Understanding the Minimum Wage in the USA vs Australia: Hourly to Annual Pay, Casual Loading, and Super

Based on a 38-hour week, the National Minimum Wage of $26.44 per hour gives an annual gross of $52,260, with super of 12% paid on top.

Converting Hourly to Annual Pay in Australia

Whether you're negotiating a salary or comparing job offers, understanding how your hourly rate translates to annual pay is essential. In Australia, the standard full-time working week is 38 hours, and the formula is straightforward: annual gross pay = hourly rate × hours per week × 52. This calculation assumes you work the same hours every week with no unpaid overtime, penalty rates, or allowances.

While the minimum wage in the USA varies by state and is set at a federal level of US$7.25 per hour (as of 2026), Australia's system is different. Here, the Fair Work Commission sets a National Minimum Wage that applies to all employees not covered by an award or agreement. As of 1 July 2026, that rate is $26.44 per hour or $1,004.90 per week for a 38-hour week. Most employees, however, are covered by an award that may set higher minimum rates.

The 38-Hour Week and Fortnightly Pay

Australia's standard full-time week is 38 ordinary hours. When converting hourly to annual, always use 38 hours unless you work a different pattern. Many employers pay fortnightly, so you can also calculate: fortnightly gross = hourly rate × 38 × 2. For the National Minimum Wage, that's $26.44 × 76 = $2,009.80 per fortnight before tax.

If you're on an award, check the pay guides for your specific classification. Awards often have higher minimum rates than the National Minimum Wage, and they include penalty rates for evenings, weekends, and public holidays.

Casual Loading and Superannuation Paid on Top

Casual employees receive a 25% loading on top of the base hourly rate to compensate for not receiving paid sick leave or annual leave. This loading is added before you calculate annual pay. For example, a casual on the National Minimum Wage earns $26.44 × 1.25 = $33.05 per hour. The casual loading page explains how this works across different awards.

Superannuation (super) is an additional 12% of your ordinary time earnings that your employer must pay into your super fund. It is not part of your salary – it's paid on top. The maximum contribution base for the super guarantee is $270,830 per year (2026–27). So if your annual ordinary earnings exceed that, the 12% only applies up to that cap.

Tax and Medicare

Your take-home pay depends on tax and the Medicare levy. For the 2026–27 financial year, the resident tax rates are:

  • Nil on the first $18,200
  • 15% on income between $18,201 and $45,000
  • 30% on income between $45,001 and $135,000
  • 37% on income between $135,001 and $190,000
  • 45% on income above $190,000

Plus the Medicare levy of 2% (with reductions for low-income earners). The take-home pay tool on this site estimates your net pay after tax and Medicare, but does not include HELP repayments, the Medicare levy surcharge, or salary packaging.

Using the Timesheet

To convert your hourly rate to annual, fortnightly, and weekly figures, use the timesheet. Enter your base hourly rate – do not include casual loading in the rate you type. If you are a casual employee, check the box to add 25% casual loading, and the calculator will apply it automatically. The results show your gross annual pay (based on 38 hours per week, 52 weeks), your fortnightly pay, and estimated tax and super.

Remember that the annual figure is an estimate. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax uses the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed at the time of calculation.

Award Rates vs National Minimum Wage

While the National Minimum Wage is a safety net, most employees are covered by an award that sets higher minimum rates. For example, the Hospitality Industry General Award might have a higher base rate for a cook than the National Minimum Wage. Always check your award using the Fair Work Ombudsman's Pay and Conditions Tool or the reference tables on this site. If you are covered by an enterprise agreement, that agreement's rates apply instead.

Questions people ask next

What is the current National Minimum Wage in Australia?

As of 1 July 2026, the National Minimum Wage is $26.44 per hour or $1,004.90 per week for a 38-hour week. This applies to employees not covered by an award or registered agreement. Casual employees receive a 25% loading, making the casual minimum $33.05 per hour.

How does casual loading affect my hourly rate and annual pay?

Casual loading is an extra 25% on top of the base hourly rate to compensate for lack of paid leave. For example, a $30 base rate becomes $37.50 per hour as a casual. When converting to annual pay, use the loaded rate in the formula: hourly rate × hours per week × 52. The timesheet on this site includes a checkbox to add casual loading automatically.

Is superannuation included in my annual salary figure?

No, superannuation is paid on top of your ordinary earnings. The employer must contribute 12% of your ordinary time earnings (up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830) into your super fund. When you see an annual salary, it typically does not include super; the super is additional.
