Annual Pay from Hourly Rate: Salary Packaging and Meal Entertainment Card Considerations

Based on a 38-hour week, your annual gross pay is your hourly rate multiplied by 38 hours per week and 52 weeks per year.

Converting Your Hourly Rate to Annual Pay

When you have an hourly rate or a salary offer, understanding the annual equivalent helps you compare jobs and plan your finances. The standard formula in Australia is simple: multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work each week, then by 52 weeks in a year. For full-time employees, we assume a 38-hour week, as set by the Fair Work Commission.

The Formula and Assumptions

Annual gross pay ≈ hourly rate × hours per week × 52

If you work 38 hours per week, your annual gross is hourly × 38 × 52. For example, the National Minimum Wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour, giving an annual gross of $26.44 × 38 × 52 = $52,261.44 (rounded). This matches the Fair Work Ombudsman's weekly figure of $1,004.90 for 38 hours.

Remember: this calculation assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. It's an estimate, not a binding determination.

National Minimum Wage, Award Rates, and Casual Loading

The National Minimum Wage applies to employees not covered by an award or agreement. Award rates are higher for many industries and occupations. Casual employees receive a 25% casual loading on top of the base rate. For the minimum wage, that's $33.05 per hour casual.

Our the timesheet lets you enter your base hourly rate. There's a checkbox to add 25% casual loading. Never type a rate that already includes casual loading – the tool adds it for you.

Award Rates and Enterprise Agreements

Many employees are covered by modern awards or enterprise agreements that set minimum pay rates above the National Minimum Wage. For example, the Hospitality Industry General Award has different rates for various classifications. To find the correct award for your job, refer to pay guides on our site or the Fair Work Ombudsman website. Our reference tables also list common award classifications.

Fortnightly Pay and Budgeting

Many employers pay fortnightly. Your fortnightly gross is simply your weekly pay multiplied by two. Using the minimum wage: $1,004.90 per week × 2 = $2,009.80 per fortnight. This can help you budget between paydays. If you work 38 hours at $30/hour, your fortnightly gross is $30 × 38 × 2 = $2,280.

Tax and Superannuation

Tax is calculated on your annual gross using the 2026–27 resident tax rates:

  • Nil on the first $18,200
  • 15% on income between $18,201 and $45,000
  • 30% on income between $45,001 and $135,000
  • 37% on income between $135,001 and $190,000
  • 45% on income above $190,000

Plus the Medicare levy of 2% (based on 2025–26 single reduction thresholds as 2026–27 thresholds were not confirmed here).

Superannuation Guarantee is 12% of your ordinary earnings, paid on top of your salary. The maximum contribution base is $270,830 per year. For example, on a $60,000 salary, your employer adds $7,200 super. Super is not part of your gross salary; it's additional.

Our take-home pay page provides more detail, but remember: this estimate does not deduct HELP repayments, the Medicare levy surcharge, or salary packaging.

Salary Packaging and Meal Entertainment Card

Salary packaging (also called salary sacrifice) lets you exchange part of your pre-tax salary for benefits such as a car, laptop, or a meal entertainment card. A meal entertainment card allows you to pay for meals and entertainment with pre-tax dollars, reducing your taxable income. This can increase your take-home pay, but it's not included in our basic estimate. Always check with your employer or a tax professional to see if salary packaging and meal entertainment card options are available to you. For more, see super and packaging.

State Differences in Ordinary-Time Earnings

The Australian Bureau of Statistics publishes Average Weekly Earnings (AWE) for full-time adult ordinary time. The May 2026 national average was $2,083.70 per week. However, this figure masks differences between states and territories. For example, earnings in Western Australia are often higher due to the mining industry, while Tasmania tends to be lower. The all-employees average (including part-time) was $1,579.20 per week nationally. If you want state-specific data, consult the ABS directly. Our average pay page discusses national averages, but remember these are averages, not medians for your specific job.

Questions people ask next

How do I convert my hourly rate to annual salary?

Multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work each week (typically 38 for full-time) and then by 52 weeks. For example, $30/hour × 38 × 52 = $59,280 gross per year. This formula assumes consistent hours and no overtime or allowances.

What is casual loading and how does it affect my annual pay?

Casual loading is an extra 25% on top of the base hourly rate for casual employees, as set by the Fair Work Ombudsman. Our timesheet has a checkbox to add this loading. Never enter a rate that already includes casual loading – the tool calculates it for you.

How does salary packaging and meal entertainment card affect my take-home pay?

Salary packaging allows you to sacrifice part of your pre-tax salary for benefits like a meal entertainment card, reducing your taxable income and increasing take-home pay. Our estimate does not deduct salary packaging; consult your employer or a tax professional for personalised advice.
