General Manager Salary: How to Convert Hourly to Annual with a 38-Hour Week
For a general manager salary, the annual gross pay is hourly rate × 38 hours × 52 weeks, with super and tax estimated separately.
Understanding Your Pay: Hourly to Annual Conversion
Whether you're negotiating a general manager salary or checking your current rate, converting an hourly wage to an annual figure is straightforward. The key is knowing your weekly hours and the number of weeks worked per year. For full-time employees in Australia, the standard is 38 hours per week, 52 weeks per year.
The Formula
Annual gross pay = hourly rate × hours per week × 52.
For example, if you earn $50 per hour:
- Weekly: $50 × 38 = $1,900
- Fortnightly: $1,900 × 2 = $3,800
- Annual: $50 × 38 × 52 = $98,800
This calculation assumes you work the same hours every week with no unpaid overtime, penalty rates, or allowances. It's a baseline estimate.
The 38-Hour Week and Fortnight
Australia's full-time standard is 38 ordinary hours per week, as set by the Fair Work Act. Many awards and agreements use this as the base. When you see a weekly rate, such as the National Minimum Wage of $1,004.90 for 38 hours, you can double it to get the fortnightly amount ($2,009.80).
Our timesheet uses 38 hours as the default, but you can adjust if your hours differ. The fortnight view helps with budgeting and comparing to salary offers that are quoted fortnightly.
National Minimum Wage and Award Rates
From 1 July 2026, the National Minimum Wage is $26.44 per hour or $1,004.90 per week for 38 hours, according to the Fair Work Ombudsman and the Fair Work Commission. Award minimum wages increased by 4.75% from the same date.
Casual employees receive a 25% loading on top of the base rate, making the casual minimum $33.05 per hour. This loading is included in our calculator when you tick the casual box.
Award rates vary by industry and classification. For a general manager salary, you are likely above award rates, but understanding the minimum floor is important. The Fair Work Commission's Modern Awards Pay Database provides detailed rates for each award.
General Manager Salary Context
A general manager salary is typically well above the National Minimum Wage. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, average weekly earnings for full-time adult employees (May 2026) were $2,083.70, which equates to about $108,352 per year. A general manager often earns significantly more, depending on industry, experience, and company size.
When evaluating a general manager salary offer, convert the hourly or annual figure using the 38-hour week. For example, an annual salary of $150,000 translates to approximately $75.86 per hour ($150,000 ÷ 38 ÷ 52). This helps you compare roles with different pay structures.

Tax and Super Considerations
Your take-home pay depends on tax and super. For 2026–27, the resident tax rates are:
- $0 – $18,200: nil
- $18,201 – $45,000: 15% on excess over $18,200
- $45,001 – $135,000: 30% on excess over $45,000
- $135,001 – $190,000: 37% on excess over $135,000
- Over $190,000: 45%
Plus a Medicare levy of 2% (with possible reductions for low incomes). Our calculator applies these rates using the tax-free threshold.
Super guarantee is 12% of ordinary earnings, paid on top of your salary. The maximum contribution base for 2026–27 is $270,830. So if your general manager salary is $200,000, your employer pays $24,000 in super, but only up to the cap. Our super and packaging page explains more.
Using the Calculator
Our hourly conversion tool lets you enter your base hourly rate. If you are a casual, tick the box to add 25% loading automatically. The calculator then shows:
- Weekly pay (38 hours)
- Fortnightly pay
- Annual gross
- Estimated tax and Medicare
- Super on top
Remember: the annual figure is hourly × hours × 52. It does not include overtime, penalties, or salary sacrifice. For a general manager salary, you may have additional benefits like a car allowance or bonus, which are not included here.
Check our take-home pay page for a detailed breakdown, or see average pay for industry comparisons.
Important Disclaimer
Annual pay shown is hourly rate × hours per week × 52. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax is the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.
