Minimum Wage Sydney: Converting Hourly Rates to Annual Salary and Fortnightly Pay
At the National Minimum Wage of $26.44 per hour for a 38-hour week, annual gross is about $52,245, with fortnightly pay of $2,009.80 before tax and super.
Understanding Hourly to Annual Conversions for Minimum Wage Sydney
If you're paid by the hour or considering a salary offer, the first step is converting your hourly rate to an annual figure. The standard formula is straightforward: hourly rate × hours per week × 52. For full-time work, Fair Work Ombudsman typically assumes 38 hours per week, so the calculation becomes: hourly rate × 38 × 52. This gives you the gross annual salary before tax, Medicare, and super.
For example, the minimum wage Sydney workers receive under the National Minimum Wage is $26.44 per hour from 1 July 2026. That works out to $26.44 × 38 × 52 = $52,245.44 per year. If you're a casual employee, the 25% casual loading brings the rate to $33.05 per hour, or $65,306.80 annually. These figures are set by the Fair Work Commission and apply across Australia, not just Sydney.
Why 38 Hours and What About Fortnightly Pay?
Most full-time awards and the National Employment Standards define full-time as 38 hours per week. Using 38 hours gives a consistent baseline. If you work different hours, adjust the formula accordingly. For fortnightly pay, simply multiply your weekly gross by 2. For the minimum wage Sydney example: $1,004.90 per week × 2 = $2,009.80 per fortnight before tax and super. This is helpful for budgeting if you're paid fortnightly.
National Minimum Wage vs. Award Rates
The National Minimum Wage is the legal floor. However, many jobs in Sydney are covered by an award or enterprise agreement that sets higher minimum rates. For instance, the Hospitality Industry General Award or the Retail Award may have higher hourly rates for specific classifications. Always check your applicable award via the pay guides on this site. The National Minimum Wage applies to employees not covered by any award or agreement. If you're in a job covered by an award, your minimum hourly rate is likely higher than $26.44.
Casual Loading and Superannuation
Casual employees receive a 25% loading on top of the base hourly rate to compensate for lack of paid leave. This loading is included in the casual rate shown above. When using our timesheet, never enter a rate that already includes casual loading; instead, enter the base rate and tick the casual loading checkbox. The tool adds 25% automatically.
Superannuation Guarantee is paid on top of your ordinary earnings. From 1 July 2026, the rate is 12% of your ordinary time earnings, up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830 per year. For a minimum wage Sydney worker earning $52,245, the employer contributes an additional $6,269.40 to super. This is not deducted from your pay; it's an extra benefit. See our super and packaging page for more details.
Tax Estimates for 2026–27
Tax is withheld from your pay based on the Australian Taxation Office's resident tax scales. For 2026–27, the tax-free threshold is $18,200. Income from $18,201 to $45,000 is taxed at 15%, $45,001 to $135,000 at 30%, $135,001 to $190,000 at 37%, and above $190,000 at 45%. The Medicare levy is generally 2% of taxable income, with reductions for low-income earners using the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds (as 2026–27 thresholds were not confirmed in this estimate).
For a minimum wage Sydney worker earning $52,245, estimated tax (including Medicare) would be roughly $6,797, leaving a take-home pay of about $45,448 per year, or $874 per week. This is an estimate only; use our take-home pay tool for a personalised calculation.
Important Assumptions and Limitations
This conversion assumes you work the same hours every week, with no unpaid overtime, penalty rates, allowances, or salary sacrifice. It also assumes you're a resident for tax purposes and claim the full tax-free threshold. HELP repayments, Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not included. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Always consult a tax professional for your specific situation.
Average Earnings vs. Your Job
The Australian Bureau of Statistics reports average weekly earnings. For May 2026, full-time adult ordinary time earnings averaged $2,083.70 per week, or about $108,352 per year. All employees total earnings averaged $1,579.20 per week (including part-time). These are averages, not medians for a specific job. Your pay may differ based on industry, experience, and location. For job-specific pay data, refer to your award or industry benchmarks.
