From Hourly to Annual: How to Convert Your Pay (Even Lionel Messi's Salary)

Annual gross pay is your hourly rate multiplied by hours per week (assumed 38) times 52 weeks.

How to Convert Your Hourly Rate to Annual Pay (Even Lionel Messi's Salary)

Whether you're a footballer earning millions or a hospitality worker on the National Minimum Wage, the maths behind converting an hourly rate to an annual salary is the same. The formula is straightforward: annual gross pay = hourly rate × hours per week × 52 weeks. This assumes you work the same number of hours every week, with no unpaid overtime, penalty rates, or allowances. For most full-time employees, the standard week is 38 hours, as set by the Fair Work Act. That's the assumption we use on the timesheet unless you enter a different number.

Let's apply it to a hypothetical example. If Lionel Messi's salary were quoted as an hourly rate (unlikely, but bear with us), you could convert it the same way. For instance, $10,000 per hour for 38 hours a week gives an annual gross of $19,760,000. The principle holds for any rate.

The National Minimum Wage and Award Rates

From 1 July 2026, the National Minimum Wage is $26.44 per hour, or $1,004.90 per week for 38 hours, according to the Fair Work Commission. This is the base rate for adult employees not covered by an award or agreement. Most workers, however, are covered by an award that sets higher minimum rates. You can find your specific award rate using the pay guides from the Fair Work Ombudsman. Award rates vary by industry and classification, and they often include penalty rates for evenings, weekends, and public holidays.

For casual employees, the Fair Work Ombudsman explains that a 25% loading is applied on top of the base rate. So the casual minimum wage is $33.05 per hour ($26.44 × 1.25). This loading compensates for not receiving paid sick leave or annual leave. On the timesheet, you can check a box to add casual loading automatically.

From Hourly to Fortnightly and Annual

Many Australians are paid fortnightly. To find your fortnightly gross, simply multiply your weekly pay by two. Using the National Minimum Wage: $1,004.90 per week × 2 = $2,009.80 per fortnight. For a casual on $33.05 per hour working 38 hours a week, the fortnightly gross is $2,511.80 ($33.05 × 38 × 2).

Annual gross is then weekly pay × 52. For the minimum wage full-time worker: $1,004.90 × 52 = $52,254.80 per year. For the casual: $33.05 × 38 × 52 = $65,306.80 per year. Remember, these are before tax and super.

Tax and the Medicare Levy

Your annual gross is not what you take home. The Australian Taxation Office applies a progressive tax scale for residents in 2026–27:

  • Nil tax on the first $18,200
  • 15% on income from $18,201 to $45,000
  • 30% on income from $45,001 to $135,000
  • 37% on income from $135,001 to $190,000
  • 45% on income above $190,000

In addition, most residents pay the Medicare levy, which is 2% of your taxable income. There are reductions for low-income earners, but the thresholds for 2026–27 were not confirmed at the time of this estimate, so we use the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds. For a full breakdown of your estimated take-home pay, see our take-home pay page.

Let's calculate tax for the minimum wage worker earning $52,254.80:

  • Tax on first $18,200: $0
  • Tax on next $26,800 (up to $45,000): $26,800 × 15% = $4,020
  • Tax on remaining $7,254.80 (from $45,001 to $52,254.80): $7,254.80 × 30% = $2,176.44
  • Total tax: $6,196.44
  • Medicare levy: $52,254.80 × 2% = $1,045.10
  • Total deductions: $7,241.54
  • Net annual pay: $45,013.26

This is an estimate. It does not include the tax-free threshold if you have multiple jobs, HELP repayments, or the Medicare levy surcharge.

Superannuation: Paid on Top

Superannuation is not deducted from your gross pay; it is paid by your employer on top. The super guarantee is 12% of your ordinary time earnings, up to a maximum contribution base of $270,830 per year. For the minimum wage worker, the employer would contribute an additional $6,270.58 per year ($52,254.80 × 12%). For high earners like Lionel Messi (if he were an Australian employee), super would cap at $270,830 × 12% = $32,499.60 per year. Learn more about super and packaging.

Distinguishing Minimum Wage, Award Rates, and Casual Loading

It's important to know which rate applies to you:

  • National Minimum Wage: $26.44 per hour for award/agreement-free employees aged 21+.
  • Award rates: Higher minimums set by industry awards. Use the pay guides or the reference tables on this site.
  • Casual loading: 25% on top of the base rate. Never enter a rate that already includes casual loading; instead, use the checkbox on the timesheet to add it.

A Note on Estimates

The annual figure you see here is a simple multiplication: hourly rate × hours per week × 52. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax uses the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.

For a more precise calculation tailored to your situation, use the Pay and Conditions Tool from the Fair Work Ombudsman, and consult the Australian Taxation Office for tax advice.

Questions people ask next

Does the 38-hour week apply to all employees?

The 38-hour week is the standard for full-time employees under the National Employment Standards, but some awards or agreements may specify different hours. Always check your award or contract. Part-time and casual hours vary.

How is casual loading calculated?

Casual loading is 25% on top of the base hourly rate. For example, the National Minimum Wage of $26.44 becomes $33.05 per hour for casuals. This compensates for not receiving paid leave. Use the checkbox on the timesheet to add it automatically.

Is superannuation included in the annual figure?

No, super is paid on top of your gross pay. The super guarantee is 12% of your ordinary earnings, up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830. The annual figure shown is before super and tax.
