Smart Salary Novated Lease: How to Calculate Your Annual Pay from Hourly Rate

For a full-time employee working 38 hours per week, annual gross pay is hourly rate × 38 × 52. The National Minimum Wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour, giving $52,254.80 per year before tax and super.

Converting Hourly Pay to Annual Salary

To convert an hourly rate to an annual salary, use the formula: hourly rate × hours per week × 52. This assumes you work the same number of hours every week with no unpaid overtime, penalty rates, or allowances. For full-time employees, the standard week is 38 hours, as defined by the Fair Work Ombudsman. For example, the National Minimum Wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour, giving an annual gross of $26.44 × 38 × 52 = $52,254.80.

If you are paid a salary, you can work backwards to find your equivalent hourly rate. Divide your annual salary by 52 weeks, then by your weekly hours. A fortnightly pay period is simply weekly pay × 2. Use the timesheet to experiment with different rates and hours.

Understanding Minimum Wages and Award Rates

The National Minimum Wage applies to employees not covered by an award or enterprise agreement. Most employees are covered by an award, which sets higher minimum pay rates, allowances, and penalty rates. The Fair Work Ombudsman publishes pay guides for each award, listing the minimum hourly rates for full-time, part-time, and casual employees. Casual employees receive a 25% loading on top of the base rate – for the minimum wage, that’s $33.05 per hour. Superannuation is paid on top of ordinary earnings, not on the loading. See casual loading for more.

Award rates change each year on 1 July after the Annual Wage Review. The Fair Work Commission determines the increase. Always check the current pay guide for your award.

Superannuation and Tax

Super guarantee is 12% of ordinary time earnings, paid on top of your gross pay. For 2026–27, the maximum contribution base is $270,830. If your annual salary exceeds that, super is capped. For example, on the minimum wage full-time salary of $52,254.80, super adds $6,270.58 per year.

Tax for 2026–27 residents: nil up to $18,200; 15% from $18,201 to $45,000; 30% from $45,001 to $135,000; 37% from $135,001 to $190,000; 45% above $190,000. Medicare levy is generally 2%. The tax-free threshold is included. Use the take-home pay page to estimate your net income.

Annualised Wages and Salary Packaging

Some awards allow annualised wages – a fixed annual amount that covers minimum pay, penalties, overtime, allowances, and annual leave loading. The Fair Work Ombudsman explains that an annualised wage must be reviewed every 12 months to ensure it’s not less than what the employee would have earned under the award. This is different from a simple salary under an employment contract.

Salary packaging (salary sacrifice) lets you use pre-tax income to pay for benefits like a car, phone, or super contributions. The Australian Taxation Office treats most benefits as fringe benefits, subject to FBT. However, from 1 April 2027, work-related items provided through salary sacrifice will no longer be FBT-exempt.

Smart Salary Novated Lease

A smart salary novated lease is a specific salary packaging arrangement for a car. Your employer enters a lease on your behalf, and the lease payments and running costs are deducted from your pre-tax salary. This reduces your taxable income, potentially lowering your tax and Medicare levy. The benefit is subject to FBT, but many employers offer this as a tax-effective way to own or lease a car.

When calculating your annual pay under a smart salary novated lease, remember that the lease payments reduce your gross salary for tax purposes, but your super guarantee is still based on your ordinary earnings (before salary sacrifice). Your take-home pay will be lower because the lease payments come out, but you save tax. Always review the arrangement annually, as recommended by the Fair Work Ombudsman for annualised wages. Key Considerations

  • The formula hourly × 38 × 52 is a standard estimate. Your actual pay may vary due to overtime, penalties, or part-time hours.
  • Super is paid on top, not included in the hourly rate.
  • Tax estimates use the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare levy uses 2025–26 single reduction thresholds as 2026–27 thresholds were not confirmed.
  • This is an estimate only. Use reference tables for official rates.

Always consult the Fair Work Ombudsman for your award and the ATO for your personal tax situation.

Questions people ask next

What is a smart salary novated lease and how does it affect my take-home pay?

A smart salary novated lease is a salary packaging arrangement where your employer uses your pre-tax income to pay for a car lease and running costs. This reduces your taxable income, so you pay less tax and Medicare levy. However, your employer may pay fringe benefits tax (FBT) on the benefit. Your take-home pay will be lower because the lease payments come out before tax, but you save on tax overall. Always check with your employer and the ATO rules, especially changes from 1 April 2027 for work-related items.

How do I calculate my annual salary from an hourly rate if I work casual hours?

For casual employees, the formula is the same: hourly rate × hours per week × 52. But remember that casual employees receive a 25% casual loading on top of the base award rate. For example, the National Minimum Wage casual rate from 1 July 2026 is $33.05 per hour. If you work 38 hours per week, your annual gross would be $33.05 × 38 × 52 = $65,306.80. Super is paid on top of ordinary earnings, not on the loading. Use the [casual loading](/topics/casual-loading) page for more details.

Can I use an annualised wage arrangement with a smart salary novated lease?

Yes, some awards allow annualised wages that cover penalties, overtime, and allowances in a fixed amount. If you have an annualised wage, you can still enter a smart salary novated lease. However, the annualised wage must be reviewed each year to ensure it’s not less than what you would have earned under the award. The lease payments are deducted from your salary before tax, so your annualised wage amount may need adjustment. Check your award’s rules on annualised wages at and speak to your employer.
