Minimum Salary for 482 Visa: Converting Hourly Rates to Annual Pay in Australia

Annual pay is calculated as hourly rate × hours per week × 52, assuming a standard 38-hour week. The National Minimum Wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour, or $1,004.90 per week.

Converting Hourly Pay to Annual Pay

If you have an hourly rate or a salary offer and want to understand your annual, fortnightly, or weekly earnings, the basic formula is straightforward: annual gross pay = hourly rate × hours per week × 52. This article explains how that works, what the National Minimum Wage and award rates mean, and how the minimum salary for 482 visa fits in.

We assume a standard full-time week of 38 hours unless stated otherwise. Your fortnightly pay is simply your weekly pay multiplied by 2 – a common pay cycle in Australia.

The Formula in Practice

For a full-time employee working 38 hours per week:

  • Weekly pay = hourly rate × 38
  • Fortnightly pay = weekly pay × 2
  • Annual gross = hourly rate × 38 × 52

For example, at the National Minimum Wage of $26.44 per hour (from 1 July 2026, as per the Fair Work Ombudsman ):

  • Weekly: $26.44 × 38 = $1,004.72 (rounded to $1,004.90 in official figures)
  • Fortnightly: $2,009.44
  • Annual: $26.44 × 38 × 52 = $52,245.44

If you are a casual employee, a 25% casual loading is typically added on top of the base rate. For the National Minimum Wage, that gives a casual rate of $33.05 per hour. Never include casual loading in the base hourly rate you enter – our calculator adds it separately when you select the casual option.

National Minimum Wage vs Award Rates

The National Minimum Wage applies to employees not covered by an award or agreement. However, most industries have a modern award that sets higher minimum pay rates, penalty rates, and allowances. From 1 July 2026, award minimum wages increased by 4.75%.

Award rates vary by classification and industry. For example, a hospitality worker may have a different minimum hourly rate than a retail employee. Always check the relevant pay guide on the Fair Work Ombudsman website to find your correct classification.

Casual Loading

Casual employees receive a loading (usually 25%) instead of paid leave entitlements. This loading is paid on top of the base hourly rate. For award-covered casuals, the loading is often included in the award rate itself. Our calculator lets you toggle casual loading on and off – it adds 25% to the base rate you enter.

Minimum Salary for 482 Visa

The minimum salary for 482 visa is set by the Department of Home Affairs through the Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold (TSMIT). This is the minimum annual salary that a sponsor must pay a worker on the Temporary Skill Shortage (482) visa. The TSMIT is updated periodically and is generally higher than the National Minimum Wage. For the current figure, refer to the Home Affairs salary requirements page.

In addition to the TSMIT, the sponsor must meet the Fair Work Act obligations. As outlined in the Fair Work Ombudsman fact sheet, the employer must provide equivalent pay to an Australian employee in the same workplace, pay at least the award rate if applicable, and comply with the National Employment Standards (NES). This means the actual minimum salary may be higher than the TSMIT if the award rate is higher.

What the TSMIT Means for Your Calculation

If you are on a 482 visa, your annual salary must meet or exceed the TSMIT. To convert your hourly rate to annual pay and check against the threshold:

  • Use the formula: hourly rate × hours per week × 52.
  • For a standard 38-hour week, multiply your hourly rate by 1,976 (38 × 52).
  • Compare the result to the current TSMIT.

Remember that superannuation (at 12% of ordinary earnings) is paid on top of your salary and does not count towards the TSMIT. The TSMIT is a cash salary requirement.

Tax and Super Considerations

Once you have your annual gross figure, you can estimate your take-home pay using the 2026–27 resident tax rates:

  • Nil tax on the first $18,200
  • 15% on income from $18,201 to $45,000
  • 30% on income from $45,001 to $135,000
  • 37% on income from $135,001 to $190,000
  • 45% on income above $190,000

Plus the Medicare levy of 2% (based on 2025–26 single reduction thresholds as 2026–27 thresholds were not confirmed).

Superannuation is an additional 12% of your ordinary earnings, paid by your employer on top of your salary. The super guarantee has a maximum contribution base of $270,830 per year. Super is not deducted from your pay – it is an extra benefit.

Important Disclaimer

Annual pay shown here is hourly rate × hours per week × 52. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax uses the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.

Using Our Calculator

Our timesheet lets you enter your base hourly rate and optionally add casual loading. It then calculates your weekly, fortnightly, and annual pay, along with estimated tax and super. For award-specific rates, refer to our pay guides or minimum wage page. If you need to check the minimum salary for 482 visa, compare your calculated annual figure against the current TSMIT from Home Affairs.

Whether you are an employee checking your offer or an employer ensuring compliance, understanding the conversion from hourly to annual is essential. Use the formula, check the relevant award, and always verify against official sources.

Questions people ask next

How do I convert my hourly rate to an annual salary?

Multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work per week, then multiply by 52. For a standard 38-hour week, annual = hourly × 38 × 52. For example, $30/hour × 38 × 52 = $59,280 per year. If you work different hours, adjust the weekly hours accordingly. Your fortnightly pay is simply your weekly pay multiplied by 2.

What is the minimum salary for a 482 visa?

The Department of Home Affairs sets a Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold (TSMIT) which is the minimum annual salary for sponsored workers on the Temporary Skill Shortage (482) visa. This threshold is updated periodically. For the current figure, refer to the Home Affairs website. Your employer must also meet any applicable award or enterprise agreement rates, which may be higher than the TSMIT.

Does casual loading affect the minimum salary for 482 visa?

Casual loading (typically 25% on top of the base rate) is paid instead of leave entitlements such as annual and sick leave. The 482 visa requires the sponsor to provide equivalent pay to an Australian employee in the same occupation. If the occupation is typically casual, the loading may be included in the total remuneration. However, the TSMIT is a minimum annual salary threshold that must be met regardless of loading. Always check the specific sponsor obligations with the Fair Work Ombudsman.
