Understanding the Qantas Pilots Salary 2026: Award Rates, Tax, and Super
For a full-time Qantas A320 Captain, the award hourly rate is $65.65 based on a 38-hour week, yielding an annual salary of about $129,766 before tax and super.
Qantas Pilots Salary 2026: Award Rates and How They Work
If you're looking up the qantas pilots salary 2026, the starting point is the Fair Work Commission's Air Pilots Award 2020 (MA000046). This award covers all airline pilots, including those at Qantas, and sets minimum annual salaries for each aircraft type and role. Unlike many occupations where hourly rates are directly stated, pilot pay is expressed as an annual salary, with hourly rates derived from that figure.
How to Convert Pilot Annual Salary to Hourly Rate
For full-time and part-time pilots, the award defines ordinary hours as an average of 38 per week. To get the hourly rate, divide the annual salary by 52 (weeks) and then by 38 (hours). For example, a Captain flying an Airbus A320 has an annual salary (including mandatory additions) that works out to $65.65 per hour according to the Fair Work Ombudsman's pay guide. That means:
- Weekly rate: $65.65 × 38 = $2,494.70
- Fortnightly rate: $2,494.70 × 2 = $4,989.40
- Annual gross: $65.65 × 38 × 52 = $129,766.40
This formula is the same one used by our hourly conversion tool. Always remember that award rates are minimums; many Qantas pilots earn above these figures through enterprise agreements, but the award provides the legal floor.
Casual Pilots and Loading
Casual pilots are paid per flying hour using a different formula: 1/800th of the annual salary (including additions), then plus 25% casual loading. For the A320 Captain example, the casual hourly rate before loading is about $100.93, and after loading it becomes $126.16. This loading replaces entitlements like annual leave and sick pay. You can learn more about how loading works on our casual loading page.
Comparing Pilot Pay to National Benchmarks
The National Minimum Wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour for a 38-hour week, or $1,004.90 per week. Even the lowest pilot classification – a single-engine aircraft Captain under 1,360 kg – earns $29.47 per hour, above the minimum. The ABS Average Weekly Earnings for full-time adults (May 2026) is $2,083.70 per week, so a Qantas A320 Captain at $2,494.70 per week is well above that average.
Tax on Pilot Salaries
For the 2026–27 income year, resident tax rates apply:
- $0–$18,200: nil
- $18,201–$45,000: 15%
- $45,001–$135,000: 30%
- $135,001–$190,000: 37%
- Over $190,000: 45%
Plus a Medicare levy of 2% (generally). For a pilot earning $129,766, the tax would be approximately:
- $0 on first $18,200
- 15% on $26,800 ($4,020)
- 30% on $84,766 ($25,429.80)
- Total tax: $29,449.80
- Medicare levy: $2,595.32
- Net income: about $97,720.88

Superannuation on Top
Employers must pay super guarantee at 12% of ordinary earnings, on top of the salary, up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830 (2026–27). For our A320 Captain, that's an extra $15,571.97 per year contributed to a fund like AustralianSuper, as specified in the award. This is not deducted from the salary – it's paid in addition. See our super and packaging page for more.
Using the Award Pay Guide
The Fair Work Ombudsman publishes a pay guide for the Air Pilots Award that lists hourly rates for each aircraft category. For example, a Dash 8 100 Captain (15,650 kg MTOW) earns $47.41 per hour, while a Boeing 737-400 Captain earns $65.65 per hour – the same as the A320. The guide also covers allowances, penalty rates, and overtime. You can find these on our pay guides page.
Fortnightly Pay and Budgeting
Many pilots are paid fortnightly. For the A320 Captain, that's $4,989.40 before tax. After tax and Medicare, the fortnightly take-home is roughly $3,758.50. Knowing this helps with budgeting and comparing job offers.
Important Disclaimer
Annual pay here is hourly rate × hours per week × 52. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax is the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.
