Understanding an Investment Banking Salary: Award Rates, National Minimum Wage, and Hourly Conversion
For a full-time employee under the Banking, Finance and Insurance Award, a Level 1 hourly rate of $26.97 works out to $53,284 per year based on 38 hours per week, with super and tax calculated on top.
Converting an Hourly Rate to an Annual Investment Banking Salary
When you see an hourly rate for a job in banking, finance or insurance, the first question is often: What does that mean as an annual salary? The answer is straightforward: multiply the hourly rate by the number of hours you work each week, then multiply by 52 weeks. For full-time employees under the Banking, Finance and Insurance Award 2020 (the award), the standard ordinary hours are 38 per week. So the formula is:
Annual gross salary = hourly rate × 38 × 52
For example, the award’s Level 1 minimum hourly rate from 1 July 2026 is $26.97. That gives $26.97 × 38 × 52 = $53,284 per year. If you are paid fortnightly, your gross pay would be the weekly rate ($1,024.70) multiplied by two, or $2,049.40 per fortnight.
Award Rates vs. the National Minimum Wage
The National Minimum Wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour, or $1,004.90 per week for 38 hours. However, the award sets higher minimums for the banking, finance and insurance industry. The award has six classification levels, each with its own minimum hourly rate:
| Classification | Hourly rate | Weekly rate | Annual salary (38 hours × 52 weeks) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Level 1 | $26.97 | $1,024.70 | $53,284 |
| Level 2 | $29.45 | $1,119.10 | $58,193 |
| Level 3 | $31.11 | $1,182.10 | $61,469 |
| Level 4 | $32.67 | $1,241.40 | $64,553 |
| Level 5 | $33.99 | $1,291.80 | $67,174 |
| Level 6 | $38.07 | $1,446.80 | $75,234 |
These are the minimum rates. Actual investment banking salaries are typically much higher, but the award provides the legal baseline. For more detail on how these rates apply, see the pay guides from the Fair Work Ombudsman.
Casual Loading and Superannuation
If you are a casual employee, you receive a 25% loading on top of the minimum hourly rate. For a Level 1 casual, that’s $26.97 × 1.25 = $33.71 per hour. This loading replaces entitlements like annual leave and sick leave. You can use the timesheet to calculate your pay with or without casual loading.
Superannuation is paid on top of your base salary. Under the Superannuation Guarantee, your employer must contribute 12% of your ordinary earnings (up to $270,830 per year) into a super fund. For a Level 1 employee earning $53,284, that’s an extra $6,394 per year. The super and packaging page explains how salary packaging can affect your take-home pay.
Tax on Your Investment Banking Salary
Once you have your annual gross salary, you can estimate your tax using the 2026–27 resident tax rates:
- Nil on the first $18,200
- 15% on income from $18,201 to $45,000
- 30% on income from $45,001 to $135,000
- 37% on income from $135,001 to $190,000
- 45% on income above $190,000
Plus a Medicare levy of 2% (with possible reductions for lower incomes). For a Level 1 salary of $53,284, the tax would be approximately $7,088 plus Medicare $1,066, leaving about $45,130 take-home pay (excluding HELP or Medicare levy surcharge). Use the take-home pay tool for a more personalised estimate.
How This Applies to Investment Banking
While the award rates above are the legal minimums, investment banking salaries in Australia are often significantly higher, especially for analysts and associates. The Australian Bureau of Statistics reports that full-time adult average weekly ordinary time earnings were $2,083.70 in May 2026, which equates to about $108,352 per year. Investment banking roles frequently exceed this average. However, the conversion method remains the same: hourly rate × hours per week × 52.
If you are comparing a salary offer, remember that the award also includes penalty rates for overtime, weekend work, and public holidays. For a full breakdown of penalty rates, see the reference tables on our site.
Important Notes on the Conversion
- The calculation assumes you work the same number of hours every week with no unpaid overtime.
- It does not include penalty rates, allowances, or salary sacrifice.
- Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base.
- Tax uses the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here.
- This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.
