Understanding the Median Australian Salary and How to Calculate Your Annual Pay
Based on a 38-hour week and 52 weeks per year, the median Australian salary for all employees is approximately $74,672 per year ($1,436 per week).
How to Convert Your Hourly Rate to Annual Pay
When you're offered an hourly rate or a salary, it helps to see the bigger picture. The standard method is to multiply your hourly rate by the hours you work each week, then by 52 weeks. For full-time employees, the typical week is 38 ordinary hours, as set by the Fair Work Commission. This gives you a gross annual figure before tax and super.
For example, if your base rate is $30 per hour, the calculation is:
$30 × 38 hours × 52 weeks = $59,280 per year.
If you work part-time or irregular hours, adjust the weekly hours accordingly. The same formula works for any hourly rate.
The Median Australian Salary
When people ask about the median australian salary, they are referring to the midpoint of all employee earnings. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the median weekly earnings for all employees in May 2025 were $1,436. That translates to an annual income of about $74,672 using the 52-week year. This figure includes both full-time and part-time workers, so it's a useful benchmark for the typical earner.
It's important to distinguish the median from the average. The average weekly earnings for all employees (including part-time) were $1,579.20 per the on-site reference, while full-time adult ordinary time earnings averaged $2,083.70 per week. The median is lower because it isn't pulled up by high earners.
National Minimum Wage and Award Rates
The Fair Work Commission sets the National Minimum Wage each year. From 1 July 2026, the rate is $26.44 per hour, or $1,004.90 for a 38-hour week. This is the legal floor for award/agreement-free adult employees. Many industries have award rates that are higher, so always check your specific award or agreement. You can use the Fair Work Ombudsman's Pay Calculator to find your minimum pay rate.
Casual Loading
Casual employees are entitled to a 25% loading on top of the base rate to compensate for not receiving paid leave. If you enter a base hourly rate into a calculator, do not include the loading in that rate. Instead, apply the 25% separately. For the National Minimum Wage, the casual rate becomes $33.05 per hour. This loading is paid on top of ordinary hours and is subject to superannuation.
The Fortnightly View
Many employers pay fortnightly. To find your gross fortnightly pay, simply multiply your weekly pay by two. Using the median weekly earnings of $1,436, a fortnightly gross would be $2,872. This can help you budget and compare with salary offers that are quoted per fortnight.
Superannuation Guarantee
Super is paid on top of your ordinary earnings. The super guarantee rate is 12% of your ordinary time earnings, up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830 per year. For an employee earning $59,280 per year, the employer would contribute an additional $7,113.60 into super. This is not deducted from your pay; it's an extra cost to the employer.
Tax and Take-Home Pay
Your annual gross pay is subject to income tax and the Medicare levy. For the 2026–27 financial year, the resident tax rates are:
- $0 – $18,200: nil
- $18,201 – $45,000: 15c for each $1 over $18,200
- $45,001 – $135,000: $4,020 plus 30c for each $1 over $45,000
- $135,001 – $190,000: $31,020 plus 37c for each $1 over $135,000
- $190,001 and over: $51,370 plus 45c for each $1 over $190,000
Medicare levy is generally 2% of taxable income. The low-income thresholds for Medicare reduction are based on 2025–26 figures as the 2026–27 thresholds were not confirmed. This estimate does not include HELP repayments, the Medicare levy surcharge, or salary packaging.
Important Disclaimer
The annual pay shown here is hourly rate × hours per week × 52. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax uses the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.
