Salary Packaging and Hourly to Annual Pay: Understanding Your Earnings Across States

Your annual gross pay is your hourly rate multiplied by 1,976 hours (38 hours × 52 weeks), assuming consistent weekly hours.

Converting Your Hourly Rate to Annual Pay

When you have an hourly rate or a salary offer, understanding your annual equivalent is essential for budgeting, budgeting for tax, super, and salary packaging. The standard formula is straightforward: multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work each week, then by 52 weeks. For most full-time employees, the typical week is 38 hours, as set by the Fair Work Commission. So, annual gross pay = hourly rate × 38 × 52. This gives you 1,976 hours per year.

The National Minimum Wage and Award Rates

The Fair Work Ombudsman sets the National Minimum Wage, which from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour, or $1,004.90 per week for 38 hours. If you are a casual employee, you receive a 25% casual loading on top, making the minimum casual rate $33.05 per hour. However, many workers are covered by award rates that are higher than the minimum. Awards are industry- or occupation-specific and include minimum pay rates, penalty rates, and allowances. Our timesheet calculator lets you enter your base hourly rate; if you are casual, check the box to add the 25% loading. Never type a rate that already includes casual loading.

Fortnightly Pay and Superannuation

Many employers pay fortnightly. To find your gross fortnightly pay, multiply your weekly pay by 2. For example, if your weekly pay is $1,000, your fortnightly gross is $2,000. Superannuation is paid on top of your ordinary earnings at the super guarantee rate of 12% (from 1 July 2026). Super is not deducted from your pay; it is an additional contribution by your employer. The maximum contribution base is $270,830 per year. Our super and packaging page explains how salary packaging can interact with super.

State Differences in Ordinary-Time Earnings

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) publishes Average Weekly Earnings (AWE) data. As of May 2026, the national average for full-time adult ordinary-time earnings is $2,083.70 per week. For all employees (including part-time), the average is $1,579.20 per week. These figures are national averages; actual earnings vary significantly by state and territory. For instance, states with a strong mining sector, such as Western Australia, tend to have higher average ordinary-time earnings than states like Tasmania. However, our calculator uses a single hourly rate input. If you want a more tailored estimate, you can adjust your rate based on your industry and location. For state-specific averages, refer to the ABS data. Remember, these are averages, not medians for your specific job. Our average pay page provides more context.

Tax and Medicare

Tax is calculated using the 2026–27 resident tax rates: nil on the first $18,200, then 15% up to $45,000, 30% up to $135,000, 37% up to $190,000, and 45% above that. The Medicare levy is generally 2% of your taxable income. Our calculator uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds for Medicare because the 2026–27 thresholds were not confirmed at the time of this guide. Note that HELP repayments, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted in our estimate. Salary packaging can reduce your taxable income, potentially lowering your tax and Medicare levy. For more on this, see our take-home pay guide.

How Salary Packaging Fits In

Salary packaging (also called salary sacrifice) allows you to use pre-tax income to pay for certain benefits, such as a car, laptop, or additional super contributions. This reduces your assessable income, which can lower your tax. However, our calculator does not account for salary packaging. It estimates your annual pay and tax based on your gross hourly rate without any sacrifices. If you salary package, your actual take-home pay may be higher than the estimate. Important Disclaimer

Annual pay here is hourly rate × hours per week × 52. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax is the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax. For personalised advice, consult a qualified professional.

Questions people ask next

How do I convert my hourly wage to an annual salary?

Multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work per week, then by 52 weeks. For a standard full-time role of 38 hours per week, the formula is hourly × 38 × 52. This gives your gross annual pay before tax, super, and other deductions. Remember that this assumes no unpaid overtime, penalty rates, or allowances.

What is salary packaging and how does it affect my pay?

Salary packaging (also called salary sacrifice) allows you to use pre-tax income to pay for certain benefits like a car, laptop, or additional super contributions. This reduces your taxable income, potentially lowering your tax bill. However, our calculator does not account for salary packaging; it estimates tax based on your gross pay without any sacrifices.

How do state differences in ordinary-time earnings affect my conversion?

The Australian Bureau of Statistics publishes average weekly earnings for full-time adults, which vary by state due to industry mix and economic conditions. For example, states with a strong mining sector often have higher average ordinary-time earnings. Our calculator uses a national average reference, but you can adjust your hourly rate to reflect your specific role and location. For state-specific data, consult the ABS.
