national minimum wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour for award/agreement-free employees, as confirmed by the Fair Work Commission. Casual employees receive a 25% loading, making the minimum casual rate $33.05 per hour.

However, many business managers are covered by an award, such as the Commercial Sales Award [MA000083] or the Clerks Award. Award rates are often higher than the national minimum wage. The Fair Work Ombudsman publishes pay guides for each award that list minimum pay rates, allowances, and penalty rates. Always check the relevant award to ensure you're being paid correctly.

Casual Loading

If you work as a casual business manager, your hourly rate should include a 25% casual loading on top of the base award rate. This compensates for not receiving paid leave. When using our timesheet, you can tick the casual loading checkbox to add 25% to your base hourly rate. Never enter a rate that already includes casual loading; the tool applies it automatically.

Tax and Medicare Levy

Once you have your annual gross pay, you can estimate your take-home pay using the 2026–27 resident tax scales. The Australian Taxation Office applies these rates:

  • Nil tax on the first $18,200
  • 15% on income from $18,201 to $45,000
  • 30% on income from $45,001 to $135,000
  • 37% on income from $135,001 to $190,000
  • 45% on income above $190,000

In addition, most residents pay a Medicare levy of 2% of taxable income. The 2025–26 single reduction thresholds are used here (the 2026–27 thresholds were not confirmed at the time of calculation). For a business manager earning $98,800 annually, the estimated tax would be about $22,267 plus Medicare of $1,976, leaving around $74,557 after tax (excluding HELP or surcharges).

Superannuation Paid on Top

Super guarantee contributions are 12% of your ordinary earnings, paid by your employer on top of your gross salary. For 2026–27, the maximum contribution base is $270,830. So if your annual gross is $98,800, your employer would contribute an additional $11,856 to your super fund. This is not deducted from your pay; it's an extra cost for the employer.

Business Manager Salary Benchmarks

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics' Average Weekly Earnings (May 2026), full-time adult ordinary time earnings were $2,083.70 per week, or about $108,352 annually. All employees total earnings (including part-time) averaged $1,579.20 per week. A business manager salary often falls above the national average, but actual rates depend on industry, experience, and location. Use our hourly conversion tool to compare offers, and check the relevant pay guides for minimum entitlements.

Important Disclaimer

Annual pay here is hourly rate × hours per week × 52. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax is the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.

Questions people ask next

How do I calculate annual salary from an hourly rate?

Multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work each week, then multiply by 52 weeks. For a standard full-time week of 38 hours, the formula is: hourly rate × 38 × 52. This gives your gross annual pay before tax and super.

What is the current national minimum wage in Australia?

From 1 July 2026, the national minimum wage is $26.44 per hour, or $1,004.90 per week for 38 hours. Casual employees receive a 25% loading, making the minimum casual rate $33.05 per hour. These rates are set by the Fair Work Commission.

How is superannuation calculated on top of my salary?

Employers must pay super guarantee contributions of 12% of your ordinary earnings, on top of your gross salary. For 2026–27, the maximum contribution base is $270,830. Super is not deducted from your pay; it is an additional cost for your employer.
