Understanding Your Pay: From Christian Petracca Salary to the National Minimum Wage

For most employees, annual pay is hourly rate × 38 hours × 52 weeks, but Christian Petracca's salary is determined differently and not covered by awards.

Understanding Your Pay: From Christian Petracca Salary to the National Minimum Wage

Whether you're curious about a high-profile figure like Christian Petracca's salary or simply want to understand your own earnings, converting an hourly rate to an annual figure is a fundamental skill. The Fair Work Ombudsman and Fair Work Commission set the rules for most Australian employees, but celebrity contracts are a different world. This guide walks you through the standard conversion using a 38-hour week, a 52-week year, and explains how tax, super, and casual loading fit in.

The Basic Formula: Hourly × Hours × 52

For the vast majority of award-covered employees, annual gross pay is calculated as:

Hourly rate × hours per week × 52 weeks

We assume a standard full-time week of 38 ordinary hours, as defined by the National Minimum Wage Order 2026. If you work part-time or different hours, adjust accordingly. For example, a rate of $30 per hour for 38 hours per week gives an annual gross of $30 × 38 × 52 = $59,280.

The National Minimum Wage and Award Rates

From 1 July 2026, the National Minimum Wage is $26.44 per hour, or $1,004.90 per week for 38 hours. This is the base rate for employees not covered by an award or agreement. Most workers, however, are covered by an award, which sets higher minimum rates. The Fair Work Ombudsman provides pay guides for each award, updated annually. Award wages increased by 4.75% from 1 July 2026.

Casual Loading: 25% on Top

Casual employees receive a 25% loading on top of the base rate. For the National Minimum Wage, that means $33.05 per hour. Our casual loading page explains when this applies. Never enter a rate that already includes casual loading into our timesheet; use the base rate and tick the casual checkbox.

Fortnightly Pay: A Handy Check

Many employers pay fortnightly. Simply multiply your weekly pay by two. For a full-time employee on the National Minimum Wage, that’s $1,004.90 × 2 = $2,009.80 gross per fortnight. This can help you budget between paydays.

Tax and Medicare Levy

Using the 2026–27 resident tax rates from the Australian Taxation Office:

  • Nil tax on the first $18,200
  • 15% on income between $18,201 and $45,000
  • 30% on income between $45,001 and $135,000
  • 37% on income between $135,001 and $190,000
  • 45% on income above $190,000

Plus a Medicare levy of 2% (based on 2025–26 single reduction thresholds as 2026–27 thresholds were not confirmed). For example, a $59,280 annual salary would have tax of approximately $8,467 plus Medicare of $1,186, leaving a take-home of about $49,627. Use our take-home pay calculator for a precise estimate.

Superannuation: Paid on Top

Employers must pay superannuation guarantee of 12% of your ordinary earnings, on top of your salary, up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830 per year. For a $59,280 salary, that’s an extra $7,113.60 contributed to your super fund. This is not deducted from your pay; it’s an additional cost to your employer. Learn more at super and packaging.

What About Christian Petracca’s Salary?

Christian Petracca’s salary as an AFL player is not set by the National Minimum Wage or any award. It is negotiated under a collective bargaining agreement and individual contract, often exceeding $1 million per year. While the hourly conversion formula still applies in theory, his actual hourly rate would be far above typical award rates. For most workers, however, the Fair Work Ombudsman’s pay guides and the reference tables on this site provide accurate benchmarks.

Average Weekly Earnings Context

The Australian Bureau of Statistics reports that full-time adult ordinary time earnings were $2,083.70 per week in May 2026. All employees (including part-time) averaged $1,579.20 per week. These figures help you see where your pay sits relative to the broader workforce. Our average pay page has more details.

Important Disclaimer

Annual pay calculated here is hourly rate × hours per week × 52. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax is the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.

For a personalised calculation, use the timesheet. It lets you enter your base hourly rate and optionally add casual loading. The results show your weekly, fortnightly, and annual gross pay, plus estimated tax and super.

Open the same rate on the home timesheet. Read the reference tables before treating a figure as your pay.

Questions people ask next

How do I convert my hourly rate to an annual salary?

Multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work per week, then by 52 weeks. For a full-time employee working 38 hours per week, the formula is: hourly rate × 38 × 52. This gives your gross annual salary before tax and super. Use our [hourly conversion](/topics/hourly-conversion) tool for quick calculations.

What is casual loading and how does it affect my pay?

Casual loading is an additional 25% paid on top of the base hourly rate to compensate for lack of paid leave and other entitlements. For example, the National Minimum Wage of $26.44 per hour becomes $33.05 per hour for casual employees. Always check if your rate already includes loading; our [casual loading](/topics/casual-loading) page explains more.

How is superannuation calculated on my salary?

Superannuation is paid by your employer on top of your salary at a rate of 12% of your ordinary earnings, up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830 per year. For example, if your annual salary is $60,000, your employer contributes an additional $7,200 to your super fund. See [super and packaging](/topics/super-and-packaging) for details.
