Psychologist Salary Australia: Award Rates vs National Minimum Wage

A full-time psychologist under the Health Professionals and Support Services Award earns at least $32.44 per hour (Level 1, 1st year), or $64,088 annually based on 38 hours per week.

Understanding Psychologist Salary Australia

When researching psychologist salary Australia, it helps to start with the legal minimums set by the Fair Work Commission and the Fair Work Ombudsman. Psychologists are typically covered by the Health Professionals and Support Services Award 2020, which sets minimum hourly rates well above the National Minimum Wage. This page explains how to convert those rates into annual, fortnightly, and take-home pay, including superannuation and tax.

The Conversion Formula

Annual gross pay is calculated as:

hourly rate × hours per week × 52

We assume 38 ordinary hours per week for full-time employees, as defined in the award. For part-time or casual workers, adjust the weekly hours accordingly. The fortnightly amount is simply the weekly pay multiplied by 2.

For example, a psychologist at the Health Professional Level 1, first year, earns $32.44 per hour. Their annual salary would be:

$32.44 × 38 × 52 = $64,088.64

This is the gross amount before tax and Medicare, and before super is added on top.

Award Rates vs National Minimum Wage

The National Minimum Wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour, or $1,004.90 per week for 38 hours. However, award-covered employees – including most psychologists – must be paid at least the rate in their award. The Health Professionals Award provides a minimum of $32.44 per hour for entry-level psychologists (AQF Level 5, first year), rising to $40.56 per hour after seven years. More senior classifications (Level 2, 3, 4) have higher rates still.

If you are not covered by an award or agreement, the National Minimum Wage applies. But for psychologists, the award rate is the floor. You can check the full classification table in our reference tables.

Casual Loading

Casual employees receive a 25% loading on top of the minimum hourly rate. For a Level 1 first-year psychologist, the casual rate is $32.44 × 1.25 = $40.55 per hour. This loading compensates for the lack of paid leave and other entitlements. When using our the timesheet calculator, enter the base hourly rate (without loading) and tick the casual checkbox – the system adds the 25% automatically.

Superannuation Paid on Top

Superannuation is not deducted from your salary; it is paid on top by your employer. From 1 July 2026, the super guarantee is 12% of your ordinary time earnings, up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830 per year. For a psychologist earning $64,088, the employer would contribute an additional $7,690.56 per year into a super fund. This is separate from your take-home pay. Learn more about super and packaging.

Tax and Take-Home Pay

Income tax for 2026–27 uses the resident tax-free threshold:

  • $0 – $18,200: nil
  • $18,201 – $45,000: 15%
  • $45,001 – $135,000: 30%
  • $135,001 – $190,000: 37%
  • $190,001+: 45%

Plus the Medicare levy of 2% (based on 2025–26 single reduction thresholds, as 2026–27 thresholds were not confirmed). Using the example of $64,088 annual gross:

  • Tax: ($64,088 – $18,200) × 0.15? No – the first $18,200 is tax-free, then 15% on the next $26,800 (up to $45k), then 30% on the remainder? Actually, the bracket $18,201–$45,000 is 15% on the amount over $18,200. So tax = ($45,000 – $18,200) × 0.15 = $4,020; then for the remaining $19,088 ($64,088 – $45,000) at 30% = $5,726.40, total tax = $9,746.40. Medicare levy 2% on $64,088 = $1,281.76. Total deductions ~$11,028. Take-home pay ~$53,060 per year, or about $1,020 per week.

Fortnightly Pay

If paid fortnightly, divide the annual gross by 26. For $64,088, that’s $2,464.92 per fortnight before tax. After tax and Medicare, approximately $2,040 per fortnight.

Important Notes

  • The formula assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice.
  • Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base.
  • Tax uses the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 thresholds were not confirmed here.
  • HELP, Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted.

This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax. For accurate figures, consult your employer, a tax professional, or the pay guides from the Fair Work Ombudsman.

Average Psychologist Salary

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (May 2026), full-time adult average weekly ordinary time earnings were $2,083.70 per week, or about $108,352 per year. Psychologist salaries vary by experience, location, and sector. The award minimums provide a floor, but many psychologists earn above award through enterprise agreements or private practice. Questions people ask next

How do I calculate my annual salary from an hourly rate as a psychologist?

Multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work each week, then multiply by 52. For a full-time psychologist working 38 ordinary hours per week, the formula is: hourly rate × 38 × 52. For example, $32.44 × 38 × 52 = $64,088 per year. This assumes the same rate every week with no unpaid overtime, penalty rates, or allowances. Use our [hourly conversion](/topics/hourly-conversion) tool to try different hours.

What is the minimum award rate for a psychologist in Australia?

Psychologists are covered by the Health Professionals and Support Services Award 2020. Minimum hourly rates depend on the classification and experience. For a Health Professional Level 1 with an AQF Level 5 qualification, the rate is $32.44 per hour in the first year, rising to $40.56 per hour after seven years. These rates are higher than the National Minimum Wage of $26.44 per hour. See the full classification table in our [reference tables](/data).

Does the casual loading apply to psychologists, and how is it calculated?

Yes, casual psychologists receive a 25% loading on top of the minimum hourly rate. For a Level 1 first-year psychologist, the casual rate is $32.44 × 1.25 = $40.55 per hour. The loading is paid instead of entitlements like paid leave. When calculating annual pay for a casual, use the loaded rate in the formula. Our [casual loading](/topics/casual-loading) page explains more. Never enter a rate that already includes casual loading into the timesheet – use the base rate and tick the casual box.
