Mechanical Fitter Salary Guide: Hourly to Annual Pay for 38-Hour Weeks
A mechanical fitter under the Manufacturing Award (C10 classification) earns a minimum hourly rate above the National Minimum Wage of $26.44, with annual pay calculated as hourly × 38 × 52.
Understanding the mechanical fitter salary
If you are a mechanical fitter or considering a role in this trade, knowing how to convert an hourly rate into an annual salary is essential. The mechanical fitter salary depends on the award classification, your experience, and whether you work full-time, part-time, or casually. This guide uses the standard 38-hour week and a 52-week year to give you clear estimates.
Award coverage for mechanical fitters
Mechanical fitters in Australia are generally covered by the Manufacturing and Associated Industries and Occupations Award (MA000010). The most common classification is C10 – Engineering/manufacturing tradesperson level I. The Fair Work Ombudsman publishes updated pay guides each year after the Annual Wage Review. From 1 July 2026, award minimum wages increased by 4.75%. The National Minimum Wage also rose to $26.44 per hour, but award rates for skilled trades like mechanical fitting are higher.
To find the exact minimum rate for a mechanical fitter, refer to the pay guides on the Fair Work Ombudsman website. The Manufacturing Award pay guide lists all classification rates, including penalty rates and allowances.
The formula: hourly to annual
Annual gross pay = hourly rate × hours per week × 52. For a full-time mechanical fitter, we assume 38 ordinary hours per week (the standard under the National Employment Standards and most awards).
Example: If your hourly rate is $30.00 per hour:
- Weekly: $30.00 × 38 = $1,140.00
- Fortnightly: $1,140.00 × 2 = $2,280.00
- Annual: $30.00 × 38 × 52 = **$59,280.00
This is the gross annual figure before tax and before super. The same formula works for any hourly rate. If you are a casual mechanical fitter, you add 25% casual loading on top of the base rate. Do not include the loading in the base rate you enter into a calculator; the loading is applied separately.
Casual loading and superannuation
Casual employees under the Manufacturing Award receive a 25% casual loading on the ordinary hourly rate. For the example above, the casual rate would be $37.50 per hour. This loading compensates for not receiving paid leave.
Superannuation is paid on top of your gross earnings. From 1 July 2026, the super guarantee is 12% of ordinary earnings, up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830 per year. For a full-time mechanical fitter earning $59,280, super would be $59,280 × 12% = $7,113.60 per year, paid by the employer on top of your salary.
Tax and Medicare levy
Your take-home pay depends on the 2026–27 resident tax rates:
- Nil tax on the first $18,200
- 15% on income from $18,201 to $45,000
- 30% on income from $45,001 to $135,000
- 37% on income from $135,001 to $190,000
- 45% on income above $190,000
Plus the Medicare levy of 2% (based on 2025–26 single reduction thresholds). For a mechanical fitter earning $59,280, the estimated tax is approximately $7,000–$8,000, and Medicare about $1,185. Use the take-home pay tool for a personalised estimate.
Comparing the mechanical fitter salary with averages
The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) Average Weekly Earnings for May 2026 show full-time adult ordinary time earnings of $2,083.70 per week, or about $108,352 per year. This is higher than a typical mechanical fitter award rate, reflecting many roles above the minimum. However, the award minimum provides a solid baseline. For more context, see the average pay page.
Fortnightly pay and budgeting
Many employers pay fortnightly. Your fortnightly gross is simply weekly pay × 2. For a $30 per hour mechanical fitter: $1,140 × 2 = $2,280. After tax and Medicare, your fortnightly take-home might be around $1,900–$2,000 depending on your tax withholding. This helps with budgeting rent, bills, and savings.
Key distinctions
- National Minimum Wage: $26.44 per hour (from 1 July 2026). This is the legal floor for award-free employees. Mechanical fitters under an award earn more.
- Award rate: The Manufacturing Award minimum for a C10 tradesperson is higher than the NMW. Check the minimum wage page for comparisons.
- Casual loading: 25% on top of the base rate, not included in the base.
- Super: 12% paid on top of ordinary earnings, not deducted from your pay.
Using the timesheet calculator
Our timesheet lets you enter your base hourly rate and optionally add casual loading. It then shows your weekly, fortnightly and annual gross pay. It does not include penalty rates or allowances. For a mechanical fitter working standard hours, it gives a clear picture of your regular earnings.
Summary
A mechanical fitter salary is straightforward to estimate: hourly rate × 38 × 52. Remember to add super on top and deduct tax and Medicare for your net pay. Always check the latest pay guide from the Fair Work Ombudsman for your exact classification. For more details on salary packaging and super, visit super and packaging.
