How to Calculate Your Finance Salary: Hourly to Annual Guide for 2026–27
Based on a 38-hour week and 52 weeks, the annual finance salary for the National Minimum Wage of $26.44 per hour is approximately $52,245 before tax and super.
How to Convert Your Hourly Rate to an Annual Finance Salary
If you're negotiating a job offer or planning your budget, knowing your annual finance salary from an hourly rate is essential. In Australia, the standard full-time week is 38 hours, and most annual salary calculations use 52 weeks. This guide walks you through the formula, explains the difference between minimum wage and award rates, and shows how tax and super affect your take-home pay.
The Basic Formula
Annual gross salary = hourly rate × hours per week × 52.
For a full-time employee working 38 hours per week:
Annual salary = hourly rate × 38 × 52.
For example, if your hourly rate is $30.00:
$30.00 × 38 × 52 = $59,280 per year.
This is your gross annual salary before tax, Medicare levy, and super. The same formula works for part-time hours—just replace 38 with your actual weekly hours.
National Minimum Wage and Award Rates
From 1 July 2026, the National Minimum Wage is $26.44 per hour for employees 21 years and over, according to the Fair Work Ombudsman. That works out to $1,004.90 per week for 38 hours, or an annual finance salary of about $52,245.
However, most employees are covered by an award or enterprise agreement that sets higher minimum pay rates. The Fair Work Ombudsman provides pay guides for each award. Always check the correct classification for your job before relying on the National Minimum Wage.
Casual Loading
Casual employees receive a 25% loading on top of the base hourly rate. For the National Minimum Wage, the casual rate is $33.05 per hour. When calculating your annual finance salary as a casual, use the loaded rate in the formula. Our timesheet includes a checkbox to add 25% casual loading automatically—never enter a rate that already includes the loading.
Fortnightly Pay
Many Australian employers pay fortnightly. To find your fortnightly gross pay, multiply your weekly pay by 2. Using the $30.00 per hour example:
Weekly pay = $30.00 × 38 = $1,140.00 Fortnightly pay = $1,140.00 × 2 = $2,280.00
This can help you match your budget to your pay cycle.
Tax on Your Finance Salary
Australia uses a progressive tax system. For the 2026–27 income year, the resident tax rates are:
- Nil on the first $18,200
- 15% on income from $18,201 to $45,000
- 30% on income from $45,001 to $135,000
- 37% on income from $135,001 to $190,000
- 45% on income above $190,000
Plus, the Medicare levy is generally 2% of your taxable income (with reductions for low-income earners).
For a gross annual finance salary of $59,280:
- Tax on first $18,200 = $0
- Tax on $26,800 ($18,201 to $45,000) at 15% = $4,020
- Tax on $14,280 ($45,001 to $59,280) at 30% = $4,284
- Total tax = $8,304
- Medicare levy (2% of $59,280) = $1,185.60
- Total tax and Medicare = $9,489.60
- Net annual take-home = $49,790.40
Note: This estimate uses the 2025–26 Medicare levy reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 thresholds were not confirmed. HELP loans, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not included.
Superannuation Is Paid on Top
Your employer must pay superannuation guarantee contributions of 12% of your ordinary earnings (up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830). This is paid on top of your salary, not deducted from it. For a $59,280 salary, the super contribution is $7,113.60 per year. Your total remuneration package (salary plus super) would be $66,393.60.
Average Weekly Earnings for Context
The Australian Bureau of Statistics reported that full-time adult average weekly ordinary time earnings were $2,083.70 in May 2026. That equates to an annual finance salary of about $108,352.40. All employees (including part-time) averaged $1,579.20 per week, or $82,118.40 annually. These figures help you benchmark your offer.
When to Use Annualised Wages
Some awards allow annualised wage arrangements, where you receive a flat annual amount that covers minimum pay, penalties, overtime, and allowances. The Fair Work Ombudsman explains that the annualised wage must be at least what you would have earned under the award. Employers must review the arrangement every 12 months and pay any shortfall.
Important Disclaimer
Annual pay here is hourly rate × hours per week × 52. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax is the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.
