How to Convert Hourly Pay to Annual Salary: Salary Packaging Solutions Explained

Annual salary is calculated as hourly rate × 38 hours per week × 52 weeks, assuming a standard full-time week.

Converting Hourly Pay to Annual Salary: A Guide for Australian Workers

Understanding your annual salary from an hourly rate is essential for budgeting, comparing job offers, and planning your finances. The standard formula used across Australia is simple: multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work each week, then multiply by 52 weeks. For most full-time employees, the assumed week is 38 hours, as set by the Fair Work Commission. This gives you a gross annual figure before tax, super, and any salary packaging solutions.

For example, if you earn the National Minimum Wage of $26.44 per hour, your annual gross pay is $26.44 × 38 × 52 = $52,245.44. This is the starting point for understanding your total remuneration. However, your actual take-home pay will differ after tax, Medicare levy, and super contributions.

Using the Timesheet Calculator

Our the timesheet tool lets you enter your base hourly rate and optionally add 25% casual loading. It then calculates your weekly, fortnightly, and annual pay. Remember: if you are a casual employee, you should not enter a rate that already includes casual loading—simply tick the checkbox and the calculator adds it for you. This ensures accuracy when comparing with award rates or the National Minimum Wage.

Minimum Wage, Award Rates, and Casual Loading

The Fair Work Commission sets the National Minimum Wage each year. From 1 July 2026, it is $26.44 per hour for permanent employees, or $1004.90 per week for 38 hours. Casual employees receive a 25% loading, making the casual minimum $33.05 per hour. Many industries have award rates that are higher than the minimum. Always check your specific award using pay guides or reference tables. Superannuation is paid on top of your ordinary earnings at 12%, regardless of whether you are permanent or casual.

Tax and Medicare

Your annual salary is taxed according to the 2026–27 resident tax rates. The first $18,200 is tax-free. Then you pay 15% on income between $18,201 and $45,000, 30% on $45,001 to $135,000, 37% on $135,001 to $190,000, and 45% on anything above $190,000. Most residents also pay a 2% Medicare levy. The Medicare levy reduction thresholds for singles in 2025–26 apply here (the 2026–27 thresholds were not confirmed). For a precise estimate of your after-tax pay, use take-home pay.

Superannuation and Salary Packaging

Employers must pay super guarantee of 12% on your ordinary earnings, up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830. This is paid on top of your salary, not deducted from it. For example, if your annual gross is $52,245.44, your employer adds $6,269.45 in super. Understanding salary packaging solutions can help you structure your pay to reduce taxable income—for instance, by sacrificing part of your salary into super or other benefits. State Differences in Ordinary-Time Earnings

While the conversion formula is standard, actual earnings vary across states and territories. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, Average Weekly Earnings for full-time adult ordinary time in May 2026 were $2,083.70 per week nationally. This is an average, not a median for any specific job. All employees total earnings (including part-time) averaged $1,579.20 per week. These figures highlight differences in industry mix and hours worked. For job-specific pay, refer to job pay or average pay.

Fortnightly Pay

Many employers pay fortnightly. To find your fortnightly gross, simply double your weekly pay. Using the minimum wage example: $1,004.90 per week becomes $2,009.80 per fortnight. This is useful for budgeting and comparing with salary offers that are quoted fortnightly.

Important Disclaimer

Annual pay calculated here is hourly rate × hours per week × 52. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax is the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.

Questions people ask next

How do I convert my hourly rate to an annual salary?

Multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work each week, then multiply by 52 weeks. For a standard full-time role of 38 hours per week, the formula is: hourly rate × 38 × 52. For example, the National Minimum Wage of $26.44 per hour gives an annual gross of $26.44 × 38 × 52 = $52,245.44. This assumes no unpaid overtime, penalty rates, or allowances.

What is the difference between casual and permanent hourly rates?

Casual employees receive a 25% loading on top of the base hourly rate to compensate for not receiving paid leave. For example, the casual minimum wage is $33.05 per hour (including loading). Superannuation is paid on top of the base rate for both casual and permanent employees. Use [casual loading](/topics/casual-loading) to calculate the correct rate.

How is tax calculated on my annual salary, and what about super?

Tax is based on the 2026–27 resident tax brackets: nil up to $18,200, then 15% to $45,000, 30% to $135,000, 37% to $190,000, and 45% above that. Medicare levy is generally 2%. Super guarantee is 12% of ordinary earnings, paid on top by your employer, up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830. Salary packaging solutions can reduce your taxable income. See [super and packaging](/topics/super-and-packaging) for details.
