What Is the NRL Salary Cap and How Does It Compare to Hourly to Annual Pay?
The national minimum wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour, or $1004.90 per week for 38 ordinary hours, with casual loading of 25% bringing it to $33.05 per hour.
Converting Hourly Pay to Annual, Fortnightly, and Weekly Figures
If you know your hourly rate, you can estimate your annual gross pay using a simple formula: hourly rate × hours per week × 52. For most full-time employees under awards or the national system, the standard week is 38 ordinary hours. Our the timesheet uses this assumption unless you enter a different number.
For example, the national minimum wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour. That gives:
- Weekly: $26.44 × 38 = $1,004.90
- Fortnightly: $1,004.90 × 2 = $2,009.80
- Annual: $26.44 × 38 × 52 = $52,269.44
These figures come from the Fair Work Commission’s National Minimum Wage Order 2026. The same calculation works for any hourly rate, but remember it assumes you work the same hours every week with no unpaid overtime, penalty rates, or allowances.
The National Minimum Wage vs Award Rates
The national minimum wage is the legal floor for award/agreement-free employees. Many workers are covered by an award that sets higher minimum rates for their industry or role. You can find the correct rate for your job using our pay guides or the Fair Work Ombudsman’s Pay and Conditions Tool.
Casual Loading
Casual employees receive a 25% loading on top of the base rate to compensate for not getting paid leave. For the national minimum wage, the casual rate is $26.44 × 1.25 = $33.05 per hour. If you are casual, use our casual loading page to see how it affects your pay. Never enter a rate that already includes casual loading – the checkbox on the timesheet adds it for you.
Superannuation Is Paid on Top
Employers must pay superannuation guarantee contributions of 12% (from 2026–27) on your ordinary earnings, up to a maximum contribution base of $270,830 per year. Super is paid on top of your gross pay, not deducted from it. So your total employment cost is your gross pay plus 12% super. For more details, see super and packaging.
Tax and Take-Home Pay
Your annual gross pay is not what you take home. The Australian Taxation Office applies marginal tax rates for 2026–27:
- Nil on the first $18,200
- 15% on income from $18,201 to $45,000
- 30% on income from $45,001 to $135,000
- 37% on income from $135,001 to $190,000
- 45% on income above $190,000
Plus a Medicare levy of 2% (using the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds). Use our take-home pay tool to estimate what you keep after tax and Medicare.
Average Earnings in Australia
The Australian Bureau of Statistics’ Average Weekly Earnings for May 2026 show:
- Full-time adult ordinary time: $2,083.70 per week ($108,352.40 annual)
- All employees total earnings (including part-time): $1,579.20 per week ($82,118.40 annual)
These averages help you see where your hourly rate sits compared to the broader workforce. Our average pay page has more comparisons.
What Is the NRL Salary Cap?
For a very different perspective on annual pay, consider professional rugby league. What is the NRL salary cap? It is the total amount each NRL club can spend on its top 30 players in a season. For 2026, the base cap is $11.55 million, plus a $100,000 motor vehicle allowance and a $300,000 veteran and developed player allowance, making a total of $11.95 million per club. This is a team cap, not an individual limit. Individual players can earn additional income from non-club sponsors, representative payments, and certain benefits outside the cap. While NRL players are not paid by the hour, their annual contracts can be converted to an equivalent hourly rate for comparison – but the cap shows how high-end sports salaries are structured very differently from award wages. For more on how job pay varies across industries, see job pay.
Important Notes on Our Calculations
All annual figures on this site are estimates based on the formula hourly rate × hours per week × 52. They assume:
- The same rate every week
- No unpaid overtime
- No penalty rates or allowances
- No salary sacrifice
Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax uses the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 thresholds were not confirmed at the time of this reference. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax. For precise rates, always check the Fair Work Ombudsman, Fair Work Commission, and the Australian Taxation Office.
