Annual Pay Calculator: Hourly to Salary with Salary Packaging Meals and Entertainment Explained

For a 38-hour week, annual gross pay is your hourly rate multiplied by 38 hours per week times 52 weeks, with super paid on top.

Understanding Your Hourly to Annual Pay Conversion

When you have an hourly rate or a salary offer, knowing your annual pay helps you compare jobs and plan your budget. The standard formula used across Australia is:

Annual gross pay = hourly rate × hours per week × 52 weeks

For a full-time employee working 38 hours per week, we assume 38 hours. If your hours differ, adjust the weekly figure. This calculation gives a base annual amount before tax, super, and any additional payments like casual loading or allowances.

Why 38 Hours and the Fortnightly View

The Fair Work Ombudsman defines full-time work as 38 hours per week (or an average of 38 over a roster cycle). Many awards and agreements use this standard. To see your pay on a fortnightly basis, simply multiply your weekly pay by 2. For example, if your weekly gross is $1,000, your fortnightly gross is $2,000. This can be useful for budgeting if you are paid fortnightly.

Distinguishing Minimum Wage, Award Rates, and Casual Loading

Australia has several pay benchmarks:

  • National Minimum Wage: From 1 July 2026, the Fair Work Commission sets this at $26.44 per hour, or $1,004.90 per week for 38 hours. Casual employees receive a 25% loading, making the casual minimum $33.05 per hour.
  • Award rates: Many industries have specific awards that set higher minimum pay rates. These rates often include penalty rates, allowances, and overtime. Our calculator does not include those extras.
  • Casual loading: If you are a casual employee, you are entitled to a 25% loading on top of your base hourly rate. On our timesheet, you can check a box to add this loading. Never type a rate that already includes casual loading – the calculator adds it for you.

Superannuation is paid on top of your ordinary earnings at 12% (from 1 July 2026) up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830. This means if your annual gross is $80,000, your employer contributes an additional $9,600 to your super fund.

Tax and Medicare Levy

Your annual gross pay is not what you take home. The Australian Taxation Office applies a progressive tax scale for residents in 2026–27:

  • $0 – $18,200: nil
  • $18,201 – $45,000: 15% on the excess over $18,200
  • $45,001 – $135,000: 30% on the excess over $45,000
  • $135,001 – $190,000: 37% on the excess over $135,000
  • $190,001 and above: 45% on the excess over $190,000

Plus the Medicare levy of 2% (with possible reductions for low-income earners). Our calculator uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 thresholds were not confirmed here. For a quick estimate, use the take-home pay guide.

Salary Packaging Meals and Entertainment

One way to reduce your taxable income is through salary packaging meals and entertainment. This arrangement allows you to use pre-tax dollars to pay for eligible food, drinks, and entertainment expenses. For example, if you package $5,000 per year for meals and entertainment, that amount is deducted from your gross pay before tax is calculated, potentially lowering your tax bill. However, our calculator does not account for salary packaging. To understand how it affects your pay, see the super and packaging page.

Using the Timesheet Calculator

Our timesheet is the home page where you enter your base hourly rate. A checkbox lets you add 25% casual loading on top. The calculator then shows your weekly, fortnightly, and annual gross pay, along with estimated tax, Medicare, and super. Remember, the results are estimates – they assume the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice.

Average Earnings for Comparison

The Australian Bureau of Statistics publishes Average Weekly Earnings. In May 2026, full-time adult ordinary time earnings were $2,083.70 per week. All employees (including part-time) earned an average of $1,579.20 per week. These are averages across all industries and states, not medians for a specific job. For job-specific pay, refer to job pay or average pay resources.

Final Notes

Always check your award or agreement for your exact pay conditions. The National Minimum Wage and super guarantee rates are set by the Fair Work Commission and the Australian Taxation Office. Use our calculator as a starting point, and consult a professional for binding advice.

Disclaimer: Annual pay here is hourly rate × hours per week × 52. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax is the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.

Questions people ask next

How do I calculate my annual salary from an hourly rate?

Multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work each week, then by 52 weeks. For a standard full-time role of 38 hours per week, the formula is: hourly rate × 38 × 52. This gives your annual gross pay before tax and super. If you work different hours, adjust the weekly hours accordingly.

Does the calculator include casual loading and super?

Yes. The [timesheet](/) lets you check a box to add 25% casual loading on top of your base hourly rate. Superannuation is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings and is paid on top of your gross pay, up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830. Remember, casual loading and super are separate – never type a rate that already includes casual loading.

What is salary packaging meals and entertainment and how does it affect my pay?

Salary packaging meals and entertainment allows you to use pre-tax income to pay for eligible food, drinks, and entertainment expenses, reducing your taxable income. This can increase your take-home pay, but our calculator does not deduct salary packaging arrangements. For a more accurate estimate, consult a tax professional or refer to the [super and packaging](/topics/super-and-packaging) guide.
