From the Roosters Salary Cap Breach to Your Pay: Understanding Hourly to Annual Conversion

Based on a 38-hour week, annual gross pay is hourly rate × 38 × 52, with super paid on top.

Why the Roosters Salary Cap Breach Matters for Your Pay

Even the roosters salary cap breach – a high-profile case of a sports club exceeding player payment limits – shows how easily pay calculations can go wrong. For everyday workers, getting your hourly-to-annual conversion right is just as critical. Whether you’re negotiating a salary offer or checking your award rate, understanding the numbers helps you avoid underpayment.

The Basic Formula: Hourly × Hours × 52

The standard way to estimate annual gross pay is:

Annual gross = hourly rate × hours per week × 52

This assumes you work the same hours every week with no unpaid overtime, penalty rates, or allowances. For full-time employees, the typical week is 38 hours – the maximum ordinary hours under the National Employment Standards. If you work part-time or casual, use your usual weekly hours.

Example: National Minimum Wage

From 1 July 2026, the National Minimum Wage is $26.44 per hour. For a 38-hour week:

  • Annual gross: $26.44 × 38 × 52 = $52,245.44
  • Fortnightly gross: $26.44 × 38 × 2 = $2,009.44 (or weekly × 2)

This is the minimum for award-free employees. Most workers are covered by a modern award with higher rates.

Award Rates vs National Minimum Wage

Awards set minimum pay for specific industries. From 1 July 2026, award wages increased by 4.75%. For example, a retail employee might earn $28.50 per hour under their award – above the National Minimum Wage. Always check the correct pay guide using our pay guides page or the Fair Work Ombudsman’s Pay and Conditions Tool.

Casual Loading

Casual employees get a 25% loading on top of the base rate. For the National Minimum Wage:

  • Casual rate: $26.44 + 25% = $33.05 per hour
  • Annual gross (38 hours): $33.05 × 38 × 52 = $65,306.80

Our calculator has a checkbox for casual loading. Never enter a rate that already includes casual loading – the tool adds it for you. See our casual loading guide for more.

Fortnightly Pay and Budgeting

Many employers pay fortnightly. To get your fortnightly gross, multiply your weekly pay by 2:

  • Weekly pay = hourly rate × hours per week
  • Fortnightly pay = weekly pay × 2

Using the National Minimum Wage: $26.44 × 38 = $1,004.72 per week; $2,009.44 per fortnight. This matches the Fair Work Ombudsman’s weekly figure of $1,004.90 (slight rounding difference).

Tax and Super: What Comes Off (and On)

Income Tax (2026–27 Resident Rates)

  • Nil on first $18,200
  • 15% on income from $18,201 to $45,000
  • 30% on income from $45,001 to $135,000
  • 37% on income from $135,001 to $190,000
  • 45% on income above $190,000

Plus the Medicare levy of 2% (with reductions for low-income earners). Our take-home pay page gives a detailed breakdown.

Superannuation Guarantee

Employers must pay super of 12% on top of your ordinary earnings, up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830 per year. For the National Minimum Wage example:

  • Annual super: 12% × $52,245.44 = $6,269.45 (paid into your super fund, not deducted from your pay)

Super is calculated on ordinary time earnings – overtime and some allowances may not be included. Learn more on our super and packaging page.

Putting It All Together

Let’s compare the National Minimum Wage with an award rate using the 2026 figures.

Component National Minimum Wage Example Award Rate
Base hourly $26.44 $30.00
Casual loading (25%) $33.05 $37.50
Annual gross (38h week) $52,245.44 $59,280.00
Fortnightly gross $2,009.44 $2,280.00
Estimated tax + Medicare ~$7,600 ~$9,200
Annual super (12%) $6,269.45 $7,113.60

Tax estimates are rough; use the ATO’s tax calculator for precise figures.

Why the Roosters Salary Cap Breach Is a Reminder

The roosters salary cap breach involved a club exceeding the allowed player payments – a clear case of getting pay calculations wrong. For individuals, mistakes in hourly-to-annual conversion can lead to underpayment or unrealistic salary expectations. Always verify your rate against the relevant award or the National Minimum Wage using our reference tables.

Important Disclaimer

Annual pay here is hourly rate × hours per week × 52. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax is the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.

Questions people ask next

How does casual loading affect my hourly rate?

Casual loading is an extra 25% on top of the base hourly rate to compensate for not receiving paid leave. For example, the National Minimum Wage of $26.44 per hour becomes $33.05 per hour for casuals. When using our calculator, tick the casual loading checkbox and enter your base rate (without loading) – the tool adds the 25% automatically.

What is the difference between the National Minimum Wage and award rates?

The National Minimum Wage ($26.44 per hour from 1 July 2026) is the legal minimum for employees not covered by an award or agreement. Award rates are higher minimums set for specific industries and occupations. From 1 July 2026, award wages increased by 4.75%. Always check the relevant award via the Fair Work Ombudsman’s pay guides to ensure you’re paid correctly.

How do I convert my hourly rate to an annual salary?

Multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work per week, then by 52. For a standard 38-hour week, the formula is: hourly rate × 38 × 52. This gives your gross annual pay before tax and super. Remember that super (currently 12%) is paid on top of this amount, not deducted from it.
