NRLW Salary Cap and Your Pay: How to Convert Hourly Rates to Annual, Fortnightly, and More
For a 38-hour week over 52 weeks, annual gross pay is your hourly rate multiplied by 1976 hours.
From Hourly Rate to Annual Pay: The 38-Hour Week, Fortnight, and 52-Week Year
Whether you are comparing a job offer, budgeting, or just curious, understanding how your hourly rate translates into annual, fortnightly, and weekly pay is essential. In Australia, most full-time employees work a 38-hour week, and the standard year is 52 weeks. This article explains the conversion, the role of the National Minimum Wage, award rates, casual loading, and superannuation – and touches on how the NRLW salary cap fits into the broader pay landscape.
The Basic Formula
The core calculation is straightforward: annual gross pay = hourly rate × hours per week × 52. For a 38-hour week, that is hourly rate × 1976. For example, at the National Minimum Wage of $26.44 per hour, annual pay is $26.44 × 1976 = $52,245.44 before tax. If you work a different number of hours per week, adjust accordingly. The same formula works for fortnightly pay: hourly rate × hours per week × 2. So a fortnight at 38 hours per week is 76 hours, giving $26.44 × 76 = $2,009.44.
The National Minimum Wage vs Award Rates
From 1 July 2026, the National Minimum Wage is $26.44 per hour or $1,004.90 per week for 38 hours. This is the legal floor for award-free employees. However, most workers are covered by a modern award or enterprise agreement that sets higher minimum rates for their industry or role. The Fair Work Ombudsman provides pay guides for each award. Always check your award first – the National Minimum Wage is only a safety net.
Casual Loading
Casual employees receive a 25% loading on top of the base rate to compensate for not receiving paid leave. For the National Minimum Wage, that means $33.05 per hour. When using our timesheet, you can check a box to add casual loading automatically. Never enter a rate that already includes casual loading – the tool adds it for you.
Superannuation Is Paid on Top
Superannuation guarantee is 12% of your ordinary earnings, paid by your employer on top of your gross pay. It is not deducted from your hourly rate. For 2026–27, the maximum contribution base is $270,830 per year. So if your annual pay exceeds that, super only applies up to that cap. For most workers, super adds a significant boost to your total remuneration.
Tax and Medicare
Your take-home pay depends on tax. The 2026–27 resident tax rates are: nil on the first $18,200, 15% on earnings up to $45,000, 30% up to $135,000, 37% up to $190,000, and 45% above that. Medicare levy is generally 2% of taxable income. These are deducted from your gross pay. The calculator on this site uses these rates with the full tax-free threshold.
The NRLW Salary Cap in Context
The NRLW salary cap sets a maximum total player payments for women's rugby league teams. While that cap is a specific figure negotiated between the league and the players' union, it illustrates how different industries set pay ceilings. For most Australian workers, pay is determined by awards, agreements, or the National Minimum Wage – not a cap. The NRLW salary cap is a useful reminder that pay structures vary widely, but the hourly-to-annual conversion remains the same.
Fortnightly Pay
Many employers pay fortnightly. To find your fortnightly gross pay, multiply your weekly pay by two. For a 38-hour week at the National Minimum Wage, that is $2,009.44. If you are casual, it is $2,511.80. This is handy for budgeting.
Important Assumptions
This conversion assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax uses the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.
