Understanding Your Monash Salary: Casual Loading and Super Paid on Top
For a full-time employee on the National Minimum Wage ($26.44/hr), the annual gross is $52,270 based on 38 hours per week for 52 weeks.
Converting Your Hourly Rate to Annual Pay
Whether you're checking a job offer or planning your budget, converting an hourly rate to an annual salary is straightforward. The standard formula is:
Annual gross = hourly rate × hours per week × 52
This article assumes a 38-hour week (the ordinary full-time hours under most awards and the National Employment Standards). If you work different hours, adjust the calculation accordingly. For a quick estimate, use the timesheet to enter your base hourly rate and toggle casual loading.
National Minimum Wage and Award Rates
From 1 July 2026, the National Minimum Wage (NMW) is $26.44 per hour or $1004.90 per week for 38 hours, as set by the Fair Work Commission. This is the minimum for award/agreement-free employees. Most workers are covered by an award or enterprise agreement that sets higher rates.
For example, the Health Services Award and the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award have specific classifications and pay rates. The Fair Work Ombudsman publishes pay guides for each award, including minimum rates, allowances, and penalty rates.
Enterprise Agreements: The Monash Salary Example
Many large employers, including universities, have enterprise agreements that override award rates. The Monash salary structure is a good example. Monash University publishes its staff salary rates for academic, professional, sessional, and casual staff under its enterprise agreements. These rates are typically higher than the relevant award minimums. For instance, a casual professional employee at Monash may receive a base rate plus 25% casual loading, and super is paid on top of that total. You can view the current Monash salary rates on their enterprise agreements page.
When comparing a Monash salary offer to an award rate, remember that enterprise agreements can include additional benefits like higher super contributions or leave provisions. Always check the specific agreement that applies to your role.
Casual Loading: 25% on Top
Casual employees receive a 25% loading on their base hourly rate to compensate for not receiving paid leave (annual, sick, personal). This loading is paid on top of the base rate, not included in it. For example:
- Base rate: $30.00/hr
- Casual loading (25%): $7.50/hr
- Casual rate: $37.50/hr
Superannuation is then calculated on the $37.50/hr ordinary earnings. Never enter a rate that already includes casual loading into a calculator; always use the base rate and add the loading separately. Our casual loading page explains this in detail.
Superannuation: Paid on Top
The super guarantee rate is 12% from 1 July 2026, applied to your ordinary time earnings. This means super is paid on top of your gross pay, not deducted from it. For a casual employee earning $37.50/hr (including loading), super adds an extra $4.50/hr, making the total employment cost $42.00/hr. The maximum contribution base for super is $270,830 per year (2026–27). Earnings above that cap do not attract compulsory super. See our super and packaging page for more.
Fortnightly and Weekly Breakdown
Knowing your fortnightly pay can help with budgeting. Simply multiply your weekly gross by 2. For a full-time employee on the NMW:
- Weekly: $1004.90
- Fortnightly: $2009.80
- Annual: $52,254.80 (using $26.44 × 38 × 52)
If you earn above the NMW, use the same formula. For a Monash salary example, say a professional staff member earns $35.00/hr base. Their annual would be $35 × 38 × 52 = $69,160. With casual loading, it becomes $43.75/hr, annual $86,450. Super at 12% adds $10,374 on top.
Tax and Take-Home Pay
Tax is calculated on your gross annual salary using the 2026–27 resident tax rates:
- $0–$18,200: nil
- $18,201–$45,000: 15c for each $1 over $18,200
- $45,001–$135,000: $4,020 plus 30c for each $1 over $45,000
- $135,001–$190,000: $31,020 plus 37c for each $1 over $135,000
- $190,001+: $51,402 plus 45c for each $1 over $190,000
Plus Medicare levy of 2% (with reductions for low incomes). Use our take-home pay estimator for a personalised calculation. Note that HELP repayments, Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not included here.
Summary
To convert your hourly rate to annual pay:
- Multiply hourly rate by hours per week (usually 38).
- Multiply by 52 weeks.
- If casual, add 25% loading to the hourly rate first.
- Super is paid on top at 12%.
- Deduct tax and Medicare for an estimate of take-home pay.
For award-specific rates, refer to the pay guides from the Fair Work Ombudsman. For enterprise agreements like the Monash salary, check your employer's agreement. Always use the base hourly rate (without loading) when entering data into calculators.
Open the same rate on the home timesheet. Read the reference tables before treating a figure as your pay.
