Understanding the Forensic Scientist Salary: Hourly to Annual Conversion Guide
A forensic scientist salary is typically based on award rates under the Health Professionals and Support Services Award, with a minimum hourly rate for a 38-hour week.
Understanding the Forensic Scientist Salary Landscape
When evaluating a forensic scientist salary, it’s essential to distinguish between hourly rates, annual packages, and the additional benefits like superannuation. Forensic scientists in Australia are typically employed under the Health Professionals and Support Services Award [MA000027], which sets minimum pay rates, allowances, and penalty rates. The Fair Work Commission’s Modern Awards Pay Database provides the official data, while the Fair Work Ombudsman offers pay guides that summarise the most common rates.
This guide explains how to convert your hourly rate to an annual figure, what taxes and superannuation to expect, and how to use our tools to get a clear picture of your earnings.
Converting Hourly to Annual Pay
The standard conversion for a full-time employee working 38 hours per week is:
Annual gross pay = hourly rate × 38 hours × 52 weeks
For example, if your forensic scientist salary is $40 per hour, your annual gross would be $40 × 38 × 52 = $79,040. If you work part-time or casual hours, adjust the weekly hours accordingly. Casual employees also receive a 25% loading on top of the base hourly rate, as per the National Minimum Wage ($33.05 per hour casual from 1 July 2026).
Our hourly conversion tool lets you enter your base hourly rate and optionally add casual loading. It then calculates the annual, monthly, fortnightly, and weekly amounts. Remember, this assumes the same rate every week with no unpaid overtime, penalty rates, or allowances.
The Role of Awards and Minimum Rates
Forensic scientists are generally covered by the Health Professionals and Support Services Award. The minimum rates for this award are updated annually following the Fair Work Commission’s Wage Review. For 2026, the data is available in the Modern Awards Pay Database. The award includes classifications for different experience levels, and you may be entitled to allowances for specific tasks or qualifications.
If you are not covered by an award, your minimum pay is the National Minimum Wage: $26.44 per hour for full-time employees, or $33.05 per hour for casuals (including the 25% loading). Always check your employment contract and the applicable award using the Fair Work Ombudsman’s Pay Calculator.
For a broader perspective, the Australian Bureau of Statistics reports Average Weekly Earnings for full-time adults at $2,083.70 per week (May 2026). This is a useful benchmark, but your actual forensic scientist salary may differ based on your role, location, and experience.
Tax and Superannuation Considerations
Your take-home pay is your gross annual salary minus tax and the Medicare levy. For the 2026–27 financial year, the resident tax rates are:
- Nil on the first $18,200
- 15% on income between $18,201 and $45,000
- 30% on income between $45,001 and $135,000
- 37% on income between $135,001 and $190,000
- 45% on income above $190,000
Plus a Medicare levy of 2% (single reduction thresholds for 2025–26 apply here). Our take-home pay tool estimates your net income after these deductions.
Superannuation is paid on top of your salary. The Super Guarantee is 12% of your ordinary earnings, up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830. For example, if your annual gross is $80,000, your employer adds $9,600 to your super fund. This is not part of your take-home pay but is a valuable long-term benefit. Using Our Tools
To get a personalised estimate of your forensic scientist salary, start with the timesheet where you can enter your base hourly rate. Check the box for casual loading if applicable. Then use our reference tables to compare your rate against award minimums and industry averages.
Remember, the figures here are estimates. Always consult your employer, the Fair Work Ombudsman, or a qualified accountant for precise advice. The disclaimer below applies to all calculations on this site.
Annual pay here is hourly rate × hours per week × 52. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax is the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.
Open the same rate on the home timesheet. Read the reference tables before treating a figure as your pay.
