From Hourly Rate to Annual Salary: Understanding Your Pay, Tax, and Super — Including Nathan Cleary Salary Context

For a standard 38-hour week, annual gross pay equals hourly rate × 38 × 52; the National Minimum Wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour, or $1,004.90 per week.

Understanding the Hourly to Annual Conversion

Whether you're negotiating a new job offer or checking your current pay, converting an hourly rate to an annual salary is a fundamental skill. The standard formula is straightforward: hourly rate × hours per week × 52. This gives your gross annual pay — the amount before tax, Medicare levy, and any other deductions.

The Standard 38-Hour Week

In Australia, the full-time ordinary hours for most awards are 38 per week. When we talk about annual salary from an hourly rate, we assume 38 hours unless stated otherwise. For example, the National Minimum Wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour, which equates to $1,004.90 per week (38 hours) and an annual gross of $52,254.80. This is the legal minimum for award-free employees aged 21 and over.

If you work part-time or casual, your hours may vary. The formula still applies: just use your actual weekly hours. For a quick estimate, use the timesheet on our home page — type your base hourly rate and it will calculate weekly, fortnightly, and annual figures.

Fortnightly Pay

Many employers pay fortnightly. To find your fortnightly gross, simply multiply your weekly pay by two. Using the minimum wage example: $1,004.90 per week × 2 = $2,009.80 per fortnight. This is useful for budgeting and comparing with salary offers that are quoted fortnightly.

National Minimum Wage vs Award Rates

Australia has a complex system of minimum wages. The National Minimum Wage applies to employees not covered by an award or agreement. However, most industries have modern awards that set higher minimum rates for specific roles. For example, the Children’s Services Award and Pharmacy Award recently received increases due to gender-based undervaluation reviews.

Award rates are published by the Fair Work Commission in the Modern Awards Pay Database. These rates include minimum hourly pay, allowances, penalty rates, and overtime. If you're covered by an award, your minimum pay is likely higher than the National Minimum Wage.

Casual Loading

Casual employees receive a 25% loading on top of the base hourly rate to compensate for not receiving paid sick leave or annual leave. The casual National Minimum Wage from 1 July 2026 is $33.05 per hour. When using our casual loading tool, check the box to add the loading — never enter a rate that already includes it, as that would double-count.

Superannuation and Tax

Your gross annual salary is not what you take home. Two major deductions are tax and the Medicare levy. Additionally, superannuation is paid on top of your salary by your employer.

Tax Brackets for 2026–27

For residents, the 2026–27 tax rates are:

  • Nil on income up to $18,200
  • 15% on income from $18,201 to $45,000
  • 30% on income from $45,001 to $135,000
  • 37% on income from $135,001 to $190,000
  • 45% on income above $190,000

Plus a Medicare levy of 2% (with possible reductions for low-income earners). Use our take-home pay calculator to estimate your net pay after tax and Medicare.

Superannuation Guarantee is 12% of your ordinary earnings, paid by your employer into a super fund. This is on top of your salary, not deducted from it. The maximum contribution base is $270,830 for 2026–27, so super stops accruing once your earnings exceed that amount. Learn more about super and packaging.

Comparing Ordinary-Time Earnings

Ordinary-time earnings refer to pay for standard hours, excluding overtime, bonuses, and allowances. The Australian Bureau of Statistics reports Average Weekly Earnings (AWE) for full-time adult ordinary time as $2,083.70 per week (May 2026). That's an annual equivalent of about $108,352.40. All employees total earnings (including part-time) average $1,579.20 per week, or $82,118.40 annually.

These figures help you benchmark your pay. If your hourly rate is $26.44 (minimum wage), you're well below the average. If you earn $50 per hour, your annual gross is $98,800 — close to the full-time average.

Nathan Cleary Salary Context

When discussing high earnings, the Nathan Cleary salary often comes up as a benchmark in Australian sport. While precise figures are not publicly confirmed, his contract with the Penrith Panthers is widely reported to be among the highest in the NRL. For context, a salary of, say, $1 million per year equates to an hourly rate of approximately $506 for a 38-hour week (ignoring game-day bonuses and endorsements). This illustrates the vast difference between ordinary-time earnings for most workers and top-tier athletes. Our average pay page provides more comparisons.

Questions people ask next

How do I convert my hourly rate to an annual salary?

Multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work per week, then by 52. For a full-time employee working 38 hours per week, the formula is: hourly rate × 38 × 52. This gives your gross annual pay before tax and super. Remember that super is paid on top of this amount, not deducted from it.

What is the casual loading and how does it affect my pay?

Casual loading is an extra 25% paid on top of the base hourly rate to compensate for not receiving paid leave. For example, the National Minimum Wage for casuals from 1 July 2026 is $33.05 per hour (base $26.44 plus 25% loading). When using our timesheet, check the casual loading box to add this automatically — never type a rate that already includes the loading.

How does superannuation work with my salary?

Superannuation Guarantee requires your employer to pay 12% of your ordinary earnings into a super fund, on top of your salary. This is not deducted from your pay. The maximum contribution base for 2026–27 is $270,830, meaning super is capped at 12% of that amount. For most workers, super adds significantly to your total remuneration package.
