Annual Pay Calculator: Defence Salary Sacrifice and State Differences in Ordinary-Time Earnings

For a 38-hour week, annual gross is hourly rate × 38 × 52, with super paid on top at 12% up to the $270,830 contribution base.

Converting Your Hourly Rate to Annual Pay

To estimate your annual gross pay, multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work each week, then by 52 weeks. This article assumes a standard full-time week of 38 hours unless stated otherwise. The formula: annual gross ≈ hourly rate × hours per week × 52. For a 38-hour week, that's hourly × 1,976.

This calculation gives a simple estimate. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Superannuation is paid on top at 12% of ordinary earnings, up to the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax is based on the 2026–27 resident scale. For a detailed breakdown, use our timesheet to enter your base rate and add casual loading if applicable.

State Differences in Ordinary-Time Earnings

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) reports that full-time adult ordinary-time earnings for all employees averaged $2,083.70 per week nationally in May 2026. This is the average across all states combined. However, state differences are significant: Western Australia often shows higher earnings due to mining, while Tasmania and South Australia trend lower. These are averages, not a job median. For your own conversion, use your actual hourly rate, not a state average. See our reference tables for more on state comparisons.

Minimum Wage, Award Rates, and Casual Loading

The Fair Work Commission sets the National Minimum Minimum from 1 July 2026: $26.44/hour for 38 hours. For casual employees, the 25% loading on top is $33.05/hour including loading. If you are a casual, your rate includes the loading. Do not tell the reader to type a rate that already includes loading. Check our casual loading for more.

Tax and Super and Salary Sacrifice

When you use the formula, you can also estimate your take-home pay after tax and super. The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) uses 2026–27: nil to $18,200; 15% to $45,000; 30% to $135,000; 37% to $190,000; 45% above that. Medicare levy generally 2%. Super guarantee 12% of ordinary earnings, paid on top, maximum contribution base $270830. For defence salary sacrifice, you can sacrifice part of your pre-tax salary for benefits like a car or super contributions. This reduces your taxable income but does not change the ordinary earnings used for super (based on your base hourly rate). When converting hourly to annual, use your base base before sacrifice. The sacrifice lowers your take-home and tax, but your gross figure (hourly × hours × 52) remains the same for super purposes. See our super and packaging for more.

Fortnightly and Bi-Weekly

If you are paid fortnightly, multiply your weekly by 2. For a 38-hour week, fortnightly gross = hourly × 38 × 2 = hourly × 1,976. This helps if you have a salary offer.

Disclaimer

Annual pay here is hourly × hours per week × 52. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax is the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.

Questions people ask next

How does defence salary sacrifice affect my annual pay calculation?

Defence salary sacrifice lets you exchange part of your pre-tax salary for benefits like a car or super contributions. This reduces your taxable income but does not change the ordinary earnings used for super guarantee (which is based on your base hourly rate). When converting hourly to annual, use your base hourly rate before sacrifice. The sacrifice lowers your take-home pay and tax, but your gross annual figure (hourly × hours × 52) remains the same for super purposes. See our [super and packaging](/topics/super-and-packaging) page for more.

What are the main differences in ordinary-time earnings between Australian states?

The Australian Bureau of Statistics reports that full-time adult ordinary-time earnings averaged $2,083.70 per week nationally in May 2026. However, state differences exist: Western Australia often has higher earnings due to mining, while Tasmania and South Australia tend to be lower. These are averages, not a job median. For your own conversion, use your actual hourly rate, not a state average. Check [average pay](/topics/average-pay) for more context.

Should I include casual loading when converting my hourly rate to annual?

If you are a casual employee, your hourly rate usually includes a 25% casual loading on top of the base award rate. When converting to annual, use the rate you actually receive (including loading) as your hourly figure. Do not add loading again. For example, the National Minimum Wage for casual rate is $33.05/hour includes the loading. Our [casual loading](/topics/casual-loading) page explains more.
