Senior Associate Lawyer Salary: How to Convert Hourly Rates to Annual Pay Under the Legal Services Award
For a senior associate lawyer, the Fair Work Legal Services Award does not list a specific classification, but using the Level 6 law clerk rate of $36.03 per hour, the annual salary would be approximately $71,200 based on 38 hours per week, though actual market salaries are often higher.
Understanding the Senior Associate Lawyer Salary
If you are researching a senior associate lawyer salary, you are likely looking for a figure that reflects the responsibilities of a senior legal role. The Fair Work Ombudsman’s Legal Services Award 2020 covers many legal employees, but it does not include a specific classification for 'senior associate.' The highest clerical classification is Level 6 – Law clerk, with a minimum hourly rate of $36.03 from 1 July 2026. In practice, senior associate salaries are often negotiated above award rates, and many firms pay annualised wages that exceed the minimum.
To convert an hourly rate into an annual salary, use the standard formula: hourly rate × hours per week × 52. For full-time employees under the award, ordinary hours are 38 per week. So if you earn $36.03 per hour, your annual salary would be approximately $71,200. However, the Australian Bureau of Statistics reports that full-time adult average weekly ordinary time earnings were $2,083.70 per week in May 2026, which equates to about $108,350 per year. This suggests that a typical senior associate lawyer earns well above the award minimum.
Hourly to Annual: The Calculation
Let’s break it down. If you know your hourly rate, multiply it by 38 (hours per week) and then by 52 (weeks per year). For example:
- $40 per hour → $40 × 38 × 52 = $79,040 per year
- $50 per hour → $50 × 38 × 52 = $98,800 per year
- $60 per hour → $60 × 38 × 52 = $118,560 per year
You can also calculate your fortnightly pay by multiplying your weekly earnings by 2. For a $50/hour rate, weekly pay is $1,900, so fortnightly is $3,800. This helps when budgeting or checking payslips.
Award Minimums vs Market Rates
The Fair Work Ombudsman’s pay guides show minimum rates for each award classification. For the Legal Services Award, the rates from 1 July 2026 are:
- Level 1 – Legal clerical: $28.24/hour
- Level 2: $29.45/hour
- Level 3: $31.11/hour
- Level 4: $32.67/hour
- Level 5 (law graduate): $33.99/hour
- Level 6 (law clerk): $36.03/hour
A senior associate lawyer would typically be classified above Level 6, so these award rates serve only as a floor. Many employers use annualised wage arrangements under clause 17 of the award, which must still ensure the employee receives at least what they would have earned under the award over the year.
Casual Loading and Superannuation
If you work as a casual senior associate, you are entitled to a 25% loading on top of the minimum hourly rate. For a Level 6 law clerk, the casual rate would be $36.03 × 1.25 = $45.04 per hour. This loading compensates for the lack of paid leave and other entitlements. Our casual loading page explains how this works.
Superannuation is paid on top of your base salary. From 1 July 2026, the Super Guarantee is 12% of ordinary earnings, up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830. So if your annual salary is $100,000, your employer must contribute $12,000 to your super fund. This is not deducted from your pay; it is an additional cost to the employer.
Tax on Your Salary
For the 2026–27 financial year, the Australian Taxation Office’s resident tax rates are:
- $0 – $18,200: Nil
- $18,201 – $45,000: 15% on excess over $18,200
- $45,001 – $135,000: $4,020 + 30% on excess over $45,000
- $135,001 – $190,000: $31,020 + 37% on excess over $135,000
- Over $190,000: $51,370 + 45% on excess over $190,000
Plus a Medicare levy of 2% (with possible reductions for low-income earners). For a senior associate earning $120,000, the tax would be approximately $31,067 plus Medicare of $2,400, leaving about $86,533 after tax (excluding HELP or other deductions).
Using Our Tools
To quickly estimate your annual pay from an hourly rate, use our hourly conversion guide. For a full breakdown of minimum wages and award rates, see our pay guides page. Remember that the figures here are estimates based on standard assumptions. Your actual pay may vary due to overtime, penalty rates, allowances, or salary packaging.
Disclaimer
Annual pay here is hourly rate × hours per week × 52. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax is the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.
