Convert Hourly Rate to Annual Salary: Including CBB Salary Packaging and Tax Estimates

For a full-time employee working 38 hours per week, annual gross pay is hourly rate × 38 × 52, with super paid on top at 12%.

Converting Hourly Rate to Annual Salary

When you have an hourly rate or a salary offer, the first step is to understand the annual equivalent. The standard formula is straightforward: multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work each week, then multiply by 52 weeks. For most full-time employees in Australia, we assume a 38-hour week, as set by the Fair Work Ombudsman. This gives you the gross annual pay before tax, super, and any deductions.

The Basic Calculation

Annual gross ≈ hourly rate × hours per week × 52

For example, if you earn $30 per hour and work 38 hours each week: $30 × 38 × 52 = $59,280 per year.

If you are paid fortnightly, your gross fortnightly pay is simply your weekly pay multiplied by two. So from the same example, weekly pay is $30 × 38 = $1,140, and fortnightly pay is $2,280.

This calculation assumes you work the same hours every week, with no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, and no allowances. It also assumes you do not use salary sacrifice arrangements such as CBB salary packaging. If you do use CBB salary packaging, your taxable income will be lower, which affects tax and possibly super, but our estimate does not account for that.

Different Pay Rates: Minimum Wage, Awards, and Casual Loading

Australia has several pay benchmarks. The National Minimum Wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour, or $1004.90 per week for 38 hours. Casual employees receive a 25% loading on top, making it $33.05 per hour. This loading compensates for the lack of paid leave.

Award rates often set higher minimums for specific industries. The Fair Work Commission reviews these each year. If you are covered by an award, your minimum pay may be above the national minimum. Always check your award or enterprise agreement.

When using the timesheet, you can enter your base hourly rate. There is a checkbox to add 25% casual loading. Do not enter a rate that already includes casual loading; the tool adds it for you.

Superannuation Is Paid On Top

Super guarantee is currently 12% of your ordinary earnings, paid by your employer on top of your gross pay. It is not deducted from your salary. For the example above, the employer would contribute an extra $7,113.60 per year (12% of $59,280), up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830. Our annual estimate includes super as a separate figure, not as part of your take-home pay.

Tax and Medicare

Your take-home pay depends on tax and the Medicare levy. For 2026–27, the resident tax rates are:

  • Nil up to $18,200
  • 15% from $18,201 to $45,000
  • 30% from $45,001 to $135,000
  • 37% from $135,001 to $190,000
  • 45% above $190,000

Medicare levy is generally 2% of taxable income. We use the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 thresholds were not confirmed in this estimate. This is an estimate only.

State Differences in Ordinary-Time Earnings

The Australian Bureau of Statistics publishes Average Weekly Earnings (AWE) data. For May 2026, full-time adult ordinary time earnings averaged $2,083.70 per week. That is an average across all full-time employees, not a median for any specific job. All employees total earnings (including part-time) averaged $1,579.20 per week. These figures are useful for comparing your pay to the broader market, but they are not job-specific medians. For job-specific pay, refer to award rates or industry benchmarks.

Putting It All Together

To estimate your annual salary from an hourly rate:

  1. Multiply your hourly rate by your weekly hours (usually 38 hours).
  2. Multiply that by 52 to get annual gross.
  3. Add super at 12% super (employer contribution.
  4. Apply tax and Medicare to get an estimate of take-home pay.

Remember that this estimate does not include CBB salary packaging, which can reduce your taxable income. If you are considering a salary packaging arrangement, such as CBB salary packaging for cars or other benefits, your taxable income will be lower, and your tax and Medicare will be different. Our estimate assumes no salary sacrifice.

Final Notes

This article uses the on-site reference figures from the Fair Work Ombudsman and Australian Bureau of Statistics. The National Minimum Wage is $26.44 per hour, $1004.9/week for 38 hours. The ABS AWE is an average, not a median. The tax scale is 2026-27. Medicare is 2% of taxable income. Super is 12% of ordinary earnings, paid on top of the maximum contribution base of $270,830. The formula is hourly × hours per week × 52. The timesheet is the home page. The user enters a base hourly rate. The checkbox adds 25% casual loading on top. Do not tell the user to type a rate that already includes casual loading. Never invent a job median. This keyword is covered by the on-site reference below. If the reference is an industry or state average, say that it is an average and not this job's median.

Questions people ask next

How do I calculate annual salary from my hourly rate?

Multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work each week, then by 52 weeks. For a standard full-time role, we assume 38 hours per week. So annual gross = hourly × 38 × 52. If you work different hours, adjust accordingly. This estimate does not include overtime, penalties, or salary packaging like CBB salary packaging.

What is the National Minimum Wage in 2026-27?

From 1 July 2026, the National Minimum Wage is $26.44 per hour, or $1004.90 per week for 38 hours. Casual employees receive a 25% loading, making it $33.05 per hour. Award rates may be higher. Super is paid on top of these rates at 12%.

How does CBB salary packaging affect my take-home pay?

CBB salary packaging (also known as salary sacrifice) lets you pay for certain benefits with pre-tax income, reducing your taxable income and tax. Our estimate does not include salary packaging. To see the effect, you would need to adjust your taxable income accordingly. The Australian Taxation Office sets the rules for CBB salary packaging.
