Civil Engineering Salary in Australia: How to Convert Hourly Rates to Annual Pay
For a civil engineer earning the median hourly rate of $59, working 38 hours per week, the annual gross salary is approximately $116,584 before tax and super.
Understanding the Civil Engineering Salary in Australia
When researching a civil engineering salary in Australia, it helps to start with the hourly rate and work up to annual, fortnightly, and after-tax figures. This guide uses the Fair Work Ombudsman’s Professional Employees Award 2020, the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ earnings data, and the 2026–27 tax rates to give you a clear picture.
The Basic Formula: Hourly to Annual
The standard calculation is:
Annual gross = hourly rate × hours per week × 52 weeks
For a full-time employee under the award, ordinary hours are 38 per week (). If your actual hours differ, adjust accordingly. The same formula works for part-time and casual employees, but casuals receive a 25% loading on top of the base rate.
Award Minimums for Civil Engineers
The Professional Employees Award 2020 covers many civil engineering roles. From 1 July 2026, the minimum annual wages and hourly rates are:
- Level 1 Graduate (3-year degree): $66,825 per year / $33.71 per hour
- Level 1 Graduate (4 or 5-year degree): $68,538 / $34.57
- Level 2 Experienced professional: $78,836 / $39.77
- Level 3 Professional/Senior: $86,157 / $43.46
- Level 4 Professional: $97,173 / $49.02
- Level 5 Experienced medical research (not typical for civil): $117,064 / $59.05
These rates are the legal minimums. Most civil engineers with experience earn above these levels. The award also provides penalty rates for work outside ordinary hours, overtime, and casual loading ().
Market Median: What Civil Engineers Actually Earn
According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (via Jobs and Skills Australia), the median hourly earnings for full-time non-managerial civil engineering professionals is $59 per hour, and median weekly earnings are $2,217 (). This is based on a 44-hour average week, but for consistency with award calculations, we use 38 hours to estimate annual pay.
Using the median hourly rate of $59:
- Annual gross (38 hours): $59 × 38 × 52 = $116,584
- Fortnightly gross: $116,584 ÷ 26 = $4,484
This is well above the award minimums and reflects the market value for experienced engineers.
Tax and Medicare on Your Civil Engineering Salary
For the 2026–27 income year, the resident tax rates are:
- $0 – $18,200: Nil
- $18,201 – $45,000: 15% for each dollar over $18,200
- $45,001 – $135,000: 30% for each dollar over $45,000
- $135,001 – $190,000: 37% for each dollar over $135,000
- $190,001+: 45% for each dollar over $190,000
Medicare levy is generally 2% of taxable income (using 2025–26 single reduction thresholds as the 2026–27 thresholds were not confirmed).
Example tax estimate on $116,584:
- Tax on first $18,200: $0
- Tax on $18,201–$45,000: 15% of $26,800 = $4,020
- Tax on $45,001–$116,584: 30% of $71,584 = $21,475.20
- Total tax: $25,495.20
- Medicare levy (2%): $2,331.68
- Total tax + Medicare: $27,826.88
- After-tax annual: $88,757.12
- After-tax fortnightly: $3,413.73

Superannuation: Paid on Top
Superannuation guarantee is 12% of ordinary earnings, paid by your employer on top of your salary. For the $116,584 example, that’s an extra $13,990 per year contributed to your super fund, up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830. This is not deducted from your pay. Casual Loading and Part-Time Work
If you work as a casual civil engineer, you are entitled to a 25% loading on the base hourly rate instead of paid leave. For example, on the award Level 2 rate of $39.77, the casual rate is $39.77 × 1.25 = $49.71 per hour. The casual loading page explains how this affects annual estimates.
Part-time employees are paid pro-rata on the same hourly rates as full-timers, working fewer than 38 hours per week by agreement.
Important Notes on This Estimate
This calculation assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax uses the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.
