Understanding the Qantas Pilot Salary: Hourly Rates, Casual Loading, and Super
For a Qantas pilot earning an hourly rate, the annual salary is calculated by multiplying the hourly rate by 38 hours per week and 52 weeks, with super paid on top.
Converting a Qantas Pilot Salary to Annual Pay
When you hear about a Qantas pilot salary, it is often quoted as an annual figure. But if you are paid by the hour, or you want to compare a job offer, you need to convert that hourly rate to a yearly amount. The standard formula is simple: multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work each week, then multiply by 52 weeks. For most full-time pilots, the ordinary hours are 38 per week under the Air Pilots Award. That means your annual gross salary is roughly:
Hourly rate × 38 hours × 52 weeks
For example, a captain flying an Airbus A320 on $65.65 per hour (the minimum rate under the award for that aircraft) would earn about $129,788 per year before tax and super. If you are paid fortnightly, that is $4,991 per fortnight (weekly pay × 2).
Award Rates vs Enterprise Agreements
The Fair Work Ombudsman’s Air Pilots Award [MA000046] sets minimum pay rates for pilots. The award includes specific hourly rates for different aircraft types. For instance, a captain on a single-engine aircraft under 1360 kg earns at least $29.47 per hour, while a multi-engine aircraft over 5660 kg attracts $37.63 per hour. These are the legal minimums. Qantas pilots, however, are usually covered by enterprise agreements that offer higher pay, often well above the award. The award rates serve as a baseline, and your actual Qantas pilot salary may be significantly more.
Casual Loading and Superannuation
If you work as a casual pilot, you are entitled to a 25% loading on top of your hourly rate. This loading compensates for the lack of paid leave and other entitlements. For example, a casual pilot on the A320 rate of $65.65 per hour would receive $82.06 per hour (including loading). The loading is applied to the hourly rate derived from the annual salary, not on top of a rate that already includes loading. Our timesheet lets you check a box to add the 25% casual loading automatically.
Superannuation is paid on top of your ordinary earnings. From 1 July 2026, the super guarantee is 12% of your ordinary time earnings, up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830 per year. So if your annual salary is $129,788, your employer would contribute an extra $15,574.56 to your super fund. This is not deducted from your pay; it is an additional benefit.
Comparing to Other Benchmarks
The National Minimum Wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour, or $1,004.90 per week for 38 hours. A casual worker on the minimum wage gets $33.05 per hour including the 25% loading. The Australian Bureau of Statistics reports that full-time adult average weekly ordinary time earnings are $2,083.70 (May 2026). A Qantas pilot earning the award rate for an A320 captain is well above that average. However, remember that the award rates are minimums; actual Qantas pilot salaries are often higher due to enterprise agreements and allowances.
Tax and Take-Home Pay
Once you have your annual gross salary, you can estimate your tax using the 2026–27 resident tax rates. The first $18,200 is tax-free, then 15% up to $45,000, 30% up to $135,000, 37% up to $190,000, and 45% above that. The Medicare levy is generally 2% of your taxable income. For a gross salary of $129,788, your tax would be approximately $30,167 plus Medicare of $2,596, leaving a take-home pay of about $97,025 per year. Our take-home pay tool can help you estimate your net income.
Using the Timesheet
Our timesheet is designed for anyone who wants to convert an hourly rate to annual, fortnightly, or weekly pay. You enter your base hourly rate, and if you are casual, tick the box for 25% loading. The calculator then shows your gross annual salary, super contribution, and estimated tax. It assumes a 38-hour week and no unpaid overtime or penalty rates. For a Qantas pilot salary, this gives you a quick comparison against award rates or enterprise agreement offers.
Important Notes
The annual pay shown is an estimate. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax uses the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.
