Salary Sacrifice Health Insurance and Your Hourly to Annual Pay Conversion

For a 38-hour week, your annual gross is your hourly rate times 38 times 52, and we estimate tax and super on top.

Understanding Your Hourly to Annual Conversion

When you have an hourly rate or a salary offer, converting to an annual figure helps you compare jobs and plan your budget. The standard formula is simple: multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work each week, then by 52 weeks in a year. For full-time employees, we assume a 38-hour week, as this is the standard under the Fair Work Act. For example, if you earn $30 per hour, your annual gross pay would be $30 × 38 × 52 = $59,280. This is before tax, super, and any deductions.

Our the timesheet lets you enter your base hourly rate and optionally add 25% casual loading. It then calculates your annual gross, fortnightly pay, estimated tax, and super. Remember, the timesheet assumes the same rate every week with no unpaid overtime, penalty rates, allowances, or salary sacrifice arrangements.

The National Minimum Wage vs Award Rates

The Fair Work Commission sets the National Minimum Wage each year. From 1 July 2026, the minimum is $26.44 per hour, or $1004.90 per week for a 38-hour week. Casual employees receive a 25% loading, making it $33.05 per hour. However, many industries and occupations have award rates that are higher than the minimum. For example, the Financial and Insurance Services industry average full-time ordinary time earnings, as reported by the Australian Bureau of Statistics in May 2026, was $2341.30 per week. This is an industry average, not a job median. Your specific award or enterprise agreement may set a different rate. Always check your pay guides or consult the Fair Work Ombudsman.

Award rates are set by the Fair Work Commission for specific industries. For instance, the Hospitality Award has different rates for different classifications. The National Minimum Wage is the floor, but most employees are entitled to more under an award. To see typical pay for your role, visit our job pay page.

Casual Loading and Superannuation

If you are a casual employee, your hourly rate typically includes a 25% casual loading to compensate for lack of leave entitlements. When using our timesheet, do not enter a rate that already includes casual loading; instead, enter your base rate and check the casual loading box. The timesheet will add 25% on top.

Superannuation is paid on top of your ordinary earnings. From 1 July 2026, the super guarantee is 12% of your ordinary time earnings, up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830 per year. For example, on a $59,280 annual salary, your employer would contribute an additional $7,113.60 in super. This is not deducted from your pay; it is an extra benefit. For more on how super works with your pay, see our super and packaging page.

Fortnightly Pay and Tax

Many employers pay fortnightly. Your fortnightly gross is simply your weekly pay multiplied by two. For the $30/hour example, weekly pay is $1,140 (38 hours × $30), so fortnightly is $2,280. Our timesheet shows both weekly and fortnightly amounts.

Tax is estimated using the 2026–27 resident tax rates: nil on the first $18,200, 15% on income from $18,201 to $45,000, 30% from $45,001 to $135,000, 37% from $135,001 to $190,000, and 45% above that. The Medicare levy is generally 2% of taxable income. We use the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 thresholds were not confirmed at the time of this estimate. Note that HELP repayments, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted.

Let's work through the $30/hour example in detail. Annual gross $59,280. Tax estimate: first $18,200 tax-free, then $26,800 (from $18,201 to $45,000) at 15% = $4,020, then $14,280 (from $45,001 to $59,280) at 30% = $4,284. Total tax $8,304. Medicare levy: 2% of $59,280 = $1,185.60. Net after tax and Medicare: $59,280 - $8,304 - $1,185.60 = $49,790.40. Fortnightly net would be approximately $1,915.02 (dividing by 26). Super on top: $7,113.60 per year.

Salary Sacrifice Health Insurance

If you are considering salary sacrifice health insurance, it can reduce your taxable income by allowing you to pay health insurance premiums from pre-tax dollars. However, our calculator does not account for salary sacrifice arrangements. The annual pay shown is your gross income before any salary sacrifice deductions. For more details on how salary packaging affects your pay, see our super and packaging page. Remember that salary sacrifice health insurance is a common way to lower your tax bill, but it must be offered by your employer and comply with Australian Taxation Office rules.

Average Earnings and Comparisons

The Australian Bureau of Statistics publishes Average Weekly Earnings. In May 2026, full-time adult ordinary time earnings averaged $2,083.70 per week. All employees total earnings (including part-time) averaged $1,579.20 per week. These are averages, not medians for specific jobs. Your pay may differ based on your industry, experience, and location. For reference tables, visit our reference tables page.

Important Disclaimer

Annual pay here is hourly rate × hours per week × 52. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax is the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.
