Hotel Manager Salary: Converting Hourly Rates to Annual Pay for a 38-Hour Week
For a hotel manager under the Hospitality Award, the minimum annual salary is $63,617 based on a 38-hour week, but salary absorption may apply if paid at least 125% of that amount.
Understanding the Annual Pay Formula
Converting an hourly rate to an annual salary is straightforward: multiply the hourly rate by the number of hours worked per week, then by 52 weeks. For full-time employees under most awards, including the Hospitality Industry (General) Award 2020, the standard is 38 ordinary hours per week.
Formula: Annual gross ≈ hourly rate × 38 hours × 52 weeks.
For example, a hotel manager salary quoted at $35.00 per hour would be $35.00 × 38 × 52 = $69,160 per year. This calculation assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, and no allowances. It also excludes superannuation, which is paid on top.
To see the fortnightly equivalent, multiply the weekly amount by 2. Using the same example, weekly pay is $1,330.00, so fortnightly pay is $2,660.00 before tax.
Hotel Manager Salary Under the Hospitality Award
Hotel managers performing lower-level duties are covered by the Hospitality Industry (General) Award 2020. The award sets a minimum annual salary of $63,617 for Managerial Staff (Hotels) as of 1 July 2026. This is based on a 38-hour week.
However, clause 25 of the award allows for salary absorption. If the hotel manager is paid at least 125% of the minimum annual salary (i.e., $79,521.25), the employer can absorb penalty rates, overtime, allowances, and breaks into that salary. This means the manager does not receive those additional payments separately. The Fair Work Ombudsman notes that this requirement does not involve comparing the salary to what the employee would otherwise be paid under the award.
For a hotel manager earning above the absorption threshold, the annual salary is a fixed amount that covers all ordinary hours and additional work. To convert that annual salary back to an hourly rate, divide by 52 weeks and then by 38 hours. For example, $80,000 per year gives $80,000 ÷ 52 ÷ 38 ≈ $40.49 per hour.
National Minimum Wage and Award Rates
The National Minimum Wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour, or $1,004.90 per week for 38 hours. Casual employees receive a 25% loading, making the casual rate $33.05 per hour. However, hotel managers are classified under a different part of the award and are not paid at the minimum wage rate. The award provides specific minimum rates for various roles, but managerial staff have their own salary structure.
When comparing a hotel manager salary to other hospitality roles, remember that managers are typically salaried and may not receive penalty rates or overtime if salary absorption applies. The minimum wage page has more details on base rates.
Tax and Superannuation
Once you have the annual gross salary, you can estimate tax using the 2026–27 resident tax rates:
- Nil tax on the first $18,200
- 15% on income from $18,201 to $45,000
- 30% on income from $45,001 to $135,000
- 37% on income from $135,001 to $190,000
- 45% on income over $190,000
A Medicare levy of 2% generally applies (using 2025–26 single reduction thresholds as a guide). For a hotel manager earning $80,000, the tax estimate would be:
- $0 on first $18,200
- 15% on $26,800 ($18,201–$45,000) = $4,020
- 30% on $35,000 ($45,001–$80,000) = $10,500
- Total tax = $14,520
- Medicare levy (2% of $80,000) = $1,600
- Net income after tax and Medicare ≈ $63,880
Superannuation is paid on top of the salary. The super guarantee rate is 12% of ordinary earnings, up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830 (2026–27). For a $80,000 salary, the employer contributes an additional $9,600 per year. This is not deducted from your salary; it is an extra benefit. Learn more about super and packaging.
Using the Timesheet
Our timesheet tool lets you enter an hourly rate and see the annual, monthly, fortnightly, and weekly equivalents. A checkbox adds 25% casual loading on top of the base rate—do not enter a rate that already includes loading. The tool uses the same formula: hourly × hours per week × 52, with a default of 38 hours. You can adjust the hours if your role differs.
For hotel managers, the timesheet can help you check whether a salary offer matches the hourly equivalent of the award minimum. Remember that salary absorption may mean your annual salary already includes allowances and overtime, so the hourly rate derived from the salary may be lower than the award hourly rate for non-managerial staff.
For more detailed award rates, see our pay guides and reference tables. The average pay page provides broader industry benchmarks.
Disclaimer: Annual pay here is hourly rate × hours per week × 52. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax is the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.
