Minimum Wage Increase 2026 Australia: How to Convert Your Hourly Rate to Annual Pay
For a full-time employee working 38 hours per week, the National Minimum Wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour, which equates to $1,004.90 per week and an annual gross of approximately $52,255 before tax and super.
Understanding the Minimum Wage Increase 2026 Australia
The Fair Work Commission has set the National Minimum Wage at $26.44 per hour from 1 July 2026. This is the base rate for adult employees not covered by an award or agreement. For a full-time worker on 38 hours per week, the weekly minimum is $1,004.90. Casual employees receive a 25% loading on top, bringing their minimum to $33.05 per hour. This increase is part of the annual review process and affects many award rates as well.
How to Calculate Annual Pay from Hourly Rate
The standard formula to convert an hourly rate to annual gross pay is:
Hourly rate × hours per week × 52 weeks
We assume a 38-hour week for full-time work, as this is the ordinary hours under the Fair Work Act. For example, at the new minimum wage:
- $26.44 × 38 = $1,004.90 per week
- $1,004.90 × 52 = $52,254.80 per year (rounded to $52,255)
If you work a different number of hours, adjust the formula accordingly. You can also calculate your fortnightly pay by multiplying your weekly pay by 2. For the minimum wage, that is $2,009.80 per fortnight.
Use our the timesheet to enter your base hourly rate and instantly see your annual, weekly, and fortnightly figures. Remember to enter your base rate without casual loading – if you are casual, tick the checkbox to add 25% on top.
Tax and Medicare Levy on Your Annual Pay
Once you have your gross annual figure, you need to estimate tax and the Medicare levy. For the 2026–27 financial year, the resident tax rates are:
- Nil up to $18,200; 15% from $18,201 to $45,000; 30% from $45,001 to $135,000; 37% from $135,001 to $190,000; 45% above $190,000. The Medicare levy is generally 2% of your taxable income. The tax-free threshold is $18,200. For a minimum wage earner earning $52,255, the tax estimate uses the 2026–27 scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.
For a single resident with no dependents, the approximate tax on $52,255 would be:
- Taxable income: $52,255
- Tax on first $18,200: $0
- Tax on $18,201 to $45,000: ($45,000 - $18,200) × 15% = $4,020
- Tax on $45,001 to $52,255: ($52,255 - $45,000) × 30% = $2,176.50
- Total tax: $4,020 + $2,176.50 = $6,196.50
- Medicare levy: $52,255 × 2% = $1,045.10
- Total tax and Medicare: $7,241.60
- Net annual pay: $52,255 - $7,241.60 = $45,013.40

Superannuation Paid on Top
Super guarantee is 12% of your ordinary earnings, paid by your employer on top of your salary. It does not come out of your pay. For the minimum wage example:
- Super contribution: $52,255 × 12% = $6,270.60
- Total cost to employer: $52,255 + $6,270.60 = $58,525.60
The super guarantee only applies up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830. If your annual earnings exceed that, super is capped. For most workers, super is a valuable addition to your retirement savings. Learn more about super and packaging.
Casual Loading and Award Rates
If you are a casual employee, you are entitled to a 25% loading on top of the base hourly rate. This compensates for not receiving paid leave. For the minimum wage, the casual rate is $26.44 × 1.25 = $33.05 per hour. When using our the timesheet tool, enter your base rate (e.g., $26.44) and check the casual loading box – the tool will add 25% automatically. Never enter a rate that already includes casual loading.
Award rates are often higher than the National Minimum Wage. The Fair Work Ombudsman sets minimum wages for specific industries and occupations. Check your award or agreement to see if a higher rate applies. Our minimum wage page has more details on the national minimum and award rates.
Using Our Timesheet Tool
Our the timesheet is the home page calculator. You type your base hourly rate in the field. A checkbox adds 25% casual loading on top. Always enter the base rate without casual loading. The tool then calculates your annual, weekly, fortnightly, and monthly figures. It also estimates tax and super. It uses the formula hourly × hours per week × 52. It assumes 38 hours per week. It uses the 2026–27 resident tax scale with Medicare levy. It does not include HELP, MLS, or salary packaging. The result is an estimate.
Remember that annual pay here is hourly rate × hours per week × 52. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax is the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.
