VPS3 Salary: Converting Your Hourly Rate to Annual Pay in Australia
A VPS3 salary is set by the Victorian Government, not by Fair Work awards; for a typical full-time role (38 hours/week), the annual gross is hourly rate × 38 × 52.
Understanding the VPS3 Salary and How to Convert Hourly to Annual
If you're looking at a VPS3 salary – the third classification in the Victorian Public Service – you might be offered an hourly rate or an annual figure. Converting between the two is straightforward, but it helps to know the rules that apply to your role. This guide explains how to turn an hourly rate into annual, fortnightly, and after-tax pay, and how the VPS3 salary compares with the National Minimum Wage and award rates.
The National Minimum Wage vs. Award Rates vs. VPS3
Australia has several pay systems. The National Minimum Wage (NMW) is the legal floor. From 1 July 2026, the NMW is $26.44 per hour, or $1,004.90 for a 38-hour week. Most employees are covered by a modern award, which sets higher minimum rates for specific industries. The Fair Work Commission publishes the Modern Awards Pay Database with all the classification rates, allowances, and penalty rates.
A VPS3 salary is different. It is set by the Victorian Government under the Victorian Public Service enterprise agreement, not by Fair Work. VPS3 roles are typically administrative, policy, or technical positions. The exact rate depends on your employer and the agreement in place. Because it's not a Fair Work award, you won't find VPS3 rates in the Fair Work Ombudsman's pay guides. Instead, check the Victorian Public Sector Commission or your employment contract.
How to Convert Your Hourly Rate to Annual Pay
The basic formula is:
Annual gross ≈ hourly rate × hours per week × 52
For a full-time VPS3 role, the standard is 38 hours per week. So:
- If your hourly rate is $35.00, annual gross = $35.00 × 38 × 52 = $69,160.
- If your hourly rate is $45.00, annual gross = $45.00 × 38 × 52 = $88,920.
This assumes you work the same hours every week with no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, and no allowances. If you work part-time, use your actual weekly hours. The formula works for any hourly rate – just multiply by your hours and 52.
The Fortnightly View
Many employers pay fortnightly. To get your gross fortnightly pay:
Fortnightly gross = hourly rate × hours per week × 2
Using the same example: $35.00 × 38 × 2 = $2,660 per fortnight (before tax and super).
This is handy for budgeting. You can also divide the annual figure by 26 to get the same result.
Casual Loading and Superannuation
If you are a casual employee under an award or the NMW, you get a 25% loading on top of the base rate. For the NMW, that's $33.05 per hour. Do not include casual loading in the hourly rate you type into our timesheet – there is a checkbox to add it automatically.
VPS3 roles are almost always permanent, so casual loading does not apply. However, superannuation is paid on top of your ordinary earnings. From 1 July 2026, the super guarantee is 12% of your ordinary time earnings, up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830. If your annual gross is $80,000, your employer adds $9,600 to super (12% of $80,000). This is separate from your take-home pay.
Tax Considerations
Your annual gross is not what you take home. The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) uses the 2026–27 resident tax rates:
- $0 – $18,200: nil
- $18,201 – $45,000: 15% of excess over $18,200
- $45,001 – $135,000: $4,020 + 30% of excess over $45,000
- $135,001 – $190,000: $31,020 + 37% of excess over $135,000
- $190,001+: $51,420 + 45% of excess over $190,000
Plus the Medicare levy of 2% (using 2025–26 single reduction thresholds).
For a VPS3 salary of $80,000 annual gross:
- Tax on first $18,200 = $0
- Tax on $18,201–$45,000 = 15% of $26,800 = $4,020
- Tax on $45,001–$80,000 = 30% of $35,000 = $10,500
- Total tax = $14,520
- Medicare levy (2% of $80,000) = $1,600
- Total deductions = $16,120
- Take-home pay ≈ $63,880 per year, or about $1,228 per week.
Use our take-home pay guide for more detail. Remember, this estimate does not include HELP repayments, the Medicare levy surcharge, or salary packaging.
Using Our Timesheet Tool
Our timesheet is the simplest way to see your annual, fortnightly, and after-tax figures. Type your base hourly rate (without casual loading) and select your hours per week (default 38). The tool shows:
- Annual gross
- Fortnightly gross
- Estimated tax and Medicare
- Estimated take-home pay
- Superannuation (12% on top)
You can also check the minimum wage page for the latest NMW rates, or browse pay guides for award-specific information.
Whether you're negotiating a VPS3 salary or comparing offers, understanding the conversion gives you confidence. The key is knowing which system applies to your role – Fair Work or a state government agreement – and using the correct hours and loadings.
Open the same rate on the home timesheet. Read the reference tables before treating a figure as your pay.
