Does salary sacrifice reduce your taxable income? A guide to hourly-to-annual pay
For a full-time 38-hour week, your annual gross pay is your hourly rate multiplied by 1,976 hours (38 × 52).
Does salary sacrifice reduce your taxable income? Understanding your hourly to annual pay
If you’re wondering does salary sacrifice reduce your taxable income, the short answer is yes – but it’s not included in the simple hourly-to-annual conversion we explain here. Salary sacrifice arrangements lower your taxable income by diverting pre-tax dollars towards benefits like extra super or a car. However, this guide focuses on the basic calculation of your gross annual pay from an hourly rate, and the tax and super that apply before any packaging.
The formula: hourly rate × hours per week × 52
To convert an hourly rate to an annual salary, multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work each week, then multiply by 52 weeks. For a standard full-time worker, we assume 38 hours per week (the ordinary hours under the Fair Work Act). That gives:
Annual gross pay = hourly rate × 38 × 52 = hourly rate × 1,976
For example, at the National Minimum Wage of $26.44 per hour, annual gross pay is $26.44 × 1,976 = $52,245.44. If you’re a casual employee, a 25% loading is added on top of the base rate – see our casual loading page. Never type a rate that already includes casual loading; use the checkbox to add it.
Fortnightly pay and weekly pay
If you’re paid fortnightly, your gross pay is simply your weekly pay multiplied by two. For a 38-hour week at $26.44, weekly pay is $1,004.90 (as set by the Fair Work Commission), so fortnightly is $2,009.80. This estimate assumes the same rate every week with no unpaid overtime, penalty rates, allowances, or salary sacrifice.
National Minimum Wage versus award rates
The National Minimum Wage is the legal floor for employees not covered by an award or registered agreement. From 1 July 2026, it is $26.44 per hour (or $33.05 for casuals including 25% loading). However, most Australian workers are covered by a modern award that sets higher minimum rates for their industry or occupation. For example, the Hospitality Industry General Award has different rates for different classifications. The pay guides on this site can help you find the correct award rate. The Australian Bureau of Statistics’ Average Weekly Earnings (May 2026) show full-time adult ordinary time earnings of $2,083.70 per week – but that is an average, not the median for your specific job.
Tax and Medicare levy
Tax is calculated using the 2026–27 resident tax rates:
- Nil on the first $18,200
- 15% on income from $18,201 to $45,000
- 30% on income from $45,001 to $135,000
- 37% on income from $135,001 to $190,000
- 45% on income above $190,000
Plus a Medicare levy of 2% (using the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds, as the 2026–27 thresholds were not confirmed at the time of this estimate). This estimate does not deduct HELP repayments, the Medicare levy surcharge, or any salary packaging. So, does salary sacrifice reduce your taxable income? Yes, but it is not factored into this simple calculation. If you salary sacrifice, your taxable income decreases, which may lower your tax bracket and reduce the amount of tax you pay.
Superannuation guarantee
Your employer must pay superannuation guarantee contributions on top of your ordinary earnings. The rate from 1 July 2026 is 12%, up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830 per year. For example, on the National Minimum Wage annual pay of $52,245.44, super would be $6,269.45 (12% of ordinary earnings). This estimate shows super as an additional amount, not deducted from your gross pay.
Important disclaimers
This annual pay estimate is your hourly rate multiplied by hours per week times 52. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax uses the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.
