What Is Salary Sacrifice in Australia? Hourly to Annual Pay Explained

Annual gross pay is your hourly rate multiplied by hours per week (assumed 38 for full-time) times 52 weeks, before tax and super.

Understanding Hourly to Annual Pay in Australia

If you are paid by the hour or considering a salary offer, converting between hourly and annual figures is a key step. The standard formula is:

Annual gross pay = hourly rate × hours per week × 52

For a typical full-time employee, we assume 38 hours per week, as set by the Fair Work Commission. This gives a consistent baseline for comparison. For example, the National Minimum Wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour, so the annual figure is $26.44 × 38 × 52 = $52,261.44.

Why 38 Hours and 52 Weeks?

The 38-hour week is the standard ordinary hours for full-time employees under many awards and the National Employment Standards. Using 52 weeks assumes you work every week of the year without unpaid leave. If you work part-time or have irregular hours, adjust the weekly hours accordingly. The the timesheet calculator lets you enter your own hours.

Fortnightly Pay

Many employers pay fortnightly. To find your gross fortnightly pay, multiply your weekly pay by two. For the minimum wage, weekly pay is $1,004.90 (38 hours × $26.44), so fortnightly is $2,009.80. This can help you budget between pay cycles.

Types of Pay Rates

Australia has several pay rate categories. It is important to know which one applies to you.

National Minimum Wage

From 1 July 2026, the National Minimum Wage is $26.44 per hour for adults. This is the legal floor set by the Fair Work Commission. Casual employees receive an additional 25% loading, making their minimum $33.05 per hour.

Award Rates

Many industries have modern awards that set higher minimum rates than the National Minimum Wage. These rates vary by classification and experience. Always check your applicable award via the Fair Work Ombudsman’s pay guides or reference tables.

Casual Loading

Casual loading (25%) compensates for not receiving paid sick leave or annual leave. On the timesheet calculator, you can tick a box to add 25% casual loading to your base hourly rate. Do not enter a rate that already includes casual loading; the calculator adds it for you.

Superannuation Guarantee

Employers must pay superannuation on top of your ordinary earnings. From 1 July 2026, the super guarantee rate is 12% of your ordinary time earnings, up to a maximum contribution base of $270,830 per year. Super is not deducted from your pay; it is an additional cost to your employer. For the minimum wage example, the employer would contribute an extra $6,271.37 per year (12% of $52,261.44).

Tax and Medicare Levy

Your annual gross pay is subject to income tax and the Medicare levy. The 2026–27 resident tax rates are:

  • Nil on the first $18,200
  • 15% on income between $18,201 and $45,000
  • 30% on income between $45,001 and $135,000
  • 37% on income between $135,001 and $190,000
  • 45% on income above $190,000

In addition, a 2% Medicare levy generally applies. The calculator uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds for Medicare because the 2026–27 thresholds were not confirmed at the time of preparation.

Example Tax Calculation

For a full-time worker earning the National Minimum Wage ($52,261.44):

  • Tax-free threshold: $18,200 → $0 tax
  • Next bracket ($18,201–$45,000): $26,800 taxed at 15% = $4,020
  • Remaining ($45,001–$52,261.44): $7,261.44 taxed at 30% = $2,178.43
  • Total tax: $6,198.43
  • Medicare levy (2% of $52,261.44): $1,045.23
  • Net annual pay: $52,261.44 – $6,198.43 – $1,045.23 = $45,017.78

This is an estimate. Your actual tax may differ if you have deductions, offsets, or salary sacrifice arrangements.

What Is Salary Sacrifice in Australia?

What is salary sacrifice in Australia? It is an agreement between you and your employer to reduce your pre-tax salary in exchange for benefits like a car, electronic devices, or additional super contributions. Salary sacrifice lowers your taxable income, potentially reducing the tax you pay. However, it also reduces your ordinary time earnings for super guarantee purposes (unless the sacrifice is to super). The calculator on this site does not account for salary sacrifice. If you have a salary packaging arrangement, you should adjust your hourly rate or annual figure manually to reflect the reduced salary.

Using the Timesheet Calculator

The the timesheet page is the home of our hourly-to-annual converter. Enter your base hourly rate (without casual loading). If you are a casual employee, check the box to add 25% casual loading. The calculator will show your annual gross pay, fortnightly pay, estimated tax, Medicare levy, and superannuation. It assumes 38 hours per week unless you change the hours.

Important Limitations

Annual pay here is hourly rate × hours per week × 52. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax is the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.

Average Weekly Earnings

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) reports Average Weekly Earnings. For May 2026, full-time adult ordinary time earnings were $2,083.70 per week. All employees (including part-time) averaged $1,579.20 per week. These are averages across all industries and occupations, not medians for a specific job. For job-specific pay, refer to job pay or award rates.

Questions people ask next

What is salary sacrifice in Australia and how does it affect my take-home pay?

Salary sacrifice is an arrangement where you forgo part of your pre-tax salary in exchange for benefits such as a car, laptop, or additional super contributions. It reduces your taxable income, which can lower the tax you pay, but it also reduces your ordinary earnings for super guarantee purposes. The calculator on this site does not deduct salary sacrifice; you should adjust your hourly rate or annual figure manually if you have a salary packaging arrangement.

How do I calculate my annual salary from an hourly rate?

Multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work each week, then multiply by 52. For a standard full-time worker, we assume 38 hours per week. For example, at the National Minimum Wage of $26.44 per hour, annual gross pay is $26.44 × 38 × 52 = $52,261.44. This does not include casual loading, overtime, or penalty rates.

What is casual loading and how does it affect my hourly rate?

Casual loading is an extra 25% paid on top of the base hourly rate to compensate for the lack of paid leave entitlements. The National Minimum Wage for casual workers is $33.05 per hour (base $26.44 plus 25%). On the timesheet calculator, you can check a box to add 25% casual loading to your entered base rate. Never enter a rate that already includes casual loading.
