Teacher Salary SA: Hourly to Annual Conversion with Casual Loading and Super
This guide uses a standard 38-hour week to convert your hourly rate to annual gross pay, then estimates tax and super contributions.
Converting Hourly to Annual Pay
To convert an hourly rate to annual gross pay, use the formula: hourly rate × hours per week × 52. This guide assumes a standard 38-hour week, which is the full-time benchmark under the National Employment Standards. For example, an hourly rate of $30 gives:
- Weekly: $30 × 38 = $1,140
- Fortnightly: $1,140 × 2 = $2,280
- Annual: $1,140 × 52 = $59,280
If you work different hours, adjust accordingly. The timesheet on this site lets you enter your base hourly rate and see the annual, fortnightly, and weekly figures instantly.
Understanding Casual Loading
Casual loading is a 25% addition to the base hourly rate, compensating for lack of paid leave. The Fair Work Ombudsman sets this as a minimum for most awards. When researching teacher salary SA, note that casual teachers often receive this loading on top of their base award rate. For instance, the National Minimum Wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour; with casual loading it becomes $33.05 per hour. Super is paid on the total ordinary earnings, including the loading. Use the casual loading page to see how this affects your pay.
Award Rates vs Minimum Wage
The National Minimum Wage is a floor, but many awards—including those covering teachers—set higher minimum rates. The Fair Work Ombudsman publishes award pay guides. For a teacher salary SA, check the relevant state or federal award. The figures here are estimates; your actual rate may differ.
Superannuation and Tax
Super guarantee is 12% of ordinary earnings, paid on top of your salary. It applies up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830 per year. For the example above ($59,280 annual), super would be $59,280 × 12% = $7,113.60, making total employment cost $66,393.60. See super and packaging for more.
Tax for 2026-27 uses the resident scale:
- Nil on first $18,200
- 15% on $18,201–$45,000
- 30% on $45,001–$135,000
- 37% on $135,001–$190,000
- 45% above $190,000 Plus 2% Medicare levy (using 2025-26 single reduction thresholds). For $59,280 annual, tax would be approximately $8,717 plus Medicare $1,185.60, leaving net around $49,377.40. This is an estimate; use the take-home pay calculator for your exact situation.
Average Earnings in South Australia
The Australian Bureau of Statistics reports average weekly ordinary time earnings for full-time adults in South Australia as $1,970.20 per week (May 2026). This is an average across all industries and occupations, not a median for teachers. When comparing a teacher salary SA, remember that averages can be skewed by high earners. For personalised figures, refer to the average pay page.
Important Notes
- The conversion assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice.
- Casual loading is added via a checkbox on the timesheet—do not enter a rate that already includes loading.
- Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base.
- Tax uses the 2026-27 resident scale with full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses 2025-26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026-27 thresholds were not confirmed here.
- HELP, Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted.
- This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.
