Salary Sacrifice Superannuation Calculator: Convert Your Hourly Rate to Annual Pay with Tax and Super
Based on a 38-hour week, your annual gross pay is your hourly rate multiplied by 1,976 hours (38 × 52).
From Hourly to Annual: The Simple Formula
Converting your hourly rate to an annual salary is straightforward: multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work each week, then by 52 weeks. For a full-time employee working 38 hours per week, the formula is:
Annual gross pay = hourly rate × 38 × 52
That’s 1,976 hours per year. For example, at the National Minimum Wage of $26.44 per hour (from 1 July 2026), your annual gross pay would be approximately $52,245. If you’re paid fortnightly, that’s about $2,009 per fortnight (weekly pay × 2).
This calculation assumes you work the same hours every week with no unpaid overtime, penalty rates, allowances, or salary sacrifice. It’s a starting point for understanding your gross income before tax and super.
Understanding Award Rates, Casual Loading, and the National Minimum Wage
The National Minimum Wage is set by the Fair Work Commission and applies to employees not covered by an award or agreement. From 1 July 2026, it is $26.44 per hour, or $1,004.90 per week for 38 hours. Many employees are covered by industry or occupation awards, which set higher minimum rates. Award rates vary by classification and industry – check the relevant award for your job.
Casual employees receive a 25% loading on top of the base rate to compensate for not receiving paid leave. For the National Minimum Wage, the casual rate is $33.05 per hour ($26.44 + 25%). This loading is part of your ordinary earnings, so superannuation is calculated on the total casual rate.
When using our hourly conversion tool, you enter your base hourly rate. If you are casual, tick the checkbox to add 25% casual loading – do not enter a rate that already includes loading.
Estimating Your Annual Gross Pay
Using the formula, you can estimate your annual gross pay for any hourly rate. For example:
- $30 per hour × 38 hours × 52 weeks = $59,280 per year
- $40 per hour × 38 hours × 52 weeks = $79,040 per year
- $50 per hour × 38 hours × 52 weeks = $98,800 per year
If you work a different number of hours per week, adjust the formula accordingly. The Australian Bureau of Statistics reports that full-time adult average weekly ordinary time earnings were $2,083.70 in May 2026, while all employees (including part-time) averaged $1,579.20 per week. These are averages, not medians for any specific job.
Tax and Medicare Levy on Your Annual Salary
Once you have your annual gross pay, you can estimate your tax and Medicare levy using the 2026–27 resident tax rates:
- $0 – $18,200: nil
- $18,201 – $45,000: 15% on excess over $18,200
- $45,001 – $135,000: 30% on excess over $45,000
- $135,001 – $190,000: 37% on excess over $135,000
- Over $190,000: 45% on excess over $190,000
The Medicare levy is generally 2% of your taxable income. For 2026–27, the single reduction thresholds are not confirmed, so we use the 2025–26 thresholds. This means our estimate may differ slightly from your actual liability.
Example for $52,245 annual gross (National Minimum Wage):
- Tax: $18,200 tax-free, then 15% on $30,045 = $4,506.75
- Medicare: 2% of $52,245 = $1,044.90
- Total tax and Medicare: $5,551.65
- Estimated take-home pay: $46,693.35
For higher incomes, the marginal rates apply. Use our take-home pay calculator for a detailed breakdown.
Superannuation Guarantee: Paid on Top
Your employer must pay superannuation guarantee of 12% of your ordinary earnings, on top of your salary. For the $52,245 example, that’s $6,269.40 per year. Super is capped at the maximum contribution base of $270,830 – earnings above that do not attract the guarantee.
Super is calculated on your ordinary time earnings, including casual loading if applicable. It is not deducted from your pay; it’s an additional contribution to your super fund.
Using the Salary Sacrifice Superannuation Calculator
Our salary sacrifice superannuation calculator helps you see the effect of salary sacrificing additional super contributions. Salary sacrifice reduces your taxable income, potentially lowering your tax and Medicare levy, while boosting your super balance. The calculator uses your hourly rate, hours, and chosen sacrifice amount to estimate the net impact on your take-home pay and super.
Note that the annual pay estimate on this page does not include salary sacrifice. To model that scenario, use the dedicated calculator. It accounts for the 2026–27 tax scale, Medicare levy, and the 12% super guarantee.
Disclaimer
Annual pay here is hourly rate × hours per week × 52. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax is the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.
