Salary Packaging for Teachers: Converting Hourly Rates to Annual Pay with Casual Loading and Super
Annual gross pay is calculated by multiplying your hourly rate by hours per week (usually 38) and then by 52 weeks, with super paid on top.
From Hourly to Annual: A Practical Guide
Understanding how your hourly rate translates into annual pay is essential whether you're negotiating a salary, comparing job offers, or planning your finances. For teachers and other professionals, this conversion becomes even more relevant when considering salary packaging for teachers, casual loading, and superannuation.
The Basic Formula
The standard formula is straightforward: annual gross pay ≈ hourly rate × hours per week × 52 weeks. Most full-time roles in Australia assume a 38-hour week, as set by the Fair Work Ombudsman. If you work a different number of hours, simply substitute that figure. For a fortnightly amount, multiply your weekly pay by 2.
For example, a teacher earning $40 per hour working 38 hours a week would have:
- Weekly pay: $40 × 38 = $1,520
- Fortnightly pay: $1,520 × 2 = $3,040
- Annual gross: $1,520 × 52 = $79,040
This calculation assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, and no salary sacrifice. It's an estimate, not a determination of your actual pay.
Casual Loading and Super
If you're a casual employee, you're entitled to a 25% casual loading on top of your base rate. The National Minimum Wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour, so a casual worker receives $33.05 per hour including loading. When using our the timesheet, you can check a box to add 25% casual loading – never enter a rate that already includes loading.
Superannuation guarantee is 12% of your ordinary earnings, paid on top of your salary. It applies to both permanent and casual employees, and stops once your earnings reach the $270,830 maximum contribution base. For teachers, super is calculated on your base salary plus any casual loading, but not on salary-sacrificed amounts.
Tax and Take-Home Pay
Your annual gross pay is subject to income tax and the Medicare levy. For the 2026–27 financial year, the resident tax rates are:
- Nil up to $18,200
- 15% from $18,201 to $45,000
- 30% from $45,001 to $135,000
- 37% from $135,001 to $190,000
- 45% above $190,000
Medicare levy is generally 2% of taxable income, with reductions for low-income earners (using 2025–26 single thresholds as 2026–27 thresholds were not confirmed). Our take-home pay estimates include these deductions but not HELP repayments, Medicare levy surcharge, or salary packaging.
Salary Packaging for Teachers
Salary packaging for teachers is a popular way to reduce taxable income by directing pre-tax dollars toward eligible benefits such as a car, laptop, or school fees. This can significantly lower your tax bill, but it doesn't affect the super guarantee calculation – super is still paid on your ordinary earnings before packaging. When converting your hourly rate to annual pay, remember that salary packaging adjustments are not included in our basic formula. For a more detailed look, see our super and packaging page.
Award Rates and Minimum Wage
Many teachers are covered by awards or enterprise agreements that set minimum hourly rates above the National Minimum Wage. The Fair Work Commission determines award rates, which may include allowances for specific duties. If you're unsure of your correct rate, check your award or pay guide. Our pay guides can help you find the right classification.
For casual teachers, the casual loading is already built into the award rate in some cases – always confirm with your employer. The Australian Bureau of Statistics reports average weekly earnings: full-time adult ordinary time was $2,083.70 per week in May 2026, and all employees total earnings averaged $1,579.20 per week (including part-time). These are averages, not medians for any specific job.
Using the Timesheet
Our the timesheet lets you enter your base hourly rate and optionally add casual loading. It then calculates your weekly, fortnightly, and annual gross pay, along with estimated tax and super. Remember that super is shown as an additional amount paid by your employer, not deducted from your pay. For more reference data, visit our reference tables.
Important Disclaimer
Annual pay here is hourly rate × hours per week × 52. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax is the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.
