Hourly to Annual Pay: How Your Salary Compares to the NBA Salary Cap
For a 38-hour week, your annual gross pay is your hourly rate multiplied by 1,976 hours (38 × 52).
From Hourly to Annual: Understanding Your Pay
Whether you're negotiating a salary, budgeting for the year, or just curious how your hourly wage translates to a yearly figure, converting your pay is straightforward. The basic formula is:
Annual gross pay = hourly rate × hours per week × 52 weeks
For a standard full-time week of 38 hours, that means multiplying your hourly rate by 1,976 (38 × 52). This gives you the gross amount before tax, super, and any deductions.
Why 38 Hours?
The 38-hour week is the standard ordinary hours for full-time employees under many awards and the National Minimum Wage. The Fair Work Commission sets the National Minimum Wage based on a 38-hour week. If you work part-time or casual, your weekly hours may differ, so adjust accordingly.
The Fortnightly View
Many Australians are paid fortnightly. To find your fortnightly gross pay, simply multiply your weekly pay by 2. For example, at the National Minimum Wage of $26.44 per hour for 38 hours, your weekly pay is $1,004.90, so your fortnightly pay is $2,009.80. This can help with budgeting and comparing to salary offers.
Minimum Wage, Award Rates, and Casual Loading
Australia has a complex pay system. The National Minimum Wage is the baseline for award/agreement-free employees. However, most workers are covered by an award or enterprise agreement that sets higher minimum rates. The Fair Work Ombudsman provides pay guides for each award, which include minimum pay rates, allowances, and penalty rates.
Casual loading is an extra 25% on top of the base rate for casual employees, compensating for lack of paid leave. For example, the casual National Minimum Wage is $33.05 per hour. When using our timesheet, you can check the casual loading box to add 25% to your base rate. Never enter a rate that already includes casual loading; always start with the base hourly rate.
Superannuation Is Paid on Top
Your employer must pay superannuation guarantee contributions of 12% of your ordinary earnings, on top of your gross pay. This is not deducted from your salary. The maximum contribution base for the 2026–27 year is $270,830. So if your annual pay exceeds that, super is capped. For most workers, super adds a significant boost to your total remuneration.
Tax and Take-Home Pay
Your annual gross pay is not what you take home. The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) applies progressive tax rates for residents in 2026–27:
- Nil on the first $18,200
- 15% on income from $18,201 to $45,000
- 30% on income from $45,001 to $135,000
- 37% on income from $135,001 to $190,000
- 45% on income above $190,000
Plus, the Medicare levy of 2% generally applies. Our take-home pay calculator estimates your net pay after tax and Medicare, using the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds (as 2026–27 thresholds were not confirmed).
How Does Your Pay Compare?
To put your annual salary in perspective, consider the NBA salary cap for the 2026–27 season. While the exact figure fluctuates, it's in the range of $150–$160 million USD per team. That's a far cry from the average Australian full-time adult ordinary time earnings of $2,083.70 per week (ABS May 2026), which equates to about $108,352 per year. Our average pay page has more details.
Your own annual pay, calculated from your hourly rate, might be closer to the National Minimum Wage ($52,254 per year) or above the average if you're in a high-paying industry. Use our reference tables to see how different hourly rates translate to annual, fortnightly, and weekly figures.
Important Disclaimer
Annual pay here is hourly rate × hours per week × 52. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax is the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.
Using the Hourly to Annual Calculator
Our timesheet is the home page. Simply enter your base hourly rate, and we'll show your annual, fortnightly, and weekly gross pay. If you're a casual, check the casual loading box to add 25% on top. The calculator uses the 38-hour week assumption but you can adjust hours if needed. For award-specific rates, refer to the pay guides from the Fair Work Ombudsman.
