Lebron James Salary vs Australian Pay: How to Convert Hourly Rates to Annual Income
Annual pay is calculated as hourly rate × hours per week × 52, assuming a 38-hour week for full-time employees.
From Hourly to Annual: The Lebron James Salary Connection
When you hear about the Lebron James salary — reported in the hundreds of millions — it’s easy to think that annual pay is only for superstars. But every Australian worker can convert their hourly rate into an annual figure using the same simple formula: hourly rate × hours per week × 52. This article explains how that works, what the law says about minimum pay, and how tax and super affect your take-home amount.
Whether you’re a full-time employee, a casual worker, or negotiating a salary offer, understanding this conversion helps you compare jobs and plan your finances. The hourly conversion page provides more detail on the maths.
The National Minimum Wage and Award Rates
From 1 July 2026, the National Minimum Wage (NMW) is $26.44 per hour, or $1,004.90 per week for a 38-hour week, according to the Fair Work Ombudsman. This is the legal minimum for employees not covered by an award or agreement. Most workers, however, are covered by a modern award, which sets higher minimum rates for specific industries and occupations. Award minimum wages increased by 4.75% from 1 July 2026.
For casual employees, the NMW includes a 25% casual loading, bringing the rate to $33.05 per hour. This loading compensates for not receiving paid leave entitlements. The minimum wage page has a full breakdown of current rates.
Casual Loading and Superannuation
If you work casually, your employer must pay the casual loading on top of the base rate. The timesheet on this site has a checkbox to add 25% casual loading automatically — never enter a rate that already includes loading.
Superannuation is paid on top of your gross salary. From 1 July 2026, the super guarantee is 12% of ordinary earnings, up to a maximum contribution base of $270,830 per year. For example, if your annual salary is $80,000, your employer contributes an extra $9,600 to your super fund. This amount is not included in your take-home pay but is a valuable part of your total compensation. Learn more on the super and packaging page.
Tax and the Medicare Levy
Your annual gross salary is the starting point for tax calculations. For the 2026–27 income year, resident tax rates are:
- $0 – $18,200: nil
- $18,201 – $45,000: 15% on the excess over $18,200
- $45,001 – $135,000: 30% on the excess over $45,000
- $135,001 – $190,000: 37% on the excess over $135,000
- $190,001 and above: 45% on the excess over $190,000
In addition, the Medicare levy is generally 2% of your taxable income. The take-home pay tool estimates your net pay after tax and Medicare, using the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds (as 2026–27 thresholds were not confirmed at the time of this tool’s update).
The Lebron James Salary Example
To put this in perspective, consider the Lebron James salary — reportedly over $100 million per year from his NBA contract and endorsements. If we convert that to an Australian hourly rate (assuming a 38-hour week, 52 weeks), it would be roughly $50,000 per hour. While that figure is far beyond typical wages, the calculation method is identical to what you would use for your own pay. The only difference is the tax bracket: Lebron James would be in the top 45% bracket, plus the Medicare levy.
This example shows that whether you earn the minimum wage or a superstar salary, the same principles apply: hourly rate × hours × weeks gives your annual gross, then tax and super are applied.
Fortnightly Pay and Budgeting
Many Australian employers pay fortnightly. Your fortnightly gross pay is simply your weekly pay multiplied by two. For a full-time worker on the NMW, that’s $2,009.80 before tax. Knowing your fortnightly amount helps with budgeting and comparing job offers. The pay guides page includes award-specific rates for different industries.
Important Disclaimer
Annual pay calculated here is an estimate: hourly rate × hours per week × 52. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax uses the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.
