How to Convert Your Hourly Rate to Annual Salary: From the Minimum Wage to Erling Haaland's Salary
Annual pay is calculated as hourly rate × hours per week × 52, assuming a standard 38-hour week, with superannuation paid on top at 12%.
How to Convert Hourly Pay to Annual Salary
Whether you are comparing your own earnings to a figure like Erling Haaland salary or simply working out your annual pay, the basic formula is straightforward: multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work each week, then multiply by 52 weeks. This gives your gross annual salary before tax and super.
The 38-Hour Week Assumption
Most full-time awards and agreements in Australia use a 38-hour week. The Fair Work Ombudsman uses 38 hours as the standard for full-time employees when converting annual salaries to hourly rates. For example, the Pilots Award states: divide the annual salary by 52 to get the weekly rate, then divide by 38 for the hourly rate. Our the timesheet uses the same assumption unless you change the hours.
If you work part-time or part-year, adjust the formula accordingly: annual gross = hourly × hours per week × 52. For a 38-hour week, a $30 hourly rate gives $30 × 38 × 52 = $59,280 per year. For a 20-hour week, it is $30 × 20 × 52 = $31,200.
The Fortnight View
A fortnight is two weeks. If you are paid weekly, your fortnightly gross pay is simply weekly × 2. For the $30/hour example, $30 × 38 × 2 = $2,280 per fortnight. This helps if you are on a fortnightly pay cycle.
National Minimum Wage and Award Rates
From 1 July 2026 the National Minimum Wage is $26.44 per hour for employees 21 and over. Casuals get a 25% loading, making it $33.05 per hour. The Fair Work Ombudsman says an employee who does not get paid leave should get at least $26.44 per hour or $33.05 if they do not get paid leave. Our minimum wage page explains more.
Award rates vary. Use the Fair Work Ombudsman's Pay Calculator to find your correct minimum rate.
Casual Loading
Casual employees get a 25% loading on the base rate to compensate for not receiving paid leave. The loading is paid on top of the ordinary hourly rate. Our casual loading page explains how it works. In the timesheet, you can check the box to add 25% loading. Never type a rate that already includes casual loading.
Superannuation
Super is paid on top of ordinary earnings. From 1 July 2026 the super guarantee is 12% of ordinary earnings. The maximum contribution base is $270,830 per year. Super is not deducted from your pay; it is paid on top. For a $59,280 annual salary, super is $7,113.60 per year (12% of $59,280). If your salary is above $270,830, super stops at that limit. See super and packaging for more.
Tax and Medicare
Tax is based on the 2026–27 resident scale: nil to $18,200, 15% to $45,000, 30% to $135,000, 37% to $190,000, 45% above. Medicare levy is 2% of taxable income. The tax-free threshold is included. HELP, Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted here. Use our take-home pay page for a more detailed estimate.
For a $59,280 annual salary, tax is about $8,797 plus $1,185.60 Medicare = $9,982.60 total. Take-home is $49,297.40 per year.
Comparing to Erling Haaland Salary
Erling Haaland salary is often reported in millions of pounds per year. For example, a reported figure of £20 million per year would be about $38 million AUD. To get that hourly rate, divide by 52 weeks then by 38 hours: $38,000,000 / 52 / 38 ≈ $19,230 per hour. That is far above any award rate. The formula works the same for any salary.
Important Notes
This estimate assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, no salary sacrifice. Super is only on ordinary earnings up to the maximum base. Tax is 2026–27 resident scale with full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.
