Hourly to Annual Pay: How Salary Sacrifice NSW Affects Your Take-Home Pay
For a 38-hour week, annual gross pay is hourly rate × 38 × 52, with super paid on top at 12%.
Converting Your Hourly Rate to Annual Pay
Understanding your annual pay from an hourly rate is straightforward: multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work per week, then by 52 weeks. For a full-time employee on a standard 38-hour week, the formula is:
Annual gross pay = hourly rate × 38 × 52
This calculation assumes you work the same number of hours every week, with no unpaid overtime, penalty rates, allowances, or salary sacrifice arrangements. It gives you a base figure before tax and super.
Why 38 Hours?
The Fair Work Ombudsman considers 38 hours the standard full-time week under the National Employment Standards. Many awards and agreements use this as the benchmark. If you work a different number of hours, adjust the formula accordingly. For example, a 40-hour week would use 40 instead of 38.
The Fortnightly View
Your fortnightly pay is simply your weekly pay multiplied by two. For a 38-hour week at $30 per hour, weekly pay is $1,140, so fortnightly pay is $2,280. This can help you budget or compare with salary offers quoted per fortnight.
State Differences in Ordinary-Time Earnings
Earnings vary across Australia. The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) reports average weekly ordinary time earnings for full-time adults. In May 2026, the national average was $2,083.70 per week. New South Wales (NSW) recorded a higher average of $2,108.80 per week, reflecting the state's strong economy and industry mix.
This difference matters when you're comparing job offers or negotiating pay. A role in NSW might offer a higher hourly rate than the same role in another state, but you should also consider cost of living and other factors.
How Salary Sacrifice NSW Fits In
Salary sacrifice is an arrangement where you give up part of your pre-tax salary in exchange for benefits like a car, laptop, or additional super contributions. In NSW, salary sacrifice is common in both public and private sectors. It reduces your taxable income, which can lower the tax you pay. However, it also reduces your reported gross pay for purposes like loan applications.
Our calculator does not deduct salary sacrifice. The annual pay shown is your gross income before any packaging. If you use salary sacrifice NSW, your actual take-home pay will be different. For a personalised estimate, consider using the ATO's tax withholding tools or speaking with a payroll officer.
Minimum Wage, Awards, and Casual Loading
The National Minimum Wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour, or $1,004.90 per week for 38 hours. This is set by the Fair Work Commission. Many employees are covered by awards that specify higher minimum rates for their industry or role.
Casual employees receive a 25% loading on top of the base rate. For the minimum wage, that's $33.05 per hour. Our calculator has a checkbox to add 25% casual loading. Do not type a rate that already includes casual loading – the calculator adds it for you.
Superannuation Paid on Top
Super guarantee is 12% of your ordinary earnings, paid by your employer on top of your gross pay. It does not come out of your hourly rate. The maximum earnings base for super in 2026–27 is $270,830. Our calculator estimates super as 12% of your annual gross, up to that limit.
Tax and Medicare
Tax is calculated using the 2026–27 resident tax rates:
- Nil on the first $18,200
- 15% on income from $18,201 to $45,000
- 30% on income from $45,001 to $135,000
- 37% on income from $135,001 to $190,000
- 45% on income above $190,000
Medicare levy is generally 2% of taxable income. Our calculator uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 thresholds were not confirmed in this estimate. HELP repayments, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted.
