Understanding the Max Dowman Salary: Hourly to Annual Conversion and Tax

For a 38-hour week, the annual gross salary is hourly rate × 38 × 52. The national minimum wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour, or $1,004.90 per week.

What Is the Max Dowman Salary?

The term "max dowman salary" refers to the maximum annual gross pay you can expect from a given hourly rate, assuming a standard full-time working week. It is a useful benchmark for comparing job offers, negotiating pay, or planning your budget. On this site, we calculate it using the formula: hourly rate × hours per week × 52. For most full-time roles, we assume 38 hours per week, as set by the Fair Work Commission. This gives you a consistent annual figure that you can then use to estimate tax, Medicare, and superannuation.

Converting Hourly to Annual: The Formula

To find your annual gross salary, multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work each week, then by 52 weeks. If you work a standard 38-hour week, the calculation is:

Annual gross = hourly rate × 38 × 52

For example, if your hourly rate is $30.00, your annual gross would be $30.00 × 38 × 52 = $59,280. This is the figure before any deductions for tax, Medicare, or superannuation. The same formula applies whether you are on the national minimum wage, an award rate, or an enterprise agreement.

The Fortnightly View

Many employers pay fortnightly. Your fortnightly gross pay is simply your weekly pay multiplied by two. For a 38-hour week, weekly pay = hourly rate × 38, so fortnightly pay = hourly rate × 76. This can help you match your pay cycle to your budget.

National Minimum Wage and Award Rates

From 1 July 2026, the national minimum wage is $26.44 per hour, or $1,004.90 per week for 38 hours. This is the base rate for adult employees not covered by an award or agreement. Most employees, however, are covered by a modern award which sets higher minimum rates. The Fair Work Ombudsman provides pay guides for each award, updated annually. Award wages increased by 4.75% from 1 July 2026.

Casual Loading

Casual employees receive a 25% loading on top of the base hourly rate. For the national minimum wage, that means $33.05 per hour. When using the timesheet on this site, you can check a box to add casual loading. Never enter a rate that already includes casual loading – the tool adds it for you.

Tax and Medicare Levy on Your Annual Salary

Once you have your annual gross salary, you can estimate your take-home pay after tax and Medicare. The 2026–27 resident tax rates are:

  • Nil on the first $18,200
  • 15% on income from $18,201 to $45,000
  • 30% on income from $45,001 to $135,000
  • 37% on income from $135,001 to $190,000
  • 45% on income above $190,000

Medicare levy is generally 2% of taxable income. The 2025–26 single reduction thresholds are used here because the 2026–27 thresholds were not confirmed at the time of calculation. For a full breakdown of how tax affects your pay, see our take-home pay page.

Example: Max Dowman Salary at $26.44 per Hour

Using the max dowman salary approach, an employee on the national minimum wage working 38 hours per week earns:

  • Annual gross: $26.44 × 38 × 52 = $52,277.44
  • Tax (estimated): approximately $6,206 (including Medicare)
  • Net annual: around $46,071

This is a simplified estimate. Your actual tax may vary depending on deductions, HELP repayments, or the Medicare levy surcharge.

Superannuation: Paid on Top

Superannuation guarantee is 12% of your ordinary earnings, paid by your employer on top of your gross salary. The maximum contribution base for 2026–27 is $270,830. Super is not deducted from your pay; it is an additional cost to your employer. For more details, see super and packaging.

Using the Timesheet

The timesheet on this site lets you enter your base hourly rate and instantly see your annual, monthly, fortnightly, and weekly gross pay. A checkbox adds 25% casual loading. The results include an estimate of tax and Medicare based on the 2026–27 rates. Remember that this is an estimate only – it assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice.

Important Disclaimer

Annual pay here is hourly rate × hours per week × 52. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax is the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.

Questions people ask next

How do I convert my hourly rate to an annual salary?

Multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work per week, then by 52 weeks. For a standard full-time role of 38 hours per week, the formula is: hourly rate × 38 × 52. This gives your gross annual salary before tax and super. Remember that this assumes no unpaid overtime, penalty rates, or allowances.

What are the 2026-27 tax brackets and Medicare levy?

For residents, the tax-free threshold is $18,200. Then 15% applies up to $45,000, 30% up to $135,000, 37% up to $190,000, and 45% above that. The Medicare levy is generally 2% of taxable income. These rates are used in the max dowman salary calculation on this site.

How does casual loading affect my pay?

Casual employees are entitled to a 25% loading on top of the base hourly rate. For example, the national minimum wage of $26.44 per hour becomes $33.05 per hour with casual loading. This loading is included in your gross pay before tax and super. Never enter a rate that already includes casual loading into the timesheet.
