Salary Sacrifice WA: How Casual Loading and Super Affect Your Hourly to Annual Pay
For a full-time employee working 38 hours per week, your annual gross pay is your hourly rate multiplied by 38 then by 52, with super paid on top.
Converting Your Hourly Rate to Annual Pay
When you have an hourly rate or a salary offer, converting it to an annual figure helps you compare jobs and plan your budget. The standard formula is simple: multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work each week, then by 52 weeks in a year. For most full-time employees, the typical week is 38 hours. So, annual gross pay ≈ hourly rate × 38 × 52.
This calculation assumes you work the same hours every week, with no unpaid overtime, penalty rates, or allowances. It also does not include salary sacrifice arrangements. For a more detailed breakdown, you can use the timesheet to enter your base hourly rate and see the annual estimate.
The Standard Formula in Practice
Let’s say your hourly rate is $30. For a 38-hour week, your weekly gross pay is $1,140 ($30 × 38). Multiply by 52 to get $59,280 per year. If you work different hours, adjust the weekly hours accordingly. The formula works for any number of hours.
Casual Loading and Super
If you are a casual employee, you are entitled to a casual loading of 25% on top of your base hourly rate. This loading compensates for not receiving paid leave entitlements. The Fair Work Commission sets the National Minimum Wage, which from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour for permanent employees. For casuals, the minimum becomes $33.05 per hour (including the 25% loading). When you use our calculator, you can check a box to add casual loading. Never enter a rate that already includes casual loading – let the calculator add it for you.
The casual loading applies to your ordinary hours and also affects your super guarantee. Super is calculated at 12% of your ordinary earnings, including any casual loading. This means a casual worker on the minimum wage would have super contributions based on $33.05 per hour, not $26.44. For more on this, see casual loading.
Superannuation is paid on top of your salary by your employer. It is not deducted from your pay. The super guarantee is currently 12% of your ordinary earnings, up to a maximum contribution base of $270,830 per year (as of 2026–27). If your annual earnings exceed this, your employer only pays super on the first $270,830. For example, if your annual gross pay is $80,000, your employer would contribute an additional $9,600 in super (12% of $80,000).
Fortnightly and Weekly Breakdown
Many employers pay fortnightly. To find your fortnightly gross pay, simply multiply your weekly pay by two. For a 38-hour week at $30 per hour, weekly pay is $1,140, so fortnightly is $2,280. This can help you align your budget with your pay cycle. Our calculator shows both weekly and fortnightly amounts.
Tax and Medicare Considerations
Your annual gross pay is not what you take home. The Australian Taxation Office applies a progressive tax scale for residents in 2026–27:
- Nil tax on the first $18,200
- 15% on income from $18,201 to $45,000
- 30% on income from $45,001 to $135,000
- 37% on income from $135,001 to $190,000
- 45% on income above $190,000
Plus, the Medicare levy is generally 2% of your taxable income. Our calculator uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds for Medicare, as the 2026–27 thresholds were not confirmed at the time of this estimate. Note that HELP repayments, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. For a deeper look at your net pay, visit take-home pay.
Salary Sacrifice in Western Australia
Salary sacrifice arrangements allow you to reduce your taxable income by directing part of your pre-tax salary towards benefits such as a car, super contributions, or other approved items. In Western Australia, salary sacrifice is common in the public sector and some private industries. The term "salary sacrifice wa" often refers to packaging options available to employees in WA. However, the rules are set nationally by the ATO.
If you are considering salary sacrifice, it is important to understand how it affects your annual pay calculation. Our calculator does not account for salary sacrifice, so your estimated tax may be higher than your actual liability if you have a packaging arrangement. For more details, see super and packaging and consult a tax professional.
Award Rates and Industry Averages
The National Minimum Wage is the floor, but many employees are covered by awards or enterprise agreements that set higher minimum rates. The Fair Work Ombudsman provides pay guides for specific industries and occupations. These guides list the minimum hourly rates for classifications, including any allowances or penalty rates. If you are covered by an award, your hourly rate may be higher than the national minimum.
For context, the Australian Bureau of Statistics reports Average Weekly Earnings. In May 2026, full-time adult ordinary time earnings were $2,083.70 per week nationally, and $2,227.40 per week in Western Australia. These are averages across all industries, not medians for a specific job. Our average pay page provides more context.

Important Disclaimer
Our calculator provides an estimate based on the assumptions stated. It does not include unpaid overtime, penalty rates, allowances, or salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax uses the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold, and Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds. HELP, Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. Always consult a qualified professional for your specific circumstances.
